Guest performers and an engaging story really make this one shine!
garrard9 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
"Judgment Day" is one of the best of the later episodes of "The New Batman Adventures," formerly known as "Batman: The Animated Series." In this installment, character actor Malachi Throne voices "The Judge," a vigilante out to deal "the strong arm of the law" on criminals that have repeatedly abused the system, managing to play "revolving doors" with the courts. He almost fatally disposes of Two-Face, The Riddler, and The Penguin, each saved by the intervention of Batman.

Throne is superb, with his distinctive bass, as are frequent Bat-actors Richard Moll, John Glover, and Paul Williams as the aforementioned villains. Of course, Kevin Conroy provides his stellar work as Batman.

The episode has a very satisfying and quite surprising end, elevating it a 9-star rating.

Should Had Summer, Stronger Reason for Judge
osbornj-0021321 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
One of the ONLY two episodes of this feeble follow-up to THE clsssic Batman series that belonged IN it (other Mad Love)--but could have BEEN BETTER. Two-Face needed a STRONGER reason to be The Judge, the two bit corrupt councilman was TOO small for such a BIG role, and the "Anchorwwoman" was such SAD reminder how Summer Gleeson was unfair, unjust, DUMPED cynically so that JERK Ryder could become the Creeper to help DC TRY to sell comics comeback of its 1960's comics CATASTROPHE The Creeper--but DIDN'T, it failed. According to show's website, though never shown, Summer supposedly CO-HOSTED with JERK, so have her back just ONCE, give Judge REAL twist target:

Summer KIDNAPPED BY PENGUIN, tied to chair, gagged, he leering, rubbing flippers, "Ah, my be-u-ti-full FLA - MING - O!" Judge appears, saves Summer, she champions him as TV as new crusading hero,, ignores Batman's warnings.

Mayor HamiiDULL (as in D -U-L-L) Hill laughing decides to use Judge to move up the political ladder. He and Summer KIDNAPPED (double RED-header for her) tied up, she, "Someone help US!", Hill "Save ME!" Judge appears reveals Hill appallingly all time HamilDECEIT, concealed corruption, been robbing Gotham blind WHOLE time, "While Batman fought the enemies without, YOU have have been THE ENEMY WITHIN."

Judge dumps at Hill's feet, Summer SHOCKED, cooked City books, City cash crammed foreign bank accounts, City contracts cornered by front companies like H. Ill Construction rat ridden housing horrors, H.A. Milton Milk Company selling sour milk to schoolchildren, bribes, kickbacks, rigged elections, cemetery and City payroll lists MATCHING, stealing salaries. "ALL this time everyone thought you were just some beyond belief BORE," Summer cries, "you--TRICKED us!"

"You're the LOWEST filth of all Hill, ," Judge says. "Riddler, Joker, Penguin, the rest, NEVER hid what they were, but yours is the WORST crime of all--BETRAYAL!" Hill offers Judge half of Gotham to rid rid of evidence, SUMMER, horrified, Judge in rage about to kill him when Batman appears, overpowers, reveals Judge as Two-Face. Next day Bruce, Alfred, watch on-air apology, media mea culpa to Batman by Summer, "I should have listened to you but I did NOT, ignored good judgement for story, MISTAKE I promise to you, and viewer, I will NOT repeat," then reporting, "Today, FORMER Mayor..." led off in handcuffs by Gordon and Bullock. "Amazing, sir, TWO Two-Faces," says Alfred. Bruce explains,, "Before poor Harvey became Two-Face Hill was his mentor, a father-figure to him. He WORSHIPED Hill. It was recently discovering THE TRUTH that turned him into The Judge without realizing it."
