Warning: Spoilers
This is Gunn's first episode. He'll be a pretty big part of the show in the seasons to come and it's cool to see him introduced here. "War Zone" isn't that great an episode in and of itself, but if you're watching the show on DVD, you really need to see it. It explains Gunn's back story and sets up his character for more interesting adventures later on.

Basically, "War Zone" revolves around Angel stumbling across a young band of vampire hunters. He's on a job, trying to get some photos back for a client named David. (David's being blackmailed with some embarrassing shots of himself in a demon brothel.) Anyway, Angel's attacked by the kids, who don't realize that he's a good vampire. Angel tries to explain things to the groups leader, Charles Gunn. Angel doesn't think that the kids should be fighting vampires. He says that they're in over their heads. Gunn won't listen. When Gunn's sister, Alanna, is kidnapped by a band of vampires, he goes after her. But, it's too late. Alanna has been turned into a vampire and Gunn has to stake her. He's is heartbroken. The other vampires attack and Angel steps in to protect the kids. He and Gunn forge an alliance.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like Gunn (especailly in season five, where his character really comes into his own) so it's cool to see him introduced. The scene where Gunn has to stake his sister is heartbreaking. Poor Gunn. He loved and cared for Alanna all his life and now he has to be the one to "kill" her. It's a shame that he and Spike never got to discuss that in season five, since they sort of have that in common. Gunn staked his sister. Spike staked his mom. They could have had a really interesting conversation. Oh well... Also, the scene with Wes and Cordy in the car is pretty funny. She's trying to pretend that she's on a beach somewhere and not stuck in some icky alley way. So, she's got the whole big sunglasses and scarf over her hair, 1950s Hollywood look going. Wes is sort of amused by her theatrics. It's sweet. And I like David a lot. He's a really interesting character. The Angel Inc. gang should have let him join the team. In my book, you can never have too many billionaires wanting to befriend you.

On the down side, I wish that Alanna had been mentioned more in later episodes. Her death is a huge turning point for Gunn's character and she should have been brought up more often. Also, like I said, I adore David and I wish he'd been in more episodes. Neither of those things are technically "War Zones" fault, I guess, but still...

My favorite part of the episode: Angel having to punch his way out of the meat locker, because he forgot that he had a cell phone.

Cordelia: What? No, money. I like to smell a little money once in a while. Angel: She's not just saying that. Hide some in the office sometime and watch her. It's uncanny.

Warning: Spoilers
War Zone is about Angel stumbling upon a group of street kids in need of help, while helping a nerdy billionaire retrieve some compromising photos.

One of the weaker episodes. I just don't see vampires concocting a plan to take the girl (referred to as the heart), in order to lure some street kids. That requires a whole lot of respect that vampires don't garner and especially not for some human kids. Also, screen time's taken away from our beloved characters, in order to get the perspective and backstory of Gunn.

Angel: Look, I'm the boss here. I say when we use the cell phones... and people are gonna die and I have to go.

sure, the season finale was last week, but...

Warning: Spoilers
Please note I write this as someone who is watching Angel for the first time and I haven't watched any eps after this and I'm writing as a response to the 6/10 reviews.

Sure, the season finale basically ended last episode, but the next season needs some framework and all I can say is if these guys are going to be there next season, they're a HELL of a lot better than the crappy, insipid, beaten-to-death-horse of an Institute in Buffy.. That was just painful. And Adam and... holy sticks, lames Riley....

Aaaanyway, rant aside. I feel this show is really trying to reach back to its roots to show the underbelly of the struggling masses being prayed upon while the upper layer of LA is only concerned about "inconveniences."

This show manages to tug at the heartstrings. And while, yes, there were stereotypes... "we don't need no white dude" white men can't jump style 1990s japes, we need to look back and realise this was actually written last century and just move on with our more refined morality and expectations.

The storyline was solid and the acting was fine, especially the sister who was just awesome from start to finish.

The brother/sister storyline was touching... I had been given the impression that vamps lost the nuance of their lives upon tuning, but that damned sister nearly played him like a harp.

Nice setup for next season.

I don't need advice from no middle-cla-ss white dude that's dead!

