Spike & Angel Back Together
Samuel-Shovel18 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In "Just Rewards" Spike returns to the world in the form of a ghost. Unable to leave LA's city limits, he begins haunting Angel. Angel must deal with a former client angry they are no longer providing him with bodies. The wizard was using them to transfer demon's into human bodies. The wizard offers to give Spike Angel's body if he lures Angel into a trap. Spike ends up double-crossing the wizard and helping Angel defeat and kill him. Spike asks Fred to help him end his ghostly torment.

In my review of the season opener, I complained a bit about Spike's quick reintroduction into the Buffy-verse after his demise in BtVS's series finale. After watching the follow up episode however, I've changed my tune. He's a welcome addition to the Angel crew. They needed some new blood, especially with Connor and Cordy's absence. Harmony's inclusion is nice but she's there almost solely for comedic relief. Spike gives some tension to the group and another asset alongside Angel. We'll see how long it takes Fred to make Spike corporeal.

I thought he wasn't solid
limetalhead3 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
What I always wondered is if Spike wasn't corporeal, then how was he able to sit in Angel's chair with his feet on the desk and sit in Angel's car? If he wasn't solid, then he shouldn't be able to climb steps or ride an elevator. Seeing as he jumped right through Angel and stuck out of his desk, how was this possible? I can understand how he can walk on the main floor being that was where he was resurrected but the rest just never made any sense. And what about him trying to leave town? Yet again, we see another improbable feat. Spike in this episode and all the rest until he becomes corporeal were questions I always wanted to ask Joss Whedon about.

Spangel galore!

JUST REWARDS

The Good; I know it's sick but always laugh out loud at Spike looking at 'bucket-o-lawyer' and telling Gunn and Wes "Your man Novak, he's been, how would you put it? Downsized!". Such an unpleasant storyline yet really it's quite immaterial as this ep really is about Spike and Angel rather than some necromancer.

The Bad; You can see the dark haired girl in the corpse showroom move slightly when she's standing behind Spike.

Best line; Spike (looking around Angel's plush digs)"If a certain Slayer could see you now!"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Harmony telling Spike he can't be mean to her anymore because they're no longer dating. Oh that girl! Plus 'bucket-o-lawyer' (three buckets actually).

Kinky dinky: Harmony is revolted by the thought of Spuffy "Slayer loving freak!". Fred thinks Spike is hot. The demon states that he considered other sorts of human bodies to inhabit but eventually he went with pretty as everybody does (anyone else think he sounds like Clem?). Spike suggests the villain is into necrophilia. Spike says he'd like to 'have a go' at Fred and that she looks like a 'goer'.

Captain Subtext; Spike refers to Angel as poncey and beefcake. Lorne says he sees Depp and Bloom for the Angel and Spike roles but comments he sees them a lot. His remark 'I could sell that movie in a heartbeat' may be a hint at an Angel movie. Angel is jealous that Spike hooked up with his sexy, petite blonde ex. Spike points out that Angel now has HIS sexy petite blonde ex working as his secretary. Also note that when the Groxlar beast attacks Spike goes to help Angel.

Spike refers to himself as Angel's 'date' and says that forehead boy has a 'wide spotty ass'. How would he know? Later on in the season Spike refers to the intimate moment Spike and Angel share together much to the delight of Spanglers everywhere. BUT the moment in question could very well be the scene here where Spike is possessing Hainsly who has his fingers lodged inside Angel?

Know the face, different character; 5

Parking garages; where Spike meets Angel 8,

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony. POSSIBLY The First Evil

Questions and observations; Gunn smokes cigars? We've never seen him do it before and do we ever see him do it again? Note in the teaser you can just see Harmony's hand appear around the doorframe just before we cut to Sunnydale. The last time we'll really see Buffy proper in the Buffyverse. Love the flashback to Spike's going out in a blaze of glory. How come Gunn has heard of Spike but Fred hasn't? Angel is still in touch with Buffy who's now in Europe. Wes seems to have been informed of recent events but not the others? But even he hasn't been told of Spike's soul, everyone at AI keeps secrets. The Littlelest Vampire is mentioned, either a ref to The Little Vampire or The Littlelest Hobo.

So how does the medallion get to Angel? We know it's Lindsey but how does he know about it? Eve or is he maybe in league with Lilah? Angel knows a lot more about Spike than he rightfully should. He's jealous that Spike not only got to have more, ahem, intimate time with Buffy than he did but also that when Spike got his soul he was able to recover from the guilt in a matter of months whilst Angel tortured himself for over a century. Of course this was partly because Spike had help from Buffy and in some ways the rest of the Scoobies but also because he deliberately went out to re-acquire his soul and to be the champion Buffy wanted, he had purpose. And he had 3 years without killing before due to his chip, living more and more in the human world, forced to socialise with them and learning from the experience.

Marks out of 10; 7/10

Watching Spike and Angel...My favorite past time
katierose2954 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode because it center's around Spike and Angel's reluctant bond. Going back to season two of BTVS, the two of them have had an interesting relationship. They've each had opportunities and reasons to kill each other, but they just can't. They're strangely alike and yet completely different. They have a bickering sibling rivalry, that just cracks me up, and then they can be so heartbreaking together. They share a past as evil vampires, which binds them in ways no one else can really understand. They see all the other's faults, but when it really comes down to a fight, they still trust each other to do what's right. Then there's their duel status as vampires with souls, which causes mutual jealousy and, at the same time, allows them to talk to each other in ways that they can't with other people. Angel and Spike don't always like each other, but they do love each other. They're family. "Just Rewards" sets up their relationship, which will grow over the course of the season. I highly recommend it.

