A Gunn episode
katierose29521 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is mainly important because of Gunn and Darla. He's becoming a real part of Angel Investigation and she's started her plan to drive Angel insane. The two of them are an important part of the show and "First Impressions" does establish some new things about their motivations and characters. This isn't my favorite episode, but it does have some cool parts to it. If you're watching the season on DVD, you shouldn't skip "First Impressions."

"First Impressions" revolves around Gunn. He's spending more and more time fighting along side the Angel Inc. gang. Now, he wants Angel to help him stop a demon who's been terrorizing Gunn's neighborhood. Angel agrees, of course, but he's having some problems of his own. He's having trouble with his dreams. He's sleeping all the time, but not feeling rested. Plus, he keeps dreaming of Darla. He's not sure what's going on. Little does Angel know that Darla is back from the dead, and she's been sneaking into the Hyperion and plying him with a magical sleeping powder.

Cordy has a vision where she sees Gunn in danger. Leaving messages for Wes and Angel, Cordelia heads off in Angel's car, determined to help Gunn on her own. Gunn is far from impressed with her heroics and tries to get rid of her. Unfortunately, Angel's car is stolen and Cordy is desperate to get it back. Gunn has to help her track it down. Along the way, they fight some vampires and confront that demon who's been moving into Gunn's neighborhood. Wes and Angel arrive in time to help with the fighting and the demon is defeated. Cordy realizes that her vision was really about Gunn's death wish attitude. He's going to get killed unless he starts taking better care of himself. She promises to look after Gunn from now on.

There are some good parts to this episode. The fight with the demons in the parking garage is pretty fun. Cordy's lamenting her ruined outfit, Wes' beeper gets broken, Angel's worn out from Darla's dream scheme and Gunn is angry at all of them. Somehow they go from battling vampires to discussing Denzel Washington's performance in "Malcolm X." It's just really cool. And I love Angel in this episode. He's so adorable in his scenes with Darla and his pouty annoyance over riding on Wes's motorcycle is hilarious. Angel is so embarrassed that he has to wear the pink "lady's" helmet, that you just have to smile. (He'll have a similarly frustrating experience with a Vespa and Spike in season five's "The Girl in Question.") Also, I really enjoy Cordy in this episode. From talking to Dennis, to tripping all over her words with Gunn's friends at that party, to macing the huge demon... She's great. And I really like that Alanna's death was brought up again. Gunn's sister was such a big part of his motivations and it's good that the show remembered her. Finally, I really like that David back for one last scene. I think he's cute.

On the down side, I think that this episode is trying out the possibility of a Gunn and Cordy pairing. It puts them together, but nothing really comes of it. Cordy and Gunn really don't share a lot of one-on-one scenes together after this, which is sort of a shame.

My favorite part of the episode: Angel and Darla "moon-bathing" together in his dream.

Hmm, I could just eat you up

Warning: Spoilers
Hmm, I could just eat you up - 'Gunn' episodes have never been exactly popular, usually their problem is that the secondary storyline is more interesting than the 'Gunn' storyline. I do however like the 'Gunn' character, in the early years anyway, but I think that he works far better as a background character than when it's actually about him, he simply doesn't have a lot of interesting story lines to offer. In this episode 'Cordy' has a vision of 'Gunn' fighting for his life and decides to go and save 'Gunn' by herself, unlike many fans I think they do have good chemistry, exactly because they simply don't get each other. I also loved the comedy in this episode like - 'So, where's your car' but most notable were the Wesley/Angel scenes, especially when 'Angel' had to wear the ladies helmet - 'Hop on gorgeous'. But what mainly makes this episode work for me are 'Angel's sex dreams, they are far more sexual than ANGEL has ever been before, especially at the end when it's revealed that they aren't 'just' dreams and 'Darla' has been on top of him all that time. The episode is definitely memorable, entertaining and it develops both characters and story lines, still it's not perfect, the main villain of the episode for instance didn't work at all. But other than that, a must-see 'Gunn' episode even if it's mostly for 'Angel's dreams. Too bad that this was 'David Nabbit's last episode though, I think his character had potential. CORDELIA: Paging Mr. Rationalization. GUNN: Paging Ms. "About to be thrown out of a moving vehicle". (8.5 out of 10)

Cordelia: Ask Joey, and his cracked skull just how 'weak ass' it is.

Warning: Spoilers
First Impressions is about Cordy getting a vision of Gunn's impending doom and Darla invading Angel's sleep.

So the Gunn story-line here's wack! The villain's this human that transforms into a much bigger demon. The type of which we never see the likes of again. In the third season, we see a regular demon that transform into a gigantic one, but the look's still similar. Anyway, the fact that we never see it again isn't the problem, it's that he's meeting with Gunn and sitting idly by while his vamp followers are killed off, then more of his vamps randomly attack at a party, then they catch Gunn at the other lot in which Angel happens to show up just in time to save them. All this to kill Gunn, why? It's so stupid. The highlights all involve exchanges with Cordy and some excellent music.

Just gets annoying...
carterkev20 November 2021
I was enjoying Angel it was clever and entertaining. But this Gunn character is just annoying with an attitude. There is no need for this racist and ignorant way of doing things all the time, he is rude, big headed and insulting. I think he is going to ruin the rest of the series for me. Why is there any need for this kind of attitude and insulting behaviour street wise or not.

Gunn is going to be the death of a promising series
davebartle26 March 2022
Obviously, I have come to Angel late but my partner and I have been really enjoying it... until this episode. Did the writers try to make the most annoying character ever? It reminds me of the Simpsons episode with Poochy the Wonderdog, except that character was deliberately written that way.

Terrible!
Joxerlives23 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Good; Not much, this has a good chance of being the worst Angel ep ever. Some eps of Charmed were better than this, even the one's without Shannen Doherty (or Charisma Carpenter).

The Bad; The demon and the whole 'Gunn in trouble' bit is very stupid.

Best line: "NOW!" all in the delivery

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Can't help but wince when Veronica get's a neck full of glass. Cordy's right though, to pull it out would kill her. The whimpering from Angelus and Darla's victims is horrible.

Apocalypses: 4

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; 16,

In disguise; 4

DB get's his shirt off; yep, twice so that makes 9

Cordy's tattoo;3

Cheap Angel; 4

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 8 Wes: 2

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 9 Angel: 11 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1

Kills: Cordy: 2 vamps for Cordy so 5 vamps, 1½ demons Angel; 1 demon and 1 vamp so 17 vamps, 18 and 1/2 demons, 3 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 1/2 a demon Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; one more vamp so 5 in all.

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 6

Characters killed: 25

Recurring characters killed; 4;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 3, Angel and Cordy and Wes

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 8,

Packing heat; Wes; 2 Doyle; 1 Angel; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky: All the Darla/Angel stuff is just excellent. Wes uses the very British insult 'Wanker'. Once again Cordy appears to be turned on by money, maybe that 'prostitute' remark wasn't so far of the mark as she also says she could be a 'working girl' if she wanted to. She also states that when it comes to sex women see more levels than men.

Captain Subtext; Semi-naked Angel on top of Wes! Angel objects to wearing 'The girl's helmet'. Wes doesn't help by telling him 'Hop on gorgeous'

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 4,

Guantanamo Bay; Gunn beats his way to the truth so ruthlessly even Angel steps in to stop him.

Buffy characters on Angel; 11 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla

Questions and observations; Angel is a fan of Denzel Washington which is weird as he claimed to not even have a TV and was living like a tramp during his most successful movies?

Marks out of 10; 3/10, VERY weak ep, saved largely by the Darla/Angel stuff and the motorcycle humour.
