After Ken has been shot and is recovering in hospital, Alex visits him late at night and reads him the following poem: "If pain and hurt and ache I crave / Or a fire to burn my soul / If tears I choose to cleanse mine eyes / Then to you would I give my all. // If lips must be bitten but never kissed / And ne'er to mention your name / Then nought is left except to die / As a moth unto the flame."
This is almost certainly intended to be the final episode of Series 7 (and of Boon), even though Thieves Like Us (1995) was broadcast three years later. Evidence for this supposition is the two cliffhangers: the (presumed) engagement of Harry and Mary O'Haren, and the growing romance between Ken and Alex. It is left to the viewer's imagination to picture Ken and Alex as they might be now, with children who have long blonde hair, craggy faces, and croaky but very posh voices.
This episode, although succeeded by "Thieves Like Us" in syndication, is technically the one that should be labeled as the "last". This can be noted in the aforementioned title as there is no mention of any of the events that took place in this one.
"Thieves Like Us" was quite clearly meant to have taken place prior to the events in "Shot in the Dark". The reasons for the delayed airing of "Thieves Like Us" have never been addressed.
