A great Lorne episode
katierose2955 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Season four of BTVS has one of my all-time favorite Buffyverse episodes, "Something Blue." In that one, Willow casts a spell that has everyone acting strangely under her inadvertent mystical suggestions. It's really, REALLY funny. "Life of the Party" is sort of the same plot. It's a little less funny than "Something Blue," but still a great episode that puts Lorne front and center. It also introduces some characters who will be back later in the season. So if you're watching the season on DVD, I recommend that you see it.

"Life of the Party" revolves around Lorne's Halloween party. Wolfram & Hart has one every year, but the demon community is scared to attended under Angel's management. He might kill all the guests. Lorne is frantic to ensure the party's success and he's badgering Team Angel about their "ho-hum" attitudes. He tells Fred and Wes that they MUST come and get drunk. He tells Gunn to mark out his territory and convince Angel to listen. He tells Spike to be positive. He tells Angel to lighten up and that instead of arguing, he & Eve should just "get a room." Pretty soon, all of his suggestions are actually happening. Fred and Wes are drunk for no reason. Gunn is urinating all over the office. Spike is cheerfully announcing that he loves EVERYTHING. Angel is gushing at the guests and sleeping with Eve. Clearly something mystical is afoot.

It turns out that Lorne had Wolfram & Hart remove his sleep so he could accomplish more. But, because he's an empath demon, there are side effects. Instead, of reading destinies, he's creating them. Also, his subconscious is manifesting itself as a big angry monster and killing people. All the conflicts that Lorne usually resolves in his sleep are suddenly being fought right in the open. One of the guests, Arch Duke Sebasis, is sure that Angel is trying to kill him. Really, its Lorne's subconscious. But Team Angel has to fight him and replace Lorne's sleep before it's too late.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like everyone under the effects the spell. Especially, Wes and Fred. They're stumbling around, drunkenly bonding. Fred asks how much alcohol he's consumed and Wes sort of squints, "About a third of a half of this beer." His woozy precision just cracks me up. And I think it's pretty hilarious that it's Spike's new attitude that has everyone realizing they're under a spell. They're trying to explain what's going on, but when he comes over, smiling and dancing to to the music, they just know it's gotta be magic. Also, I enjoy "Angel" picking up the BTVS tradition of celebrating Halloween. Spike's been complaining for years that real demons just ignore the holiday, but again and again he's proved wrong. It seems like something weird happens just about every October. (See season BTVS two's "Halloween," season four's "Fear, Itself," and season six's "All the Way.") Finally, that demon in the "human" costume is great... In an evil sort of way.

I just love Lorne and I'm glad he has an episode. He's always funny, but when he starts pressuring people into the party, I really have to laugh. They're all so shocked when he starts ranting at them. Angel gets this mystified look on his face and he actually does what Lorne says. Poor Angel hates parties (see season one's "She.") All he wants to do is watch hockey and brood in the dark. But he grudgingly goes along with the celebration because of Lorne. I think that season five is Lorne's best season. It's the first time we see some of his deeper emotions. He's always so friendly and understanding, but under it all he's a real "person." He sees things clearly and he knows himself. He's starting to betray his identity and, the more he realizes it, the more it worries him. But he loves Team Angel, so he's slowly being drawn away from who he is really is. Like everyone working at Wolfram & Hart, Lorne's starting to feel compromised and lost. He's the one I feel sorriest for by the end of the season.

On the down side, Eve and Angel sleeping together kinna creeps me out. But it's a funny scene, so I'll cut it some slack.

My favorite part of the episode: Gunn trying to understand why he's urinating on everything. Angel asks if Lorne told him to do it and Gunn's worried reply, "Lord, I hope so" is just one of my favorite lines ever.

Nice to get some serious Lorne time

LIFE OF THE PARTY

The Good; Great acting from Andy Hallet, really showing some range here. Love the characterisation of Sebassis, he's like a demonic Noel Coward. "Yes, yes, sycophants writhe before me, you disgust me!"

The Bad; Why do Knox and co keep referring to last years party? I thought the Beast killed everyone except Lilah? Were they brought in from WR&H branches in other cities? Obviously this ep owes a lot to the Buffy ep Something Blue with the Lorne storyline thrown in. The monster Lorne just looks stupid, reminds me of Dr Jekyll from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Best line; Harmony; (of Angel's leadership)"Good luck! Morale here stinks. Everyone thinks you suck!"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? The Pee-Pee demon is SUCH a yucky concept. Equally Gunn staking his territory is eugghh! Personally I always found lack of sleep the worst torture imaginable.

Kinky dinky: Voyeur Eve spies on naked Angel in the shower. She wonder if Angel needs some 'hands on' gentlemen's time. Harmony dancing! MMMMMMmmmm! Mercedes sure can cut a rug! Spike refers to Harmony as Angel's chippy just as CC did with the Furies. Angel considers Eve's quite lovely dress to be 'banging it out to the cheap seats'. Eve and Angel get it on big time, even with Lorne and Spike still IN THE ROOM! Eve has had sex under the 'great roofie spirit' before (maybe she ran into RJ's brother or dad?)

Captain Subtext; Eve comments that Angel takes a long shower 'for a guy'. Sebassis strokes the PP demon affectionately. Lorne talks about jacuzzi strategy sessions. Fred and Wes start coming together. Gunn stakes his territory on Angel's chair, does this mean he wants to replace him?

