Angelus is back! Woo-Hoo!
katierose2955 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Angelus being on screen again just completely makes season four for me. He's so lovably evil and horribly clever that every episode that he's in is a winner. Angelus is so very, VERY different than Angel that I don't even see them as the same person. I think that this episode really explains the Angelus/Angel dichotomy well. It's like Angelus is Angel's alternate personality or evil twin. They're really two totally different "people," who happen to share a body. Seeing someone who looks like Angel being so incredibly cruel is just an amazing change of pace. Anyway, this is a great episode and I highly recommend it.

This episode revolves around Angelus' return. He's locked in the Hyperion basement, but he's still taking control of everyone at the hotel. Angelus is smart. He's willing to take all the knowledge Angel has on his friends and use it against them. Pretty soon he has Wes and Gunn arguing over Fred. When Wes kisses her, the two men start fighting, much to Angelus's delight. He's telling everyone that Conner slept with Cordy. He's attacking Fred and basically just being an evil jerk. He also refuses to tell them about the Beast, until Cordy approaches him with a deal. If he'll help them, she'll sleep with him. Angelus agrees. It turns out that there is a mystical sect of witches who can banish the Beast. When Wes, Conner and Cordy track them down, though, that finds the entire sect dead. Discouraged they head back to the hotel. Cordy says that her deal with Angelus is off since they still haven't gotten any closer to killing the Beast and Team Angel prepares to re-ensoul Angel. Unfortunately, when they open the safe to retrieve his soul, they find that it's been stolen.

There are some great parts to this episode and most of them have to do with Angelus. He's just so cool and sinister and funny. I love his scenes with Wes. He's annoyed by Angel's "Indiana Jones" fantasy and feeling his way through the conversation, waiting for an opportunity to strike. Wes and Angelus are fencing back and forth with words, but Angelus is clearly in control. He hits all of Wes's sore spots: His love for Fred, his kidnapping of Conner, his failure with Faith... But, then when Angelus grabs Fred through the bars of his cage, Wes calmly shoots him with a trank gun. Angelus stares at him with a look of pure frustrated hatred that's just chilling. He can't believe that Wesley has the power to stop him. And Angelus mocking Cordy is also pretty fun. He's utterly contemptuous that she broke up with Angel because of his past. He does this higher pitched "Cordy" voice as he reenacts the scene from "Appocolypse Nowish." "You ate babies." He's even got the hand gesture down. It's hilarious. Also, I like Fred's reaction to learning that Conner and Cordy slept together. She creeped out and I know just how she feels. Finally, I think its interesting that Conner really thinks that Angelus is his father. The kid's wrong, of course. But I like the different ways you can interpret Angelus' relationship to Angel. Angel and Wes think Angelus is like a dark infection inside of Angel. Angel is the real person and Angelus is the disease. Conner and Holtz believe that Angelus is the real person and Angel is the mask he has to wear. Angelus is eager to exploit Conner's fears and it's just cool to watch.

I think this episode shows how much Spike and Angelus learned from each other over the years. In the BTVS season four episode, "The Yoko Factor," Spike splits up the Scoobie gang using his inside knowledge of their relationships and problems. Within half an episode, he has them arguing and walking away from each other. Here in "Soulless" Angelus does the exact same thing. He's ripping into Wes, breaking up Fred and Gunn, and manipulating Conner. He's trying destroying Team Angel using their own insecurities against them. Spike and Angelus aren't even lying when they turn the Scoobies and Team Angel against each other, respectively. The two of them just know their victims so well that they can "lie with the truth." I'm not sure if Spike learned the trick from Angelus somewhere along the line. Or if Angelus, stuck in a cage and unable to fight with his fists, is just channeling some of Spike's unexpected perceptiveness to use as a weapon. But, it's really cool to watch.

On the down side, I don't believe that Angelus would cut a deal with Cordy. When he went after the last woman Angel loved, Buffy, he didn't want to sleep with her. He just wanted her dead. Why would that be different this time around?

My favorite part of the episode: Angelus snarking at Conner that the kid wants to sleep with his "mother" and kill his father. "Someone should write a play."

