$100 for a 1956 Chevy convertible?
jazzfi14 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
One of my favorite BB episodes, great family fun... Greg gets his drivers license and is naturally eager to get his first car to go along with it.. He tells his dad that he's managed to save $100 and dad is proud, but Dad also insists that Greg promise to let him take a look at any car he may be considering, and reassures Greg's mom not to worry, as he cannot possibly find a decent car for $100... Wrong! Greg's buddy Eddie, played by BB veteran Chris Beaumont, who sometimes plays Greg's friend (see episode "A Room At The Top") but more often his nemesis (see episodes "Our Son, The Man" and "Quarterback Sneak"), ever so smoothly bamboozles Greg into buying his 1956 Chevy Bel-Air convertible which provides plenty of comedy as Greg limps it onto their driveway, smoking, hissing, and moaning... Greg attempts to spruce it up with his siblings' help but without real success, and then we get that nice fatherly lecture from Mike about the buyer needing to be aware. But then Greg figures he'll pull the same stunt on one of his sweet natured and trusting friends (played by a pre-American Graffiti Charlie Martin Smith) but he ultimately cannot go through with it because of his own honest nature. Great episode with a lesson for us all, and a heartbreak to classic car lovers who know that a '56 Belair convertible in that shape today brings in offers of about $10,000....

HAVE I GOT JUST THE CAR FOR YOU!

MUST SEE. Bill Freedman and Ben Gershman wrote this classic episode (for all of us old car lovers), both popular writers on tv for years.

The story may have been inspired by LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, about 9 years earlier, all about Wally's first car, which was a 53 Chevy.

Greg is the man behind the wheel here, who has just gotten his license and is looking for a sporty ride! He doesn't have to look too far as crafty bud Eddie (played by Chris Beaumont), wins him over with lots of sizzle --and a broken down 56 Chevy?

The car is a wreck, but Greg's in love, and at the bargain basement price of $100! In today's market, that would equal about $760 bucks.

There's a lesson to be learned... especially when Greg thinks about selling the car to someone else. One thing to note is the Chevy looks pretty darn good after its all fixed up. But what was the COST? Hmmm?

Well directed by Jack Arnold, and with some good one liners. Chris Beaumont appeared four times on the series, later to become a story consultant for FAME in the 80s.

Interestingly, a few years later, Greg's car was blown up on an episode of MANNIX. Great, great trivia question. It's a wonder Paramount still had the car.

Recommended for all the memories and car repair bills. SEASON 3 EPISODE 4 remastered color Paramount/ABC dvd box set.
