Enter Wesley

Warning: Spoilers
I love Wesley. His slow evolution from nervous goof ball, to loyal friend, to bitter outcast, to unshaven hard ass is probably the most compelling transformation in the course of show. Wes routinely steals scenes from Spike and Angel and, since they're my favorite characters, you know I've got to really like this guy to say that. Wes can do anything and keep it sympathetic, understandable and --well-- Cool. He's one of the greatest characters in all of the Buffyverse. "Parting Gifts" is Wes's first episode on "Angel." He did appear in the second half of BTVS season three, where he first met Cordy and Angel. But if you haven't seen those episode, don't worry. It's pretty easy to follow along without them. Just watch "Parting Gifts" and you'll understand the back story pretty fast.

Basically, "Parting Gifts" revolves around Cordy inheriting Doyle's visions. That kiss he gave her at the end of "Hero" passed his visions on to her, so now she's getting the headaches and flashes of people in trouble. Cordy is horrified with her "gift" and tries to get rid of it by kissing Angel and any other man she meets. It doesn't work. Cordy's stuck with the visions and, when she sees a "ugly gray blob-y thing" in one of them, she tries to draw it for Angel. Meanwhile, a empath demon has come to Angel for help. He says that someone is after him. Angel agrees to investigates. It turns out that the person tracking the demon is Wesley. He's been fired from the Council and is now a freelance "rouge demon hunter." He says that the demon is dangerous. Angel says he's not. And right about then they realize they're discussing different demon. A gigantic demon drops from the ceiling and escapes them both.

Angel takes Wes home and tries to figure out what's going on. He starts trailing the big demon again, telling Wes and Cordy to stay behind with the empath demon. After Doyle's death, he doesn't want to work with anyone else. Wes ignores him. He follows Angel to the big demon's hiding place, but it isn't evil. It's dying. Someone has stolen it's magical horn and Wes and Angel begin to see that they're made a mistake. The empath demon with Cordy is really a auctioneer, who sells supernatural stuff. He stole the horn and a lot of other powerful items from other demons. When he discovers that Cordelia is a seer, he decided to kidnap her and auction her off. Wes and Angel desperately search for her. Finding one of Cordy's drawings of the "ugly gray blob-y thing," they realize that it's really a sculpture at a nearby hotel. They arrive in time to save Cordy, stab the empath demon with the magical horn, and Wes is on his way to becoming part of the Angel Inc. team.

There are some really fun parts to this episode. I love Cordy kissing everyone she meets trying to get rid of her visions. It's especially funny when she tries it with Wes because he drags her forward and kisses her back. It's a nice little nod to BTVS season three's "Graduation Day Part Two" where Wes and Cordy tried kissing with very little success. Clearly, Wes is getting better at it. And Cordy's break down at her audition is also hilarious. She's weeping over Doyle, screaming as a vision hits her and possibly even drooling. The casting people just look at her and say, "Okay, we'll let you know." I also like that Wes is still trying to fight evil, but he's not sure how to go about it. He's been fired from the Council, but demon fighting (or rouge demon hunting) is just what he does. He's surprisingly good at a lot of it, for all his anxious mistakes. Wes can understand demon languages and do research faster than anyone. He's also a heck of a shot. His relationship with Angel and Cordy gives Wesley the security to be himself. Wes is fighting evil, not because he was tapped by the PTB, but because he wants to help. And Angel and/or Cordy desperately need his expertise about once an episode for the next five seasons. With them, he's found a home. A place where he can fight evil his own way and finally fit in. It's cool. Finally, I really enjoy the supernatural auction. Cordy shouting at the participants over their low biding, the demon guys killing each other, Wolfram and Hart getting involved... It all just fun.

On the down side, I feel bad that the big horned demon died. He seemed like an innocent victim. Also, I think it would have made more sense if Wes identified that statue instead of Angel. It's seems sort of modern for Angel to know on sight. Finally, what happens to that picture Cordy framed? I don't think that we ever see it again.

My favorite part of the episode: Cordy, Angel and Wes all sitting down to breakfast with each other at the end. It's just a really sweet scene that makes me smile every time.

The One Where Wesley's A "Rouge Demon Hunter"...
taylorkingston6 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. It's so funny. I just love it so much.

