Nick's rumor turns a shy dress-maker into a bandit
kfo949426 November 2012
One morning at the breakfast table Nick tells the rest of the family about his dime novel that he been reading concerning the Devlin Gang. All the members had been arrested except for one female member that is living somewhere in California and knows the whereabouts of all the money stolen.

Nick, as a joke, tells one of his light-headed cowhands that the shy dress maker, Jennie Hall, is the woman of the Devlin Gang. He is so half-wit that he believes the story and starts telling people that the story is true. So now the entire town, law-enforcement and even other bandits are making their way to Stockton to talk with the last member of the gang. Even a journalist is caught up in the action as he writes state-wide newspaper articles concerning Jennie Hall as the female bandit.

Nick apologizes for starting the rumor but it seems that Jennie is liking the attention she is receiving from others. She even plays into people's hands as they ask question about her background. That is until someone ransacks her home and kills a deputy sheriff. Later we find out that Jennie does have a secret and Nick will be surprised with the results.

In this episode Peter Breck gets to be and do everything Nick is famous for doing. A fist-fight, a witch-slap and even a gunshot precisely to someone's ear- Nick is just being Nick in this episode. Even the guest actress Julie Harris is great as Jennie Hall. I have always liked her acting and she did not let anyone down in this performance. Good Watch

The GREAT Julie Harris
starmmjaid18 January 2020
Julie Harris makes anything she's in well worth watching, and her charm and power as a truly great actress make even ordinary episodes of any series rise to the level of memorable. This episode is no exception. You can read the plot in other reviews. Just concentrate on what Harris does for not only this script, but for the other actors (possible exception, Stanwyck, though she's only in a couple of scenes with Harris).

Girl has skills
bkoganbing21 November 2015
Dennis Patrick as a Ned Buntline type writer of penny dreadful novels of the old west and Julie Harris as a shy dressmaker whom he spread the reputation highlight this Big Valley story.

Truth be told it was Peter Breck who got a rumor started about Harris who came to Stockton a couple of years back, lives quietly as a dressmaker and is very shy. He tells one of the gullible Barkley hands Timothy Scott that Harris is a notorious outlaw woman from Kansas who knows where there's considerable loot stashed from a gang she used to run with.

Truth also be told Harris rides like one of the Barkley cowhands and is a dead shot with a rifle. That raises questions but it sure comes in handy when some other outlaw types buy into that rumor.

Harris as always is good, I've never seen her bad in anything. She'd be handy to have around in a fight, she has skills.

Julie Harris - that's all you have to say
mlbroberts13 June 2021
She was always wonderful in everything she did, and she was the perfect woman to teach Nick some important lessons - beauty is not just skin deep, don't pull practical jokes on real people, and leave your heart open to all kinds of love. Sometimes it seemed like Nick still had a lot of growing up to do. Jennie Hall was the woman to help him do it.
