An average monster of the week

Warning: Spoilers
Into next season, Gunn will be torn between his former life and his new job at Angel Inc. While he still feels an attachment to his old neighborhood and friends, he no longer fits in with them. He belongs with Angel, Cordy and Gunn now and he's seen too much to just go back to his old way of life. Gunn's divide loyalties cause him a lot of trouble and this is an important episode to understand his conflicted feelings. Also, "The Thin Dead Line" is where Wes gets shot. His injury will play into a lot of episodes this season and will help to make him a tougher guy in the end. So, if you're watching the season on DVD, you should see the "Thin Dead Line."

"The Thin Dead Line" revolves around a group of zombie cops cracking down in LA. They're fighting crime with a brutal disregard for the rights of citizens, beating people and scaring everyone. When Anne, the woman who runs the local teen shelter, learns that her kids are being terrorized by overzealous police officers, she goes to Gunn for help. Anne and Gunn are old friends and Gunn agrees to look into the situation. At the same time, a woman comes to the new Angel Inc. offices because he daughter's been infected by a demon. The little girl has a third eye growing in the back of her head. Wes and Cordy work on curing the kid. But, when they learn that Gunn is planning to go out and try to video tape the police attacking him, they decide to put the third eye investigation on hold. Cordy goes to the shelter to help Anne, while Gunn goes out to find Gunn and stop him form getting hurt. Unfortunately, he stumbles across a zombie cop trying to arrest Gunn and his friends. The police officer shoots Wes. Gunn, Wes and the other escape back to the shelter, while the zombie chases them and calls for reinforcements.

Meanwhile, Angel has been spying on his friends, keeping an eye on them from a distance. When a cop tries to arrest him, Angel and the officer get into a fight. Angel kills the zombie and then heads off to see Kate. He says that something supernatural is going on and, after some investigating, he and Kate discover that a police captain is making an army of zombie cops. The captain is reanimating officers who dies in the line of duty and putting them back out on the streets. As the zombie army attacks the teen shelter, Gunn, Cordy and Anne try to fight them off. The kids at the shelter fight, too. Wes is in bad shape and needs a doctor. Back at the police station, Angel breaks the magic statue controlling the zombies and the spell is broken. All the dead cops go back to being dead. Wes is rushed to the hospital and finally gets help.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like Wes and Cordy's annoyance over Gunn's plan to video tape police brutality. "That's a really dumb plan." Wes mutters. Cordy arches a brow, "Ah, but you forget that Gunn graduated with a degree in dumb planning from Angel University." They finally decide to go and save Gunn form himself, which is pretty ironic since Wes is the one who winds up in trouble. Also, I like Cordy spotting one of the homeless teens wearing her clothes. "The lady at the store said that blouse was one of a kind." Angel donated some of Cordy's stuff to the shelter back in "Blood Money" and it's fun to see it play out over several episodes. And I like Angel fighting that zombie cop. He kicks the guy's head right off which, even for Angel, is just unexpected... Especially, when the decapitated police officer keeps talking.

On the down side, this just isn't the best episode. The teenagers are kind of annoying most of the time and the story doesn't really contribute a lot to the larger story line. Also, it seems kind of ridiculous to take Wes to the shelter and not to the hospital after he's wounded. Poor Wesley could have bled to death, for crying out loud.

My favorite part of the episode: Angel trying to work up the courage to go into Wes's hospital room and see him. Angel quickly gives up on the idea of letting Wes know that he's there, but Cordy finds him and really lets him have it. I feel bad for poor Angel, but I'm happy that he's finally starting to seek out his friends again.

Angel does Maniac Cop

Warning: Spoilers
The THIN DEAD LINE

The Good; Excellent ep, lovely to see Anne again, good story, especially like the Jackson/Gunn confrontation. Also a nice little role for the desk sergeant.

The Bad; Could this really all happen without anyone knowing about it? Or should I ask without anyone caring? Doesn't anyone hear the gunshots in the police station?

Best line: Angel; "I just killed a cop" Kate; (looking around the police station) "I wouldn't say that in here no matter how immortal you think you are"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Once again man's (or should that be zombie's?) inhumanity to man always more disturbing than the supernatural.

Apocalypses: 5

Kinky dinky: No time for that

Captain Subtext; Or that!