Warning: Spoilers
I think that the only problem with it is that the writers introduce some new characters and try to make the audience have sympathy for them after only 40-ish minutes, it doesn't work that way. But I still like the episode, the 'gang' story lines work just fine and I do feel a connection between 'Alonna' and 'Gunn', my favorite scene is when he stakes her after being turned into a vampire, it's a very nice scene - Say goodbye to everything you ever knew. I also like the fight scenes, those are always fun and the B-storyline also works as 'Angel' is hired to protect some rich geek's reputation (I wonder if the writers intended on giving 'David Nabbit' a bigger role?). The script was fine, there were some chuckle moments (Like when 'Cordy' thinks about prostituting herself) and the ending was also nice. Still, I can't help but to be left wanting for more. ALONNA: Remember when we were kids in that shelter on Plummer Street, hmm? Second floor was all rotted out. You used to dare kids to cross, and of course you were the best at it, because you were the, you were the bravest. I wanted to be like you so bad, so I went up, and the floor gave out. I would have broken my neck, but you'd been watching me the whole time. You were standing right below and you caught me. Ever since I can remember you've been looking out for me. But you don't have to any more, because I'm good, and it's my turn to look out for you now. GUNN: How?. ALONNA: Look at you. You're running and hiding, cold and hungry. You call that living? You're the one that's falling now. Let me catch you. Don't you want to stop falling? I'm gonna fix it. Oh, say goodbye to everything you ever knew. GUNN: Goodbye. (8.5 out of 10)

OK but a comedown after last week

Warning: Spoilers
WAR ZONE

The Good;

Charlie Gunn, yay! David Nabbit too and some nice humour at the brothel (love the characterisation of the Madam, hard as nails but extremely streetwise as to the sensitive realities of her business)

The Bad;

Not much, good story although the slum allegory is laid on a bit thick.

Best line:

Gunn; "I don't need advice from some middle class white dude who's dead"

Jeez, how did they get away with that?

A nasty incestuous vibe between Gunn and his vamped-sister.

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés

Damsel in distress; 15, in this case it's the male characters who need help

Inverting the Hollywood cliché; We expect a patrician speech from Angel to Gunn at the end. Instead Angel actually asks Gunn for his help in future, again recognising talent when he sees it. CC and Wes rescue Angel who forgets to use his mobile phone to get himself out of the meatlocker.

In disguise; 4

DB get's his shirt off; yep, Angel getting patched up so 7

Cordy's tattoo;3

Cheap Angel; A paying client for AI, Cordy must be so happy. Angel also wants to 'see the cheque'

4

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 8 Wes: 2

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 9 Angel: 10 Wes: 4 Doyle; 1

Kills: Cordy: 3 vamps, 1½ demons Angel: 3 vamps and 1 demon for Angel so 4 demons so 14 vamps, 10 and 1/2 demons, 2 humans. Doyle; 1 vamp

Wes; 1/2 a demon

Kate; 3 vamps

Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans.

Gunn;

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2

Alternate Fang Gang: no but Angel refers to himself as Angelus to intimidate the other vamps Cordy: 2 Angel: 6

Characters killed: 2 of Gunn's people killed.

27

Recurring characters killed;

2;

Total number of Angel Investigations: Gunn a long way from joining yet 3, Angel and Cordy and Wes

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 8,

Packing heat; no but one of Gunn's guys uses a flamethrowers which Wes will employ later to good effect.

Wes; 2

Doyle; 1

Angel; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky:

Angel's entire visit to Madame Dorians and the David Mabbet stuff is just SOOO out there, especially the tail gag (this was the era of Madame Alex/Hedi Fleiss etc). That said of all the demon girls am I the only one to find Lina the only attractive one? One of the demons appears to be one of the girls from She, her Ko well and truly intact (hope she's still not burning people)Cordelia is once again tempted to prostitute herself to a wealthy man as she was in the pilot. Cordy says that David's name feels 'Good in her mouth'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I don't think even Faith would say that?)

Captain Subtext;

Not so subtle racial and social hints, even the vamps bemoan the sort of people they now have to feed on.

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages;

4,

Guantanamo Bay;

Angel once again tortures a vamp

Buffy characters on Angel; 11

Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla

Questions and observations;

Gunn's strategy seems OK to me, taking the fight to the enemy rather than waiting until they come to you. By contrast Angel lets the vamps go at the end, to kill others? The vamps attacking Gunn's headquarters resemble the aliens in the War of the Worlds series. Both Angel and Gunn have killed their sisters as Wes will one day kill his 'father' and Spike his mother.

Marks out of 10; 6/10, an OK ep but one that's hard to watch at times, largely significant for the introduction of Gunn (and his truck) and his motivations.
