One of the greatest episodes of the entire series
katierose2955 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This is the best episode of the season. In fact, I think that it's probably in the top five episodes of the whole series. (In my opinion only season two's "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been," and season five's "You're Welcome," "Destiny," & "Hole in the World" give it any real competition.) "Orpheus" provides more insight into Angel's history, brings Willow to town, restores Angel's soul and is just so flat-out fun that I always hate to see it end. You really need to see it.

"Orpheus" revolves around Angelus finally being captured. It turns out that Faith & Wes set him up. When he bit her in "Release," Angelus didn't know that Faith had spiked her blood with that mystical drug from the demon bar. Now Angelus & Faith are both unconscious and back at the Hyperion. Faith is dying from the drug. Lorne is furious at Wes for giving it to her, but Wesley insists that Faith knew what she was doing. The only thing they can do now is get Angel's soul back. Luckily, Fred has called Willow in to help them. (Willow put Angel's soul back once before in BTVS season two's "Becoming Part Two") She thinks that she can do it again. No one is aware that Evil Cordy is plotting to stop them. She tells Conner that in order to protect the baby, he has to kill Angelus.

Meanwhile, the drug has linked Faith and Angelus' dreams. They're stuck in Angel's memories, reliving his life. Neither one of the is thrilled to see the other. Faith is waiting around to die, finally satisfied that she's done enough and can just quit fighting. Angelus is furious that he has to look at Angel's life again. They watch as Angel tries to stay on the righteous path. Feeding on rats, slipping and drinking blood from a dying human, hiding alley ways so he doesn't have to face the world... As Faith gets closer to dying, Angel suddenly starts talking to her. He says that he wants her to see all this so she realizes that he's made mistakes, too. But they both have to keep fighting. Angel and Angelus begin to hit each other.

Back in the real world, Willow magically brakes the jar holding Angel's soul and puts it back in his body. Faith wakes up from her drugged coma and races down stairs to find Conner. She gets there just in time to stop Conner from staking Angel. Faith and Conner fight, then Angel stops them and explains that he's back to being a White Hat again. With the return of his soul, Angel says that they have to get to work fighting the Beast's Master. Willow & Faith leave for Sunnydale. Cordy comes downstairs and finally tells Team Angel that she's pregnant.

There are a lot of good parts to this episode. Conner's not my favorite character, but it was nice of him to try and comfort Wes when Faith is dying. He says that Wes did the right thing and that Faith chose her own own path because she's a warrior. It's one of the only times I agree with the kid. And I like Willow and Fred interacting. They're so giggly and (inadvertantly on Fred's part) flirty with each other. Willow finally blurts out, "I'm seeing someone" and Fred just blinks in confusion. And it's always fun to see Willow and Cordy in a scene again. "How've you been?" asks Will. Cordy shrugs, "Higher Power. You?" Willow nods, "Ultimate evil." I just have to laugh. Finally, I love the end of the episode as Faith and Wes say good-bye. "Faith." Says Wes. "Wes." Says Faith. Then she smiles, because "Brits" know how to do farewells. "Angel wanted to hug." She tells Wesley. "No I didn't." Angel mutters. Although it's pretty clear that --yeah-- He did. Angel's such a sweetie and I'm glad he's back.

Mostly thought, I love this episode because of Angelus and Faith stuck in Angel's memories. From his arrival in America at Ellis Island, to his disco hair to the rat eating, I think it just adds so much back story to Angels' character. It explain what happened to him between "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" and BTVS "Becoming Part One." How he went from living in a hotel to drinking the blood of rats. It's really brilliant. Angel just gave up. It wasn't until he met Whistler & Buffy that he found his mission. That's what he's trying to tell Faith: Giving up is worse than failing. Angel has made a lot of mistakes, but he knows that the only way to find redemption is to keep trying. Plus, his heroic puppy rescue, while Angelus throws a temper tantrum, is one of the funniest moments of the entire series.

