Best. Cliffhanger. Ever.
katierose2955 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I saw only "Angel" after the show had been canceled. I got the DVDs as a birthday gift last year and wound up watching all five seasons in one long, glorious row. One episode after another for a couple of weeks. Sometimes, I wish I'd seen the show before it left the air. But, when "Release" rolled around I was SOOOOOO glad that I could just see the next episode immediately. Waiting a week to resolve this cliffhanger must've been pure torture. Honestly, this whole episode is terrific. Wes & Faith continue to steal the show in the quest to find Angelus and pretty much ever minute of it is a joy. I highly recommend it.

"Release" revolves around Wes & Faith's new plan to capture Angelus. they want to trank-dart him and restore his soul, but first the have to find him. Meanwhile, Evil Cordy is communicating with Angelus and wants him to join her side. Instead, Angelus decides to go to the Hyperion and steal all Team Angel's information on the Beast and its Master. Conner tries to fight him, but the sanctuary spell Lorne cast to prevent demon violence kicks in. Which means Conner is part demon. Wes & Faith go to some demon bars and find some people taking drugs and letting vampires feed off of them. It give them both a high, apparently. Wes & Faith eventually track Angelus to a deserted museum place. Angelus knocks Wes out and fights Faith. He gets the upper hand and bites her.

There are some good parts of this episode. I love Angelus arguing with Evil Cordy's voice in his head. His line "You can kiss my vampire ass" just makes me laugh every time. And he looks really cute wearing those stolen reading glasses and trying to read the papers he stole from the Hyperion. He's convinced that half of it is just doodles. Still, I think Evil Cordy is nuts if she thinks she can get Angelus over to her team. The guy doesn't play well with others, unless he's the boss. Just ask the Master. (See season two's "Darla.") I think Faith and Wes questioning people in that bar is pretty fun, too. Faith is having a hard time adjusting to "new" Wesley. When Angelus grabs him, Wes wants Faith to shoot right through him to get Angelus and he was serious. It's kinna a shock for her to see that Wes is now in control. For the first time, Faith starts listening to Weslsy like her Watcher, following his plans and respecting his authority. It's cool. Finally, the fight with Angelus in that museum or whatever just flat-out rocks. Most days, Spike, Buffy & Angel are pretty evenly matched. Any one of them could be called the strongest, depending on the battle or circumstances. But, I've never seen anyone in the Buffyverse fight harder that Angelus in "Release." If he'd fought like that back in BTVS season two, or if Angel did in season five's "Destiny," I don't think Buffy and Spike could have ever beaten him. It was amazing.

On the down side, is Conner a total idiot? It's bad enough that he wants to kill Angelus and is falling for Evil Cordy's tricks, but now he's looking in the MIRROR to see if maybe he's a vampire?!? I mean COME ON! If he was a vampire, then he wouldn't HAVE a reflection, for crying out loud! The kid drives me insane with his stupidity.

My favorite part of the episode: Wes stabbing that woman in the shoulder to get information. When you think back to season three of BTVS, it's amazing to realize that this is the same guy who once tried to hide behind Giles during a demon fight. Wes has slowly and believably become the hardest person in the Buffyverse. When you manage to shock Faith with your brutality, ya know you've crossed into some pretty dark territory, Wes.

My other favorite part of the episde: Angelus' line "Uh-oh! Vampire with a gun!" just cracks me up every time I hear it.

You're preaching to the guy who ate the choir
SleepTight66626 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
You're preaching to the guy who ate the choir - I love this episode even more than 'Salvage', despite it not having 'The Beast'. 'Angelus' once again steals the show, I can't stress enough how much I love his character, it is such a shame he's only in one more episode. I also loved 'Cordy' as the beast master, she gets creepier and creepier by episode, especially when she has those creepy white-eyes. 'Faith' is also once again, awesome! from her ass-kicking shower scene till her fight with 'Angelus', I loved it all. However, my favorite character this episode has got to be 'Wesley', he's so badass, stabbing that girl for information, driving 'Faith' over the edge, and then with his awesome shut-gun, can he get any cooler than this? We also learn that 'Connor' is special, in other words, not human. I loved the scene where he looks in the mirror to see if he can vamp out, silly boy. All in all, awesome episode. I also loved the Angelus/Faith fight sequence almost as much as the Beast/Faith fight sequence, but at least in this one, 'Angelus' ended up biting 'Faith'. ANGELUS: Now, this is disappointing. You never used to bleed so easy. FAITH: Screw you. ANGELUS: Maybe after. I like my girls to lie still. (10 out of 10)

It just keeps getting better!
Joxerlives25 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
RELEASE

The Good; The Wes and Faith hurt/comfort scenes are excellent. The hunting of Angelus is magnificent.

