Spike comes to town
katierose29514 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
"In the Dark" corresponds with the BTVS episode "The Harsh Light of Day." In that episode, Spike finds the ring of Amara buried under Sunnydale. He and Buffy fight and she takes the ring from him. Oz then agrees to drive the ring to LA for Angel. It would probably help to see "The Harsh Light of Day," before "In the Dark," but it isn't completely necessary. You can follow along easily enough. "In the Dark" is an important episode. It reunites Spike and Angel, which is always fun. And it establishes Angel's real quest for redemption. He wants forgiveness, but he wants to earn it for himself. If you're watching on DVD, you shouldn't skip this episode.

"In the Dark" revolves around the ring of Amara. Basically, it's a magical ring that makes any vampire who wears it "unkillable." Oz brings it to town for Angel. Spike dug up the ring in Sunnydale and Buffy took it from him. Unfortunately, Spike wants the ring back. He comes LA looking for it. Angel knows that Spike will show up and hides the ring. Sure enough, Spike attacks Angel. In fact, in pretty short order, he's kidnapped his grandsire. Never one for the pre- show and easily bored with torture, he hires another vampire to try and make Angel talk. The torture demon is an expert at inflicting pain and has a thing for killing kids. Angel refuses to say where the ring is and Spike soon becomes frustrated. He heads to Angel's house and threatens Doyle and Cordy, telling them to get him the ring or he'll kill Angel.

Cordy and Doyle find the ring and bring it to Spike. But they have a plan. Just as Spike is about to get it, Oz drives his van right into the building. Cordy, Doyle and Angel escape. The torture demon steals the ring and Spike, annoyed with all of them, heads back to Sunnydale. The torture demon goes to the beach, looking for children to eat. Angel follows him there. He and the torture demon fight. Angel gets the ring and kills him. But Angel refuses to keep the ring. He says that wearing it is a false redemption and that he wants to help all the people who live in the dark. He destroys the ring.

There are some really great parts to this episode. I love Spike. And I REALLY love episodes where Spike and Angel are interacting. They're just so funny together. You just have to laugh as they fight, Angel complaining that Spike never makes plans and Spike taking a time-out to compliment Cordelia, "You look smashing. Have you lost weight?" Also, I like Spike kidnapping Angel. He just becomes more and more frustrated with his grandsire. Angel won't tell him where the ring is and the torture demon keeps playing Chopin, which Spike can't stand. Spike is not a patient guy. His shouting and pacing and taunts about Buffy are all pretty entertaining. I also enjoy Oz's reunion with Angel and Cordy. Cordy insists that they have so much to catch up on. But, she's pretty much done hearing about Sunnydale within 4 seconds. And Angel, ever the extrovert, greets Oz with a simple "Oz." Finally, I like the scene of Angel on the beach. He's so happy to be standing in the sun that you just have to smile.

I think that a lot of this episode ties into "Angel" season five. There's Spike and Angel's complicated love/hate sibling rivalry. The two of them do horrible things to each other, they fight and bicker and sleep with each others girlfriends. But, underneath it all, they're family. Angel never even brings up Spike torturing him. And, by season five, Spike fights on Angel's side, even when he doesn't agree with his grand-sire. The two of them are pretty much stuck with each other for the rest of their un-lives. Also, there's the scene with Cordy and the arrows. She threatens Spike with a crossbow and he tells her to go ahead and fire. He'll kill her with the arrows. It's the basically the same thing that Angelus says in a flashback in the season five episode "The Girl in Question." I think you could make an interesting argument that Spike's "tough guy" talk is just paraphrased from his grandsire. Angelus was his mentor and the strongest vampire, so Spike has spent the past 100+ years trying to act like him. Finally, there's the ring. Angel won't wear it because he thinks it will make him forget the ordinary battles that need to be fought. All the people who live in the dark, who need his help. By season five, Angel has (metaphorically) put on the ring. He's distanced himself from his mission and has to struggle to find himself again.

On the down side, how did Angel and Doyle know the ring of Amara by sight? In "The Harsh Light of Day" Spike had no idea what it looked like and he was the one who did all the research to find the ring. Also, how did Angel know where to find that torture vamp? There are a lot of spots in LA that have kids. Why did Angel automatically try that pier? Finally, did Angel HAVE to smash that ring? Couldn't he just not wear it? Maybe he could have used it later.