On the down side, I'm sad that this is Faith's last episode on the show. I like her better on "Angel" than on BTVS and I wish she'd come back. Her friendship with Angel is sweet to watch and she really adds something to the show.

My favorite part of the episode: Angelus' hatred of Barry Manilow. Angel says that even with a soul, he's done things that he regrets. Angelus bellowing, "Like those Manilow concerts, you son of a b*tch!" cracks me up every time.

The journey of an Angel and Faith
xenatorres23 September 2007
Faith is probably one of the best characters ever created for a TV series. Her journey from hero, to villain, to a woman trying to find redemption is a powerful one. Faith's guilt and self loathing, especially in this episode, make her a powerful character and one you want to see reach a happy ending to her journey.

Elisa Dushku is brilliant as Faith, her best role to date, mostly due to the wide range this character has afforded her to play.

The journey of both Faith and Angelus through Angel's past was very well written and a great way to give Faith the strength to continue with her own journey, to fight the good fight again rather than merely rotting in jail.

A very powerful, well written, beautifully directed episode of "Angel".

Third 10/10 in a row!
Joxerlives22 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The Good; Fabulous, the wonderful flashbacks and Faith and Willow working together with AI, just amazing!

The Bad; All too wonderful for anything like that. A bit stupid that they put Ally's name in the opening titles, spoils the surprise of her appearance somewhat.

Best line; Faith; "Dust in the wind. Candle in the wind. There'll be a general wind theme" plus flapper "Pound snow you mook!"

Apocalypses: 5

Fang Gang in bondage: Angel chained up at the end Cordy: 5 Angel: 14 Wes: 6 Gunn; 4 Lorne; 4 Fred; 2

Fang gang knocked out: Faith in a coma, again! Gunn knocked out by Connor Cordy: 15 Angel: 16 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1 Gunn; 2 Lorne; 5 Groo; 1 Connor; 1 Faith; 1

Kinky dinky:

CC accuses Connor of liking the way Faith 'cracked her whip' and thinks he wants to be in her 'leather clad lap'. Wes tells Willow about having a woman chained in a closet, she seems more intrigued than shocked. Angelus refers to keeping Faith's thighs warm. CC and Connor's relationship is described as 'icky'. Faith says of Connor 'Break me off a switch, there's going to be a whipping!". Angelus refers to 'eating' his mama!!!!

Captain Subtext; Willow describes Connor as handsome and androgynous, hmmmm? Plenty of Fred/Willow subtext, even Wes gives a little look when Willow strokes Fred's chin, especially when Willow asks 'What's Fred's story?' and speaks of 'The call of Fred'. Fred wants to discuss Baachanals with Willow. However she later tells Fred 'I'm seeing someone' by which she means Kennedy back in Sunnydale. Faith calls Angelus 'princess'.

What the fanficcers thought; Not much fic on this ep itself but quite a lot of slashfic on Willow and Faith's drive back to Sunnydale, Willow saying she 'Got a Slayer' from the whole affair.

Missing scenes; According to the commentary we have an extra scene where Faith and Angelus see Angel discovering the Hyperion? Why not include that on special edition DVDs?

Questions and observations; Willow makes her 3rd appearance on Angel. This is actually quite momentous as it means she's actually the 2nd most prolific character in the Buffyverse. Angel is number 1 with 167eps (57eps of Buffy and 110 eps of his own show), Willow is 2nd with 147eps (144 eps of Buffy and 3 appearances on Angel) and Buffy herself is joint 3rd with 146eps (144 eps of her own show and 2 guest slots on Angel not counting archive footage taken from Buffy or the movie) with Cordy who also has 146 appearances (57 eps of Buffy and 89eps of Angel). Then comes Xander with 143 eps of Buffy (he's in every ep of Buffy except 'Conversations with Dead People'), Giles with 123 eps of Buffy, Spike with 120 (97 eps of Buffy and 23 of Angel) and Wes with 107 (6eps of Buffy and 101 of Angel).