Know the face, different character; 5

Parking garages; 8,

Buffy characters on Angel; 16. Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony. POSSIBLY The First Evil

What the fanficcers thought; Not a lot, Eve/Angel actually less popular a pairing than even Connor/Cordy

Questions and observations; Lorne now loves Harmony and vice versa. He refers to Angel as Top Cat. Note Spike is now included in the AI meetings. Harmony now plays the CC role of saying what's true but what no one wants to say. Angel is a hockey fan as is DB. Who's raggedy Anne? They certainly do celebrate Halloween in England although not to the same degree as in America (in fact it's more celebrated in America than anywhere else including Ireland where it originates from). Fred appear to be a violent drunk, good thing she stuck with cannabis. Wes' dancing has got a lot better since She.

Marks out of 10; 7/10 fun, nice to see Lorne get some decent screen time

It's not like this is the first time I've had sex under a mystical influence
SleepTight66610 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
It's not like this is the first time I've had sex under a mystical influence - One of the silliest and most unnecessary episodes of the entire series, it was my least favorite episode not too long ago. However it has grown on me, despite the silliness it's nice to have a feel-good episode around, and there are still enough giggle moments in this one. It's halloween and while everyone is busy working at W&H, 'Lorne' is trying to organize a party but nobody else really seems cares. Eventually he gets his party and it seems to go pretty well, until they all realize that they're doing exactly what 'Lorne' asks them to, the wallflowers aka 'Fred' and 'Wes' are drunk without drinking, 'Spike' is being optimistic, 'Angel' has lots of sex with 'Eve' and 'Gunn' pees all over the place. It's all happening because 'Lorne' got his sleep removed which now has manifested into a Lorne-Hulk. It all ends well when drunk 'Fred' shoots 'Lorne's sleep right back into him. Like I said, the episode is very silly but it has plenty to go around, like 'Harmony's dancing, the Arch Dukes little creature that likes Gunn's peepee and the Fred/Wes elevator scene which cracks up me every time. ANGEL: Look, Lorne, I, I, I have things. I'm busy. I'm brooding. LORNE: Oh, you're watching hockey! ANGEL: Yeah, but my team is losing! (7.0 out of 10)

Demon Feces
limetalhead4 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
While this was one of the more stupid episodes of any season, it was still entertaining and a break from the usual seriousness. Lorne crazy, Wes & Fred drunk, Angel & Eve getting their swerve on, Spike optimistic, Gunn peeing on everything, the Archduke's assistant on the crapper. Seeing Wes & Fred together, even while drunk, you could tell how cute of and what a great couple they make. Spike: "Hey Angel's getting' some. Good on you mate." Angel: "Eve, you stay with me and have more sex." Eve: "Okay." Absolutely classic. Gunn "staking out his territory" by pissing all over the place. Eve though it wasn't due to Lorne, just seeing a demon with horns on the crapper was hilarious. All in all, a little campy and ridiculous at times but still funny.

Halloween Time at Wolfram & Hart
Samuel-Shovel30 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In "Life of the Party", it's time for Wolfram & Hart's annual Halloween bash. Naturally, Lorne is the party organizer and has to cajole the rest of the group into attending. But something about this party is a tad off... Whatever Lorne tells people to do they are forced to do it. It turns out that he had WR&H remove his sleep and has been going non-stop for weeks, a bad move for an empath demon. He's not causing people's destinies and his subconscious has manifest itself in a physical form. It attacks the party and starts killing guests. A confused and distracted gang must stop it all before it's too late.

We don't get too many Lorne-focused episodes, he always seems to be there but off to the side a bit. So it's nice when we get to focus on him, he's a great character! Here we get to see the gang let loose and even develop a bit. Fred confides in Wes her feelings for Knox whilst drunk, an odd move for her considering she knows of his old feelings for her. He gets straight up friend-zoned here. And Gunn and Fred's previous relationship seems to have been completely forgotten by the writers which is slightly annoying.

Even Angel develops a bit here, sleeping with the mysterious Eve, possibly symbolizing him moving past Cordy and onto other things.

Anyways, this is another strong episode to kick off Season 5. I've really enjoyed it all thus far.

The One Where Lorne Accidentally Tells People To Do Things, And Then They Do It...
taylorkingston27 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really do love this episode. It's so inventive.

In this episode, Lorne is throwing the annual Halloween party, and he has to do a good job at it. At the beginning, we see him pretending to be happy and doing what he normally does, and then when he goes into his office, we see another Lorne in the mirror taunting him. We have no idea why. We later find out that Lorne has had his sleep removed and hasn't been to sleep in over a month. Later, during the party, Wesley and Fred are drunk but haven't drunk enough to be drunk, Gunn is peeing all over the office, Spike is super happy and Angel and Eve are sleeping together. Why, you might ask. Because Lorne told them too. Wesley and Fred weren't having a good time and Lorne told them that being drunk will help. Gunn was told to mark his territory, so he is, just like a dog. Spike was told to be positive, and Eve and Angel were told to get a room. Lorne didn't mean for this to happen, he didn't know he was making it happen. We find out that when empath demons don't sleep for long periods of time, they can start to control the the destinies of people around them. He eventually gets his sleep put back in.

Overall, I really love this episode and I give it a 10 out of 10.