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 5,

Guantanamo Bay; Merle moves and I don't blame him. The whole thing is one big discussion of The End Justifies the Means, the police Captain uses vigilante methods to eradicate the crime in his area but at what cost? Angel is happy to give the area back to the Jackson's of the world because that's human trouble rather than supernatural. Are the Captain's actions a reflection of Angel's own?

Buffy characters on Angel; 14 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, Master, Anne

Questions and observations; Nice mislead, you think Anne is going to Angel but instead she goes to Gunn. Gunn himself starts to feel removed from his old gang. Angel and Kate seem to have restored their working relationship after the Shroud of Rashamon. Love the Cordy's clothes gag. The whole ep is reminiscent of the old Maniac Cop horror film series (which also featured a vigilante zombie cop resurrected through voodoo) with hints of Night of the Living Dead, Magnum Force and Assault on Precinct 13 (the original, forget the remake even if it has Gay Byrne)

Marks out of 10; 7/10, enjoyable but a step outside the arc.

Cordelia: Maybe we can buy one of those star maps, find out where Steven Seagal lives. You telling me he got to be a movie star without a little demonic assistance?

Warning: Spoilers
The Thin Dead Line is about zombie cops, cracking down on the crime in the area.

While the premise of zombie cops is something everyone can be onboard with, the teenagers can be annoying and some of the dialogue overly preachy. When Anne's talking to Wes, Cordy and Gunn about Angel, she happens to leave out that he left her two million dollars for the shelter... The plot allows Angel and Kate the opportunity to open up a line of communication again. When Angel's looking in on Wesley in hospital and contemplating entering, Cordy catches him and chews him out. You know Angel's thinking "god I love this about her."

Wesley: That can't be his plan, can it? I mean, it's really a dumb plan. Cordelia: Hey, Gunn graduated with a major in dumb planning from Angel University. He sat at the feet of the master and learned well how to plan dumbly.

We don't need you. You walked away, do us a favor and just stay away
SleepTight66626 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
We don't need you. You walked away, do us a favor and just stay away - Better than the previous two episodes, but I still miss 'Darla' too much, her episodes were so much stronger. But this episode has zombie cops, zombies are always fun, especially when they get to hurt the main cast. One of the zombies shot 'Wesley' which was great fun. I also loved the scene where the zombies try to get into 'Anne's shelter and kill everyone, intense! Only thing that drags this episode a bit down was some poor acting of the guest stars and the special effects could also have gotten some more work. But nevertheless, it was a great horror episode that also developed 'Angel's character a bit as he is starting to feel bad for fiering his crew, I loved the scene where 'Cordy' told him to say away, she had all the right. It was also good to see 'Kate' back, I feel sorry for her character, especially in the next two episodes. KATE: I guess you never caught up with your vampire friends in time. ANGEL: I did track them down later and set them on fire. KATE: Sounds like you enjoyed it. But then again, the whole murder and mayhem thing's always been right up your alley. ANGEL: If that's how you feel, I guess this isn't the best time to tell you, I just killed a cop. KATE: I wouldn't make a joke about that in this building, no matter how immortal you think you are. ANGEL: Of course, this is the kind of cop that keeps talking even after he's been decapitated. Bet they don't teach you that at the academy. (9.0 out of 10)

They're Coming to Get You Cordelia
Samuel-Shovel11 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Angel and the old gang's paths cross when both encounter zombie policemen "cleaning up the streets" in the bad parts of LA. While Gunn and company attempt to help the shelter and Anne combat these undead officers, Angel and Detective Lockley try to unearth whose behind it all. Things get complicated when Wesley takes some lead to the gut.

I think the concept of zombie cops is pretty cool. This episode really didn't impress too much though with its execution. I liked the plot thread of Gunn "abandoning" his roots and I have a feeling that's not the end of that story. And while Wesley's near death experience was exciting, it was pretty clear that he was never in any danger of being killed off the show. Also, Angel's battle with the police chief was rather lame.

Angel seems to feel at least some remorse for how he cast aside all his friends. Their reunion is inevitable but who knows how long they will stay apart, doing their own thing.

Conclusion: A fairly humdrum episode that doesn't do much to develop the story arc, unless you count Cordelia scolding Angel and telling him to get lost.
