A rash of killings in LA has the whole gang worried
katierose29519 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Fathers and sons are a recurring theme on "Angel." These early relationship shape how the characters interact and view the world. (For instance, take Wes's paralyzing fear of his father. It undermines his actions every day, even through his dad is an ocean away.) Angel and Connor's relationship will dominate seasons 3 and 4 (unfortunately) and "Somnambulist" is sort of the prologue to what's to come. Penn, a vampire Angel sired, comes to town and suddenly Angel is seeing his own mistakes reflected and magnified in his vampire "son." This is also the episode where Kate learns that Angel is a vampire, which changes her opinion of him forever. Honestly, this isn't the best episode, but if you're watching on DVD you probably shouldn't skip it.

"Somnambulist" revolves around a rash of killings in LA. The style of the murders are strikingly familiar and Angel is worried. The look a lot like his victims, back when he was Angelus. He's been having nightmares about the killings. (Or dreams, really, as he's been enjoying them.) Wes, meanwhile is also worried about the killings, since he recognizes Angelus' old calling card, a cross carved into the victims cheek. Angel lets Wes and Cordy tie him to to make sure that he isn't somehow committing the crimes. He's not. It's one of the vampires that he sired a couple hundred years ago, an ex-Purtian named Penn. Angel starts hunting him down.

The cops are also looking for Penn. When Kate, Angel and Penn all meet up in a fight, Angel vamps out to battle Penn. Penn escapes. At first, Kate refuses to believe that Angel and Penn are vampires. When she finally sees the truth, though, she no longer wants anything to do with Angel. Penn comes to Angel Inc., to demand some answers as to why Angel's a White Hat now. After terrorizing the gang, Penn decides to get back at Angel by going after Kate. He attacks the police station and drags her into the sewers. Angel has to track him down and save Kate.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like how Wes has done research on Angelus and his history. The guy's good at his job and he's preparing for the worst. (Ironically, when it comes to the worst in season four, Wes is the one who refuses to use drastic measures to reign Angelus back in. No matter what his research tells him, his emotional connect to Angel always wins at the end of the day.) And I really enjoy the scene where Penn comes to the Angel Inc. offices and tries to attack Cordy. He's separated from Angel by this big swath of sunlight. Somehow it seems to represent the divide between them now that Angel has a soul. Penn can't understand what's gone "wrong" with Angel and Angel can't go back to being the "father" he remembers. And all Penn's flashback scenes are pretty fun. I like seeing Angelus, even if it is only for a few minutes. Finally, I like the scene where Angel grabs Kates cross and smoke starts spiraling up. It's just cool.

On the down side, do vampires really have a connection with the vamps they sire? I think that this is the first time that that's been mentioned in the Buffyverse. Spike sure didn't seem to have it when he was siring all those people in BTVS's season seven. Neither does Angel in season five's "Why We Fight." And Angel could have used that trick back in BTVS season two with Drusilla. Just a thought. Also, I've never seen Angelus do that little cross thing on the cheeks before. And I think that there's something wrong with the chronology in this episode. Penn says that he waited for Angel in Italy until the 19th Century, meaning 1800-1899. Angel replies that he got held up in Romania. (Where he regained his soul in 1898.) So, when did Angel plan to get to Italy? He was there with Spike, Darla and Dru during this period (see season five's "The Girl in Question") So, why didn't he hook up with Penn then? And why does no one else ever mention Penn? Where's he been? Did Angelus plan to meet up with him at all? I've never seen Penn in any other flashbacks and in season five's "Destiny" Angelus tells Spike that he's never hunted with another man before. The character of Penn just doesn't make a lot of sense.

My favorite part of the episode: Cordy and Wes's delight that the killer has struck while Angel was chained up, which means that he couldn't have done it. "Great news, sports fans! There's been another murder."

Cordelia: Third body found in alley. So? Not exactly front-page news. Wesley: Actually that is the front page.

Warning: Spoilers
Somnambulist is about a protege from Angel's past, that's responsible for a series of killings.

A solid episode, Penn's a weak character though. He's really been doing the same thing and going unnoticed for two hundred years... and his actions rather immature and petty. Jeremy Renner plays Penn before being a well known star, he's a good actor, but not so great here. Wesley turns on Angel rather quickly, but almost accurately. Cordy truly seeing Angel as a friend now and not just her boss or somebody to help get her somewhere. Kate's reaction's a bit strong, as she's seen the good in him, like Cordy says at the end.

Terrific

Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Very good ep, we genuinely suspect that Angel might be going bad, Penn gives a real sense of menace and some lovely stuff with Kate

The Bad; Penn's haircut but apart from that not much. Would the police really let Kate go in by herself?