I wanted to thank you

Warning: Spoilers
By far one of my top ten episodes of the entire series. Angelus is such a conniving, sadistic, manipulative SOB. Exposing his side of Angel this time around was so much better than his first appearance in BTVS. Maybe it's because having seen him before, I was intrigued by what he would be like caged up. The best part of bringing Angelus back was how it had contributing factors leading to Fred & Gunn finally breaking up. Gunn & Angel already knew how Wes felt about Fred but for her to hear it really shook things up. Even when she was thanking Wes for saving her, you could see the conflict of emotions in her eyes. They were made even more apparent when Wes finally kissed her by how she pretty much let him and looked almost mesmerized afterward. Deep down she knew that no matter how much she loved Gunn, she couldn't deny that she had deep feelings for Wes. And the fight, G-d did I love the fight. I know I wasn't the only one who wanted to see Wes & Gunn throw down for a very long time. It just didn't last long enough. What annoyed me with the script though was that it seemed like Fred didn't know Wes felt that strongly for her until Angelus commented on it. As far back as the episode 'Billy' in season 3, you could see that she knew when she told Wes that his actions weren't his fault and later heard him crying.

This episode is probably the first time I began to see Connor's character grow. When he made the comment about Angel just being a shell and Angelus is his real father, WOW. Even Angelus looked like he was taken aback for a second hearing those words. The back and forth comments on the shirt looking good, Cordy looking good, and the boning the mother were too perfect. And how he puked when seeing the dead family. No matter how tough Connor tried to be, you could still see an easily irritable and emotional boy in there.

While I was somewhat shocked to see the jug with Angel's soul missing, it wasn't a shock in some way. Why would you make the show interesting by bringing back Angelus and only having him in one episode. This now paved the way for some interesting times ahead.

When I hear you at night, In your room with Gunn. The things you say. I'm lying there, listening, hands under the covers. Can't help myself, it's so...gripping

Warning: Spoilers
When I hear you at night, In your room with Gunn. The things you say. I'm lying there, listening, hands under the covers. Can't help myself, it's so...gripping - One of my top 5 episodes. I think 'Soulless' has the best script of the entire series, it's an episode where the only thing you gotta do is listen to everything that 'Angelus' says and enjoy how easy it is for him to turn people against each other. David Boreaanz stated in an interview that he prefers playing 'Angelus' because he is a more challenging character, and David Boreanaz plays him perfectly. It's neat how easy he made 'Gunn' angry with the words he said about 'Wesley's feelings for 'Fred' and how he sort of ended that relationship. The best conversation was probably with 'Cordy' as she told him she would give herself to him if he gave them more information about the beast - What's a better ride than a Mustang? and she replies Me. 'Connor' was mentally stronger than the others as he didn't let 'Angelus' words hurt him, his flaw was that if 'Cordy' hadn't walked in, 'Connor' would have gotten himself killed as he was getting closer to the cage. 'Connor' also proves himself to me as a character, Vincent Kartheiser did some great acting, when they found the slaughtered family and he saw that the dad's birthday was coming up he had to barf, 'Connor' always wanted a family so it's a sad moment but a revelation for his character. At the end of the episode they reveal that 'Angel's soul is gone, who could have stolen it? we'll find soon enough. 'Soulless' is to me, probably the most rewatchable episode of the show, the dialog is perfect and so are the performances. ANGELUS: Is that my shirt? CONNOR: Not anymore. ANGELUS: Looks good on you, son. CONNOR: So did Cordy. ANGELUS: She looks good on everybody. (10 out of 10)

The ugly truths
Joxerlives20 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
SOULESS

The Good; Love Connor sticking it to the tourist vamps. The rest of the ep is very Hannibal Lecter (you should only watch Manhunter, the rest are rubbish) and it's interesting how it emotionally affects the rest of the team.

The Bad; The whole idea of Angelus being able to remember something whilst Angel can't is stupid (it's reminiscent of Buffy not being able to read his thoughts in Earshot). That said you wonder does he know the truth about Dawn?

Best line: Angelus (on Connor's Oedipal dilemma) "There should be a play"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? An entire family wiped out

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cheap Angel; 6

Fang Gang in bondage: When they bring back Angelus he's tied to the table. So why did they let him up? Cordy: 5 Angel: 13 Wes: 6 Gunn; 4 Lorne; 4 Fred; 2

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 13 Angel: 16 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1 Gunn; 1 Lorne; 4 Groo; 1

Kills: Connor kills at least 4 vamps. I know he's pretty much an unpopular character but he is heroic, fighting the good fight on the streets. Cordy: 5 vamps, 3 demons Angel; 41 vamps, 57 and 1/2 demons, 5 zombies, 8 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 12 demons+3 vamps, 5 zombies, 2 humans Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; 11 vamps+ 12 demons, 5 zombies, 1 human. Groo; 1 demon Fred; 3 vamp+ 1 demon, 5 zombies Connor; 12 vamps, 5 zombies, 2 demons

Fang Gang go evil: Angel big time Cordy: 2 Angel: 3 Gunn; 1 Wes; 1

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 4 Angel: 10 Fred; 2 Wes; 1 Gunn; 1

