Within the early scene in the spaceport, announcements are made for "Adam Strange" and arrivals from "Thanagar." In DC Comics, Adam Strange is a sci-fi hero, similar to Buck Rogers. And Thanagar is the planet from which the superhero Hawkman originates, and many Hawkman adventures take place in space and have a similar Buck Rogers/Adam Strange quality.
When he's playing golf in his apartment, Buck tells Wilma it was a great tradition for astronauts from his day to carry a golf club with them. In 1971, Alan Shepard smuggled two golf balls and the modified head of a golf club onto the Apollo 14 moon mission. Using a long soil sampling tool for the club's shank he shot off both balls. Because the space suit severely limited his swing he only got a 200 yard drive.
When the series started, it was not a certainty that Erin Gray would sign on to reprise her movie role of Wilma Deering. As a result, Buck has a few different female sidekicks in early episodes, notably Juanin Clay as Major Marla Landers in "Vegas In Space". Clay was intended as a possible replacement for Gray, until it was decided she would continue in the series.
Cesar Romero is the second prominent Batman (1966) villain actor to appear on the show. He played The Joker in the 1960s TV series. The first was Roddy McDowall (who played The Bookworm), and the other two were Frank Gorshin (The Riddler) and Julie Newmar (Catwoman).
