Stupid But Funny
slightlymad2215 January 2015
Plot In A Paragraph: for a prank Eddie steals a car belonging to soon to be married rugby captain 'Cannonball' Taffy O'Jones and in it are the hotel tickets for Cannonball and his new bride. The chance of having a free holiday and a bit of retribution is too much for Richie and Eddie, who turn up at the honeymoon hotel with Eddie in drag. They are upset to learn they will have to share a bed, but decide to try and power through the weekend.

Rick Myall and Ade Edmondson have always had the ability to make me laugh, nothing has changed here and it's a lot of fun to rewatch these episodes years later with my youngest son and see him laugh hysterically at the things that made me laugh when I was the same age.

Once again the trend of the season taking each episode out of reality continues with things getting more and more ridiculous and outlandish.

Some inspired moments but others felt a bit forced

Warning: Spoilers
Richie and Eddie steal a car and honeymoon tickets and check into a hotel posing as newlyweds.

I found the quality of this episode a bit of a mixed bag, but I appreciate that humour is one of the most subjective things in the world and it may appeal more to others. Some parts I found extremely funny but there were also some scenes I did struggle with.

I love the first act where Richie and Eddie return from playing cricket looking ridiculous and then describe what happened at the match. Also I found the scene where they drive to the hotel very funny. It's when we arrive at the hotel that it becomes hit and miss for me.

Richie is on fine form with some tremendous banter with the supporting characters and one part he was hilarious just talking to himself. Rik Mayall again shows his brilliance as a performer and how consistently funny he is playing Richard Richard.

The gag with Eddie in drag pretending to be Richie's wife is the part that didn't work for me and it goes on for too long. There's nothing wrong with Adrian Edmondson's performance, he is great as always. I don't think it works as a concept, because he is such a mad character to begin with that dressing him up in female attire have him act as mad as always makes no difference. Visually I found him annoying to look at and him pretending to be a women whilst letching an actual women in a lesbian pretence is only mildly funny in the first instance, but when it gets repeated it feels like the joke is being forced. By the time he starts flirting with the French barman and Richie take umbrage I had almost lost the will to watch any more.

All the above probably sounds harsh, but I'm just being honest about my reaction to the humour. I'm a fan of the series and wish I liked this sequence more but unfortunately for me it isn't up to the standard of some of their other classic moments.