The Bad; Wes' shotgun seems to contain an inordinate amount of shells?

Best line: Lorne "Mojo?" Fred "Nojo" also like; Vamp (as the daylight returns); "What the f...?"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Hard to watch Faith all banged up and self harming in Wes' shower, you'd think Eliza naked in a shower would normally be cause for celebration but not this time. A magic shop owner badly beaten but at least alive, if this was Sunnydale he'd be a goner.

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cheap Angel; 6

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 13 Wes: 6 Gunn; 4 Lorne; 4 Fred; 2

Kills; one vamp for Wes Cordy: 5 vamps, 3 demons Angel; 41 vamps, 57 and 1/2 demons, 5 zombies, 8 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 12 demons+4 vamps, 5 zombies, 2 humans Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 18 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Characters killed: 255

Recurring characters killed; 9;

Total number of Angel Investigations: Angel, Gunn, Fred, Lorne, Wes, CC, Connor, Faith

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 12 Wes; 1 Wes; 7 Doyle; 1 Angel; 3 Gunn; 2

Packing heat; Wes breaks out his shotgun Wes; 8 Doyle; 1 Angel; 3 Gunn; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Fred wants Gunn back but he turns her down. Connor is at least part demon meaning 4 out of CC's 5 lovers have been some form of supernatural creatures. Cordy: 5 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast+Phantom Dennis+Groo+Connor Angel: 5; Buffy, Darla and The Transcending Furies Wes; 3; Virginia, the bleached blonde and Lilah Gunn; 1 Fred Fred; 1 Gunn Groo; 1Cordy

Kinky dinky: Faith actually has the most unerotic shower scene for a beautiful woman in the history of TV. Apparently CC and Angelus both 'like to watch'. The demon declares he thought 'she was 18'. Faith refers to being 'spanked'. Angelus says 'That hurt. I liked it'. Wes refers to Sylvia Plath who wrote about the 'Electra complex' referring to Agamenon's relationship with his daughter in Greek mythology but also a term for girls' quest for a father figure throughout their lives (Buffy/Giles, Faith/Giles, Faith/The Mayor and finally here's Faith/Wes as the Watcher's Council always intended). Faith; "Screw you!" Angelus; "Maybe after! I like my girls to lie still" CC knocked up AGAIN! 3rd time in 5 years. Does she ever meet a demon she doesn't get impregnated by? Taboo Comics/Monsters and Angels anyone?

Captain Subtext; Angelus is told he's going to be the master's 'bitch' like the Beast. And so he is. "Master". The junkie in the vamp brothel thinks Faith is pretty and asks if she wants to make out? She seems tempted (maybe missing the communal soapings in the prison showers?). Wes says that the girl probably enjoyed Faith hitting her and says that Faith is still looking for some S&M punishment. Angelus refers to Wes as a 'ponce'.

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages; 6,

Guantanamo Bay; Faith and Wes torture their way through LA, he's so hardcore even she's outraged.

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

What the fanficcers thought; So what if Angelus had really turned Faith? A lot written on this idea but a sequel to them all has Faith's Slayer nature taking over and getting them both resouled.

Questions and observations; Fred's good with a tranquilizer gun but then she is from Texas. Her hair rather makes her look like Princess Leia. The one horned demon in the bar sounds an awful lot like Merle. How much of losing the fight is Faith faking? Faith is bitten by Angelus, Xander, Tara, Wes and Oz, the only Sunnydale Scoobies never to be bitten by a vampire.

Marks out of 10; 10/10 no question.

Faith and Wes on the Hunt
Samuel-Shovel22 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In "Release", after killing the Beast, Angelus begins to hear the big bad's voice in his head. He learns that this entity has his soul. Faith recovers from the previous battle. Cordy and Connor decide to hide her pregnancy from the group. Angelus steals all the info the group has on the big bad. Wes and Faith leave to hunt him down. Gunn and Fred deal with their romantic entanglement. In the end, they find him but Angelus bites Faith as the episode ends.

The tone and decisions of some of these characters is a bit bizarre and inconsistent. Wes is unhinged one minute and then cold and calculated the next. His feelings for Fred seem to have taken an immediate backseat with the return of Faith for some reason. His torturing of the junkie felt uncharacteristic and more like something we'd see from Faith. Angelus trying to psychoanalysis Faith is another odd inclusion. I enjoyed the episode but it feels like different writers have different ideas on what direction we're heading.