My favorite part of the episode: Spike standing on the roof top and watching Angel speak with a woman he's just saved. Spike is supplying his own dialog for both of them, switching his voice back and forth as he mocks Angel's heroics and hair. "To the Angel-mobile!" It's probably one of the funniest scenes of the season.

A visit from Sunnydale
ossie854 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Oz, in his Oz way, gives a vampire immortality Ring to Angel, as a gift from Buffy. Spike comes after the ring, and kidnaps Angel to get it. But Spike has also enlisted a kid eating vampire who loves to torture. What could possibly go wrong?

Why It's So Good - I'm a sucker for crossovers and this continuing from the Buffy episode 'The Harsh Light of Day' is very satisfying. James Marsters as always a delight.

Watch Out For - The sun beaming down on Spike.

Quote - "I don't know about you, but I had a nice day. You know, except for the bulk of it while I was nearly tortured to death." - Angel.

Spike: I really hope they kill each other.

Warning: Spoilers
In the Dark is about Oz delivering the Ring of Amara to Angel, which in turn brings Spike who wants said ring.

A light humored episode, with a flimsy plot and rescue scenario. Angel's reason to destroy the ring's a valid one and it's certainly a worthwhile cause. It's just a bit silly, I mean Angel's never going to give the ring to him and the lead character isn't going to die and everything to do with Oz's overdone and ridiculous. I like Doyle's facial reactions to Angel's noble act. Doyle's a moral guy, but he has been living in a way where he will take any angle he can get and Angel's throwing away the gift of a lifetime, a bit of a self reflecting moment.

The One Where Spike Comes Over...
taylorkingston27 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this episode. It is one of my all-time favorites.

This is first spin off between Angel and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. There are only a handful, and thankfully, this one is awesome. In this episode, Spike comes to Los Angeles, after trying to get the Gem Of Amara, back in Sunnydale. The ring empowers the wearer to be invincible. So for a vampire, they can go in sunlight, stakes don't do nothing, and holy water, a thing of the past. So you can understand why Spike wants it so bad. Oz brought the ring to Angel, and Spike followed all the way. He eventually kidnaps and tries to torture Angel into telling him where it is. Long story short, Spike doesn't get the ring, and returns home to Sunnydale.

Overall, I love this episode, it's fantastic and I give it a 10 out of 10.

Not as awesome as the first two episodes
nicofreezer23 May 2022
I dont enjoy so much the spike episodes, every time he was on Buffy or now in Angel, Spike is a boring Bad guy, trying to be funny but cant, he is flat as a Bad guy, no charisma, I mean he's fine but these shows can create such better villain that its a shame to always bring back spike, just kill him.

This episode is far far away from the Amazing first two episode , still I had a good time 7.7/10.

I refuse to be wooed just because Spike is in this episode...

Warning: Spoilers
To be honest this episode is pretty rubbish, even with Spike in it. Apart from anything else Spike doesn't do anything! He waltzes in and demands some stupid ring, which should never have been allowed to have exists in the Buffyverse anyway as it's such a poor plot device, and then, for some bizarre reason hires someone to torture Angel for him for the information, rather than do it himself. How out of character! The fact that the torturer man even exists is simply a plot device so that someone can steal the ring and create a finale. Oz is also totally underused; he does little to further the plot at all and simply stands around as if to say "look at me. I'm also in Buffy. Isn't that cool. This is totally a crossover!" To make things even more ridiculous when the torture man steals the ring Angel and the gang know exactly where to find him; they head straight for a random pier and there he just happens to be. Well isn't that fortunate! My favourite moment of the episode. Spike says "to use a phrase I learnt in Sunnydale: DUH!"

Spike and Oz, brilliant!

Warning: Spoilers
In the dark

The Good; Spike mocking Angel is excellent, lovely to see Oz and a great rescue and final battle at the pier. Nice end coda too. The Cordy/Oz/Angel scenes are hysterical, as Willow observes both she and Buffy know the love of 2 taciturn men.

The Bad; Very little, strong ep. Boy Spike is dumb but funnily so. Everyone at the pier seems to take the 2 guys jumping off the end on fire very calmly.