"Just Rewards" revolves around Spike coming back to unlife as a vampire ghost. He pops out of that pendant thing and lands right in the middle of Angel's new office. Neither Vampire Champion is thrilled to see the other. Spike, as usual, blames Angel for all of his problems. He want to be corporeal again, get out of LA and talk to Buffy, not necessarily in that order. Angel just wants Spike gone. Spike brings up a lot of unresolved feelings in Angel, about Buffy, his soul, the Shanshu Prophesy, etc... Also, Spike is really good at getting under Angel's skin with his wisecracks and way too insightful comments. Unfortunately for both of them, Wes and Fred explain that Spike is linked to the pendant and can't go anywhere unless they destroy it. And if it's destroyed than Spike will die for real. Angel is reluctant to do that.

Meanwhile, Wolfram and Hart is dealing with a necromancing client who's causing all sorts of trouble. After Angel freezes all the guys' assets, the necromancer decides to get even. He can't kill Angel outright or the Senior Partners might come after him, but he can control the dead, putting demons into new bodies. He offers Spike a deal: If he'll help the necromancer trap Angel, Spike can have Angel's nice corporeal body. Spike agrees. Then he double-crosses the necromancer. Spike & Angel come up with a plan of their own. (Although, I'm never clear on how much of the plan Spike left for a surprise. It seems kinna reckless) Anyway, Spike takes over the necromancer's body long enough for Angel to kill him. Back at Wolfram & Hart, Spike goes to Fred and admits that he's scared. He's fading and slipping into hell. He asks for her help.

There are some great parts to this episode. I love the rest of Team Angel finding out that Spike saved the world and has a soul now. Angel is so cute and pouty. "Buffy did most of the work." And it's interesting that Spike's the one who can see Wolfram & Hart for what it really is. He tries to reason with Angel, saying that fighting in the belly of beast will just get Team Angel digested and that Angel's not in control of the situation. Angel doesn't listen, but Spike's got a real good point. He can always see things pretty clearly and he knows that Angel's in over his head. And I like Gunn's trying to guide Angel through their new white collar approach to fighting evil, so they call the IRS on the bad guy. Plus, the Gunn Voodoo doll is just hilarious. Also, I always start laughing when Spike and Angel go to visit the necromancer. Angel introduces himself and says that he's from Wolfram and Hart. Everyone looks over at Spike who smiles and says, "I'm his date." I especially like the last scene with Fred, as Spike tries to explain that he's slipping into hell and doesn't know how to stop it. "Help me?" he asks, quietly and my heart just breaks.

One of the small parts of the episode I love is Spike, holding his coat tightly, as he follows Angel around. Angel thinks that Spike's just trying to annoy him, and --sure-- that's part of it. But, on a deeper level, I think that Spike is confused and instinctively turning Angel to for some sort of protection. Angel/Angelus trained Spike. They were vampire buddies for decades. Spike's always seen Angel as the strongest. The leader. So when he's suddenly a ghost and scared about it, Angel is the one "person" he trusts to help. And when Spike actually does try to leave LA, Angel is clearly worried about him and feels guilty. I think it's just a nice little indication of how much they --reluctantly-- mean to each other. And their plan would never have worked if they didn't trust each other. Spike could have taken over Angel's body, but he didn't. And Angel could have smashed that amulet, but he didn't. Instead, they worked together, beat the bad guy, and only got in --Oh...-- 40 or so fights. Go team!

On the down side, I think it's wrong that they edited the scene of BTVS season seven's "Chosen." They cut out the part where Buffy tells Spike that she loves him, which sort of undermines their relationship. Also, is Spike really the second worst vampire of all time? What about Darla?

My favorite part of the episode: Spike pretending to be a Black Hat. He tells Angel that, once he takes over Angel's identity, he'll have "Everything, everyONE, I deserve." Just the way he stresses the word "everyone" brings up their whole past with Buffy without ever saying her name. It's just really well done.

The One With The Ghost...
taylorkingston27 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is such a great episode.

This episode starts with Spike back in the Hellmouth, from the Series Finale of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. To catch up, non-Buffy watching viewers. The Spike is unleashed from the amulet. Everyone is like, "what's going on?" "Who are you?" and stuff like that. We find out that Spike is ghost, after he walks through Angel's desk, when he was trying to fight him. I love the little moments when Spike's all concerned about Buffy and wanting to see her. So cute. We find out that he can't leave the city, he keeps getting pulled back to Wolfram and Hart. I love how shocked everyone was when they found out that Spike saved the world and that he had a soul. Little details that Angel left out, and everyones like "why didn't you tell us that?" So good.

Overall, I love this episode and I give it a 10 out of 10.

I eat the dead for breakfast son and you're just another plate of bacon and eggs
SleepTight66620 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I eat the dead for breakfast son and you're just another plate of bacon and eggs - Oh, ho-ray. Illigally blonde is back. ANGEL is to me one of the most perfect shows ever made, I love the characters, story lines and I consider most of the episodes to be absolutely brilliant, but I cannot love all 110 episodes equally, this is one of those episodes that I wouldn't mind skipping. It's mostly about 'Spike' b!tchin' and moaning, only even more than usually. Poor 'Angel', having blonde casper hunting him is far worse than hell. Also 'Harmony' shows her first signs of suckness, at least 'Spike' has a quarter of a brain, I would be shocked if 'Harmony' has a brain at all. But the episode also had some good moments, I liked 'Hainsley' with his House of Wax-ish home and of course 'Angel' killing the butler with a spoon. But when the most exciting scene of the episode is a flashback of Buffy's series finale, you know it can't be too good. The episode is mostly an average bunch which bottoms my bottom 3. FRED: I'm detecting brain activity. ANGEL: On Spike? That is weird.