Best line: Penn; "You know you'll never get to it the exit before I..."

Cordy (opening blinds letting the daylight pour in) "...go up like a match?" (nothing more satisfying than seeing arrogance shot down)

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Penn kills his sister and presumably goes on to massacre his family as Angelus did

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; nope, 2.

In disguise; 3

DB get's his shirt off; 3

Cordy's tattoo;3

Cheap Angel; 2

Fang Gang in bondage: Angel Cordy: 5 Angel: 5 Wes: 1

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 8 Angel: 7 Wes: 1 Doyle; 1

Kills: Cordy: 3 vamps, ½ a demon from her time in Sunnydale Angel: 8 vamps, 4 demons, 2 humans. Doyle; 1 vamp Kate; 1 vamp

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 1 Angel: 1

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 5

Characters killed: Penn's victims 20

Recurring characters killed; 1;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 2, Angel and Cordy

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 5,

Packing heat; Doyle; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 1? Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky: Cordy comments that she makes the coffee and gets to chain the boss to the bed. The everyday life of a Hollywood assistant.

Captain Subtext; Angel(us) is obviously Penn's father figure. Angel(us) is also obsessed with his father

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 3, once again, Angel and Wes just seem to be able to drive into the police station.

Buffy characters appearing in Angel; (unless someone can correct me no original Angel character ever appears on Buffy?) 6; Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes

Questions and observations; Very nice reminder from Angel(us) past and the beginning of the real tension between Kate and Angel. Another hint that vamps share some link with those they sired. Love Kate's white sweater. Wes is now in the title sequence. Angel Investigations has a runaway case so they're obviously taking ordinary PI cases in addition to their supernatural work. Does Angel figure out Penn's plan because he knows him? Or is he heading to the police station to speak to Kate over the school bus plan? Or do Wes and he just overhear what's going on at the station with their police scanner? Penn in some ways is reminiscent of Scorpio in Dirty Harry (who also hijacks a school bus). Met Jeremy Renner at a convention and a fascinating guy, plays in a band, old friend of DB's from their acting classes, went on to star in 28 Weeks Later (as a character called Doyle?), SWAT, The Hurt Locker, Jesse James, Thor before reuniting with Joss as Hawkeye in The Avengers

Marks out of 10; 9/10 would be 10/10 if it had more arc.

Wow, You look half-dead. Which for someone, who's completely dead, would be, kind of neat?

Warning: Spoilers
Wow, You look half-dead. Which for someone, who's completely dead, would be, kind of neat? - I watched this episode for the first time on DVD, I was afraid that I would not like the rest of the season because of 'Doyle's death and 'Wesley's arrival but I was so pleasantly surprised, it was everything I wanted this show to be, flashbacks and vampire issues and don't forget about the character development and the chemistry between them. This episode changes a lot of things, 'Doyle' is now officially dead as Alexis Denisof replaced Glenn Quinn on the intro. And the 'Kate' character finally discovers 'Angel's vampiric background. Despite it's darkness the 'Cordy' character always brings some great comedy to the show like the scene where 'Wes' told her that their boss might have turned into 'Angelus' again - You stake him and I'll cut his head off. I'm also a huge sucker for vampire characters 'Penn' who is played by Jeremy Renner is one of my favorite one-episode character, he did a great job playing the twisted and clichéd vampire that was trained by 'Angel' for 200 years. I love the end when 'Kate' puts a huge stake through 'Angel' without dusting him but dusting 'Penn' instead. 'Wes' might not be as lovely as 'Doyle' yet, but the character-dynamics are still there, and I loved 'Angel's conversation with 'Cordy' at the end - I'll kill you dead - Thanks - What are friends for?. PENN: Well, you were right about one thing, Angelus. The last 200 years has been about me sticking it to my father. But I've come to realize something, it's you! You made me! You taught me! You approved of me in ways my mortal father never did! You are my real father, Angelus. ANGEL: Fine! You re grounded. (10 out of 10)

Downturn

Warning: Spoilers
When we first saw Kate, the chemistry between her and Angel was amazing. Even in this episode up until Angel gave her the drawing of Penn, she still said she trusted him. However, that was ruined because this is the episode where Angel & Kate's relationship began to go south. Even though he was there as a friend and emotional shoulder previously, Kate freaked out when Angel went vamp while fighting Penn. After researching Angel's past, she totally forgot about everything he had done for her and basically gave him the finger. However, when Angel defended her while fighting Penn the second time in the sewer, we saw the original side of Kate. This was made evident when Penn had Angel in the full nelson and Kate shoved the large stake through Angel to kill Penn. When he said "You missed" and she replied "No, I didn't", it showed that Kate still needed and trusted Angel in some way, not matter how angry at him she was.