I'm sure most Xena fans will recognise Adrienne Wilkinson who played Xena's daughter Livia/Eve as the flapper whose dog Angel saves. Met her at a convention once and she's beautiful and charming. Gina Torres, another Xena/Hercules alumni will turn up in a few eps time and Orpheus is the name of an early Xena ep.

The flashbacks help us track the various stages of Angel through the years. They basically fall down to; 1. Post resouling daze; (as seen in Darla) 2. Try to get back with Darla in Peking; 3. Coming to America; ('Orpheus') 4. Brooding loner; (up until the events of 'Are you now or ever have been?') 5. Hedonism aka The Manilow Years; (up until feeding on the guy in the doughnut shop in Orpheus) 6. Street tramp; (up until meeting Whistler in Becoming pt2) 7. Sunnydale CC refers to Willow as Glinda, the good witch from The Wizard of Oz (Cordy herself doing a good impression of the Wizard behind the screen). If you haven't seen Wicked go immediately, it's great and you'll never watch TWOO the same way again. What a shame we never get Barry Manilow to guest star as he did on Will and Grace. Gunn once again tells Connor off, once again playing the father role to him. With the exception of flashback this will be the last time we see Angelus begging the question is he actually gone for good after Angel and Angelus' epic face off in the dreamworld.

Marks out of 10; 10/10 Faith AND Willow in the same episode of Angel, makes you want to cry with happiness! Rewatched this one 4 times! I know I previously said 5 by 5 was my favourite but actually this is my favourite although the Wes drops the knife bit is still my favourite moment ever

Angelus & Faith in Dream World
Samuel-Shovel27 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In "Orpheus", Faith and Wes trick Angelus. Faith poisons herself, knowing Angelus will bite her. It knocks both of them into comas. A weird side effect of this is that Faith ends up in Angelus' dreams with him. Meanwhile, Willow shows up to try to retrieve Angel's soul. Cordy secretly tried to stop her but Willow wins out in the end, destroying the jar keeping Angel's soul and then using another spell to reinsert it into Angel. Cordy manipulates Connor into trying to kill Angelus but Angelus and Faith wake up just in time to stop anything bad from happening. Willow leaves town to return to Sunnydale. Cordy reveals her pregnancy to the gang as the episode ends.

We're really going through a strong streak of episodes here! We get some fun flashbacks here, some good banter between Faith and Angelus since the two can't hurt each other in dreamland (for most of the episode anyway), and Cordy's puppet master act continues to fool Connor. My favorite part though is the ending: Cordy walking down the stairs dressed up like Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Classic!

Anybody notice a battle with your alter-ego going on here?
SleepTight6663 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Anybody notice a battle with your alter-ego going on here? - A fantastic ending of the 'Faith' arc. There is so much going on in this episode, including 'Willow' paying the gang a visit, the first crossover in more than a year. I have to say that 'Willow's dialog was a bit irritating, but I did like the flirting with 'Fred' and her scenes with 'Wesley' and 'CordEvila'. The flashbacks were simply the best, we saw 'Angel' rescuing a puppy and then eat a shop keeper. The fight sequence between 'Angel' and 'Angelus' was awesome, I would have been happy either way with the winner. The only thing I didn't like about the 'Faith'-episodes were 'Connor', he's one of my favorite characters but during these episodes, he only got bad dialog and was just there to make 'Faith' look good, just an excuse to make everyone hate him and let 'Faith' beat him up. I loved the magic battle between 'CordEvila' and 'Willow'- I think I bit my tongue and the cliff-hanger ending with 'CordEvila' revealing to everyone that she's pregnant. Fantastic episode, too bad 'Faith' had to leave the show, again. ANGEL: How're you feeling? FAITH: Like I did mushrooms and got eaten by a bear. ANGEL: That about sums it up. FAITH: Yep.