Characters killed: the poor Sver family 255

Recurring characters killed; 8;

Total number of Angel Investigations: Angel, Gunn, Fred, Lorne, Wes, CC

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 11 Wes; 1

Packing heat; Wes; 7 Doyle; 1 Angel; 3 Gunn; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Wes and Fred kiss at last, the effective end of Frunn Cordy: 5 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast+Phantom Dennis+Groo+Connor Angel: 5; Buffy, Darla and The Transcending Furies Wes; 3; Virginia, the bleached blonde and Lilah Gunn; 1 Fred Fred; 1 Gunn Groo; 1Cordy

Kinky dinky: Angel refers to Buffy as a 'pistol'. He refers to his 'first nun' and the gypsy girl he got cursed for as a virgin. He thinks the sword in Angel's fantasy as phallic. He imagines Fred as a schoolgirl (as did Lilah) and thinks about bending her over the kitchen counter. Note when he remarks on 'different strokes' he moves his finger suggestively on the bar. He also comments on CC having a 'rack to write home about' which is certainly true. Angelus says he's sure that Angel like's CC on her knees and that Cordy looks good on everyone, is a screamer and a better ride than a Mustang. Angelus also claims he used to hear Fred and Gunn com-shuking but he might be lying. The rest of the gang find out about Connor and CC. CC offers herself to Angelus in return for his info. The translation of the Beast in ancient runes is 'big hard thing'.

Captain Subtext; Angelus considers Angel 'candy-ass'.

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages; 6,

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

Questions and observations; When Angelus is teasing Wes he refers to Faith who is of course coming up. Angel refers to Oedipus which was also referenced in the Buffy ep 'The Puppet Show'. We see Angelus in Prussia in 1789 making his way to Austria. This places him just after Darla abandon's him to Holtz in the barn, they'd agreed to meet in Vienna.

Marks out of 10; 8/10 but it only get's better from here in.

Fantastic

Warning: Spoilers
Another amazing epsiode. And these series makes it up all how many girl and boys are in real life. And here its defently the girls, Cordy and Winifred.

Cordy first uses angels son and kisses him, and then tells him it was wrong. And then on the top of that she sleeps with him cause its her needs. And again, gives damn not to talk about angels feelings for her but also connors. So she just uses him for sex.

And then she tries to hide it from angel and pretends everything is as it should be.

And Fred does the same thing. Its so typicaly people. Just thinks of themself and noone else.

Also love angelous and how evil he is. 9/10

Stinky poopy pants
kingsx_6417 March 2020
This is the first episode of Angel I actually hated. We get all this dialogue about how evil Angelus is before they find a way to remove Angel's soul. Warning after warning of the dangers that are facing them. "You have no idea how bad Angelus is. He's pure evil" etc And then, when Angelus finally emerges, to show us how evil he really is, he hurls childish insults. Huh? He calls Fred skinny (bag of bones) He makes fun of Wes by saying he has a crush on Fred. Um, that's not evil, that's a couple of normal 5yr olds in every school in America. In fact, his insults were so childish and lame, I don't doubt that those 5 yr olds wouldn't make Angelus run home to mommy crying. What the writers used to get in the characters head by "casting doubt" would have made most people cry from laughter. And people liked this? I don't know. Maybe the other reviewers were young when watching. But it wouldn't take me five minutes to write something that would actually sound evil, and not childish. And I'm not even a writer. In fact it got so bad, I have expected him to call someone a Stinky poopy pants. At least that would have made me laugh. But all I got was one hour long eye roll at how "evil" Angelus was.

Angelus Pulling the Strings
Samuel-Shovel23 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Soulless" is the return of Angelus, as the gang tried to figure out what information Angelus has on the Beast and why Angel doesn't remember any of it. Angelus uses Angel's knowledge and weak points of the gang to cause unrest between everyone. He reveals Cordy and Connor's hookup, the love triangle of Fred, Gunn, and Wes is excerbated, and he questions the leadership of Wes.

They learn all they can from the vamp. But when they go to retrieve Angel's soul from the vault to reinstall it, it is now missing.

I love seeing Angelus but playing him off as the ultimate evil is difficult for me to accept. I'm now sure Boreanaz can pull it off either.

The gang breaks off way too easily into factions. They barely needed any encouragement from him. He makes one little comment and all of the sudden Wes is making moves on Fred and him and Gunn are ready to throw down.

I feel like putting the soul in a place where they couldn't keep an eye on it was a bad move. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but it felt dumb even in the moment. Now time to track down that soul I guess?