In this episode, we meet Wesley. Well, not really meet him, if you watched Season 3 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, you would have already known him. He was a watcher. Faith's watcher. But after failing at that, he was fired and decided to put his demon knowledge to good use. He became a "rouge demon hunter". He came to Los Angeles whilst tracking a demon. He finds Angel and Angel has a new client. Which it turns out, is the demon Wesley was tracking. This mysterious demon leads us to believe that he was also tracking the demon. But, he played everyone including Cordelia, Angel and Wesley, and even us, the audience. It turns out that he is the demon Wesley wants. And eventually kills him.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10.

I didn t ask for this responsibility, unlike some people, who shall remain lifeless

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't ask for this responsibility, unlike some people, who shall remain lifeless - The beginning of a new area as a new character gets introduced and an old character begins to change from a b!tch into a hero. This was the last season one episode I watched on TV as I was so upset with 'Doyle's death and wasn't too crazy about 'Wesley' at that time. It was really impossible to guess how much 'Wesley' would grow into one of the best characters ever on television, because in this episode he was just a lame dork, A fun lame work. But still a lame dork. What makes this episode interesting for me was 'Cordy', she had countless of great moments like her audition which always cracks me up as she begins to cry, and then suddenly gets her first vision. I love how the jury react as they think she's just acting. And then of course when she tries to get rid of her visions by kissing every frog she can find, including 'Wes', their kissed seemed to be a lot better then their first to say the least. 'Barney' on the other hand was a very irritating character who kidnaps 'Cordy' to sell her at an auction, I did love the scene where she pretends to be having a vision and then kicks him in his private part. The episode was pretty dry, but not nearly as bad as I used think. I really like the ending where 'Wesley' eats eggs with 'Cordy' and 'Angel' which begins a whole new bond. Good old times. CORDELIA: Wesley? What are you doing here? Are you working with Angel? WESLEY: A lone wolf, such as myself, never works with anyone. I'm merely allowing Angel to assist me. CORDELIA: Oh, wow. WESLEY: I'm a rogue demon hunter now. CORDELIA: Oh, wow. What's a rogue demon? (7.0 out of 10)

Parting Gifts
Joxerlives6 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Wonderful reintroduction for Wes and a nice period of mourning for Doyle. Plus Cordy's audition and the Oracles again.

The Bad; Once again, Alexis Denisoff's name is in the titles, ruining the surprise a little

Best line: "Grass stains!" (all in the delivery). Also liked Wes "I bet you always wondered what became of your old pal Wesley?" Angel; "Tell you the truth I never gave it much thought"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Barney's plans for Cordy are beyond horrible. But she teaches him not to mess with Queen C

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; nope, 2.

In disguise; 3

DB get's his shirt off; 3

Cordy's tattoo; 3 yep she bares that beautiful midriff again

Cheap Angel; 2

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 4 Wes: 1

Fang gang knocked out: yep, Cordy Cordy: 9 Angel: 7 Wes: 1 Doyle; 1

Kills: Cordy: none this ep. 3 vamps, ½ a demon from her time in Sunnydale Angel: 1 demon for Angel. So that gives Angel 8 vamps, 4 demons, 2 humans. Doyle; 1 vamp

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 1 Angel: 1

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 5

Characters killed: 14

Recurring characters killed; 1;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 2, Angel and Cordy

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 5,

Packing heat; Doyle; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 1? Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky: Wes in motorbiking leathers which are so tight they 'chafe'. He and Cordy share a second kiss, Cordy is sold as a slave for the first time but by no means the last.

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 2

Buffy characters appearing in Angel;(unless someone can correct me no original Angel character ever appears on Buffy?) 6; Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes

Questions and observations; Another WR&H lackie but this one doesn't become a recurring character. Angel says that vamps don't sleep in coffins but Dracula does. Angel recognises talent when he sees it, Wes' translation skills alone make him invaluable. Pretty obvious that Barney later inspires the character of Lorne.

Marks out of 10; 7/10

Angel: And behave yourself. I don't want to find you two necking on the couch when I get back.
bombersflyup19 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Parting Gifts is about coming to terms with the loss of Doyle and Cordy inheriting his visions. It's also about an empath demon and the arrival of Wesley.

It doesn't have the best plot, but it's a comfortably toned down episode. Wesley's a weak and silly character on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and introduced in the same manner here, but settles in otherwise rather quickly. Entirely different to Doyle, but becomes an exceptional and integral character in the series. I like Barney's verbal spout with Cordy, that she's aware she's a terrible actress, that he knows it because she feels it. The Wolfram & Hart representative here is ruthless, I dunno if Lindsey could of done that. Cordy's particularly good.
