A reporter visits Galactica
Tweekums25 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is different from most other episodes as it follows a character we haven't seen before; D'Anna Biers is a reporter who after broadcasting a piece about the 'Gideon Massacre' is invited to produce a piece about life on Galactica, to show the fleet the human side of the military. At first it looks as if this was a big mistake; while investigating her story she learns of death threats against Col. Tigh, witnesses officers almost coming to blows, sees a pilot break down because she has been taking far to many stimulants and possibly the worst of all she sees Sharon Valarii and learns of her pregnancy. Although she had been promised full access she agrees to Adama's demand that Sharon must be kept a secret.

This episode could have been overly cliché, in fact when we saw the final broadcast of her story I thought it was… until the twist in the final scene that I won't spoil here. Lucy Lawless, best known for playing Xena: Warrior Princess, did a good job as D'Anna; I'm sure we haven't seen the last of her character. Even though there was some action this was a purely character driven episode, so much so that when the fleet was attacked by a pair of Cylon raiders we stayed and watched the reactions of the bridge crew rather than seeing the action. The only real weakness was the subplot involving Col. Tigh and his death threats; it was wrapped up far to easily although the scene where his potential killer confronted him was good; Michael Hogan is great in the role.

Possibly the best of the first 21 episodes - and not a Cylon raider in sight

But a couple in sound. A balanced examination of the ethics of journalism (the value of truth vs. the value of security, subjectivity vs. objectivity, etc.), with a final twist that may give you goosebumps. And my Gods is Lucy Lawless beautiful! Even more so than in her "Xena" years. She could have been a supermodel, but we were lucky enough that she chose acting instead. ***1/2 out of 4.

Great use of the original theme song
indibbidibble23 December 2021
One of the not to often times you hear a version of the original 1970s era theme song. Played during the video montage of crew life produce by the production crew of Lawless' news character. It captures a realistic display of day to day life of the crew from the top brass to the lower enlisted.

Finally. I understand why BSG is revered!

Warning: Spoilers
For the first time in 21 episodes (which excludes the two 90 minute introductions), I can say this is the one where I finally accepted Battlestar Galactica as worthy sci-fi.

Until now, I've been wincing at the intermittent terrible dialogue, poor camera work, frustrating sound jungles, childish direction, annoying character decisions, questionable acting, etc.

In this episode however, we're treated to a unique framing device. We're forced to see all of the Galactica characters from a new perspective. The episodes sells the idea I believe the show writers has been aiming for all along - the human condition, in survival mode, in space. It's exactly how I imagine humans would react in a fleet of less than 50k people under constant threat. We soldier on, faults and all.

Moreover, the overarching story line is seamlessly progressed (finally), without any gods arrow shenanigans.

The Clyon threat is real.

The fleet is in jeopardy, always The humans are fallible.

I felt joy in the final dialogue of the reporters camera piece. Gratification for Adama. But no. A worthy twist. The enemy truly beckons....

Okay, but a bit disappointing after the previous episode

Commander Adama and President Roslin allow a journalist, D'Anna Biers, access to the Galactica. She has been savaging criticizing the military after the Gideon incident where civilians were killed by Galactica's Marines. Maybe if she sees what Galactica's personnel have to go through on a daily basis she'll have a different perspective.

The previous episode of Battlestar Galactica was fantastic, giving the fleet a purpose and the series a centre. I was expecting this episode to build on that but instead we have another episode-long sub-plot that doesn't really add anything to the greater arc of the show.

It also didn't help that the focus in this episode was on my least favourite industry, the media. Lucy Lawless' (as D'Anna Biers) accent is also quite grating, seeming out of place in the show.

Overall, it's still interesting and entertaining enough but it does give up some of the ground gained in the previous episode.

Final Cut

Warning: Spoilers
Lucy Lawless appears as D'Anna Biers. A journalist planning an expose on the Gideon incident.

Adama is perplexed how she got the footage. He and President Roslin decide to assuage her by giving her access to all areas in Galactica.

It will be a warts and all documentary. A big risk as some of the crew are being disruptive and bad tempered. Meanwhile Tigh and his wife are being threatened.

The fly on the wall format is not new. It really did not work for me as I did not buy for a second that a commander would seriously allow this. Especially as a pregnant cylon is on the ship.

It does improve as it goes on. Biers salutes the heroic people that serve the fleet each and every day. There is also a twist at the end. It reminds me. Are they not using Baltar's contraption now.