Best line: Doyle (to Angel); "Long time between sunsets huh?"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Well, Angel get's tortured to nearly death for the majority of the episode. Spike also hints that Marcus has an interest in the kids beyond just eating them. Reputedly this is the ep that got the Angel season 1 DVD box-set an 18 rating in the UK. I don't disagree but what makes this worse than 'Hellbound' which only got a 15 rating?

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; yep, that makes 2

Inverting the Hollywood cliché; rather than play the unbreakable tough guy Angel admits that with a little more torture he'd have told Marcus everything. Cordy notes the Gem isn't in the freezer or toilet tank as it would be in the movies.

In disguise; no DB get's his shirt off; no but we get some torso action, Marcus commenting he has 'little external damage'.

Fang Gang in bondage: yep, Angel for virtually the whole ep Cordy: 5 Angel: 5 Wes: 1

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 6 Angel: 6 Wes: 1

Kills: Cordy: none this ep. 3 vamps, ½ a demon from her time in Sunnydale Angel: Another vamp for Angel. So that gives Angel 8 vamps, 2 demons, 1 human.

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 1 Angel: 1

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 1 Angel: 3

Characters killed: only Marcus 9;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 3, Angel, Doyle and Cordy

Angel Investigations shot: no Angel: 4,

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 1? Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky: Spike refers to Buffy as 'slutty the vampire slayer' and teases Angel over Buffy's affair with Parker.

Captain Subtext; Spike's speech on Angel is full of homophobia. He also asks if Angel and Marcus would like to be alone when running his hands over Angel's naked torso. Spike comments that Buffy is 'cute when she's hurting', you wonder did he always have a thing for her? Such a shame we never get to meet Doyle's wonderfully named friend 'Frankie Tripod'.

Buffy characters appearing in Angel; (unless someone can correct me no original Angel character ever appears on Buffy?) 4; Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike

Questions and observations; Why does Angel grab his neck when Marcus puts the chain around it? Surely he doesn't breathe? Marcus wears glasses which presumably like Dalton in Buffy are for sentimental reasons. Doyle has read Angela's Ashes and it reduces him to tears (the novel focuses on the shiftless father so it may appeal to Doyle who never knew his). Angel once again beats his way to what he wants, without Buffy's influence he tends to be a lot more brutal. It's a great performance from Kevin West who is a very familiar face on TV (although I thought he was in Scrubs and Ally McBeal but he isn't, that's Robert Clendenin another actor with a similar look). Marcus wears a Bond style Nehru jacket. Angel knows Doyle's mother. This is Angel investigations first walk-in client and her problem for once is just a very human jerk ex-boyfriend rather than anything supernatural. OK so the ring makes vamps unkillable, even if you cut their heads' off?

I don't know about you but I had a nice day. You know, except for the bulk of it where I was nearly tortured to death

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know about you but I had a nice day. You know, except for the bulk of it where I was nearly tortured to death - Believe it or not, this is my least favorite episode of the first season. It's the show's first crossover but the problem is, I simply did not care about the whole 'ring of amarra' storyline but at least I liked the ANGEL episode better than the BtVs one. What mostly hurts this episode for me is 'Spike', I think that I would enjoy his scenes better with the volume off, but even so, his hair would still annoy me. My favorite 'Spike' scene during the episode has to be when his hair caught on fire, too bad it was only his hair though. Another thing that didn't really get to me was 'Marcus', a vampire that tortured 'Angel' through the biggest part of this episode, the torture scenes were pretty irritating, especially thanks to that bleeping Mozart music. But the episode also had plenty to give like the 'Doyle' and 'Cordelia' chemistry was still fabulous, 'Angel' wearing the ring and being able to enjoy the sunlight for a while and of course 'Oz' paying a visit, it's a shame he only got a few scenes because, damn, he fits perfectly with the rest of the cast. Other than that, I find this episode to be quite forgettable, the B storyline about a girl having trouble with her boyfriend doesn't manage to impress me either. Nice ending though, any scene where both 'Angel' and 'Doyle' share a few words is pure gold. Spike: She is cute when she's hurting, isn't she? ANGEL: She's cuter when she's kicking your ass.
