Angel signs on as an actress's bodyguard
katierose29520 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
"Eternity" is actually a fun episode. It doesn't add a lot to the over all story arc, but it does have some nice scenes between the characters. Angelus is always lurking beneath the surface of Angel's normal, sweet personality. If he loses his soul or slips out of control, Angelus will come out again and destroy everything that Angel loves. Angelus is like Angel's evil twin or alternate personality and "Eternity" reinforces the continuing threat he represents to Angel's quest for redemption. Angelus is also a danger to Wes and Cordy, who will be the first ones he goes after if he gets free. They're Angel's link to humanity and the people he's closest, too. Their faith in Angel has to be so deep to risk him turning evil and killing them. They trust Angel and it's really moving to see them continue to love him after this episode. Anyway, if you're watching on DVD, you should probably see this episode.

"Eternity" revolves around Angel hiring on to protect an actress named Rebecca. She's being stalked by some weird guy and she thinks that her life may be in danger. Rebecca is famous and she's up for a big new part. Cordy is thrilled to meet her. Angel likes her too, especially when Rebecca learns that he's a vampire and she isn't afraid. When it turns out that the stalking was a publicity stunt set up by her agent, Rebecca is upset. But, when she looses out on her part because she's too "mature for the role," she's even MORE upset. She comes up with a plan to never age... She'll become a vampire. Rebecca drugs Angel with "happy" pills and he becomes Angelus again. Sort of. See, he only becomes Angelus when he experiences real, perfect happiness and the drugs just produce fake happiness. It'll wear off. He terrorizes Wes, Cordy and Rebecca for a while. Then Wes and Cordy trap him in the elevator shaft. Rebecca runs off, never to be heard from again. Angel recovers and apologizes for going evil. Wes and Cordy forgive Angel for trying to kill them.

There are some good parts to this episode. I really like Cordy's excitement over getting a picture of her elbow in the paper, while Angel pouts that he isn't mentioned. It's pretty cute. And I enjoy Angel at the movie premiere. I haven't seen him in a suit since he went to the prom with Buffy. He looks adorable with his hair all slicked down. Also, it's typical that he's never seen Rebecca's show. Spike's right. Angel needs to have more fun. Mostly, though, I like this episode because it has Angelus. Granted it's not REALLY Angelus, but it still makes for a good time. The 5 minutes or so where he's terrorizing Rebecca, Wes and Cordy are just really fun. I love watching Angelus. I feel bad for Angel at the end, all tied to the bed. He's really worried that Wes and Cordy won't forgive him. They do of course, but that doesn't mean that they aren't going to make him pay a little bit. He studies Cordy for a beat and realizes, "You're not going to untie me, are you?" Cordelia's dismissive, "Pfffff..." as she walks away just says it all.

On the down side, I fell bad for the poor stuntman. He got hired to terrorize Rebecca as a publicity stunt and he wound up in jail. Kinna unfair.

My favorite part of the episode: Cordelia's play. Not only is her over-acting and forgetting of lines hilarious, but she's staring in Ibsen's "A Doll's House." I assume that the show picked that play because the characters in "A Doll's House" are playing roles in their lives, much like Rebecca is in "Eternity." Which is kind of cool. Plus, "Angelus'" mocking Cordelia's performance is down right hysterical. "There wasn't a dry eye in the house... Everybody was laughing too hard."

Here's a thought. Maybe you can get Raven here to coach you, then you'd actually suck

Warning: Spoilers
Here's a thought. Maybe you can get Raven here to coach you, then you'd actually suck - This episode was my most hated episode when I bought the DVD's, I found the entire storyline of 'Angel' protecting a famous actress a little stooopid. After a couple of rewatchings I finally understood why Joss Whedon loves it. The dialog is very impressive and I always love it when the whole vampire subject is well used. I also feel a strong connection between 'Angel' and 'Rebecca', I don't know how to explain it but it was a very passionate chemistry. My favorite scene was obviously when 'Angel' turns into 'Angelus', truly one of the best scenes of the show, also when he mocked 'Wesley' and 'Cordy' but they fought back and defeated him. I wish the first season had more episodes like these, with that intense feeling and use of 'Angelus', even though it was only an illusion. ANGELUS: In all my years, I've never killed a famous person before. But with no witnesses, who's gonna believe me? Maybe we can take a picture. I know! We do it like we did back in the day. I'll keep your head on a stick as proof. REBECCA: My head on a stick? ANGELUS: Well... okay. pike. REBECCA: You re just trying to scare me. ANGELUS: Is it working? (9.5 out of 10)

ETERNITY

The Good; Nice central concept, lovely to see Oliver again and the scenes with him and Rebecca and Angel and Rebecca are also good. Tamara Gorski is very good as she also was in Hercules although her Irish accent is just as bad as DBs.

The Bad; The explanation that the drugs effects are only temporary is stupid, it's not like the 'happy' Buffy gave Angel lasted for weeks (or if it did I'm doing it wrong?) In season 4 when they need to bring Angelus out why not just give him some of this? Why does Angelus cut the phones, who are they going to call?

Best line: Rebecca (after Angel tells her he doesn't kill any more) "There's a support group for everything in this town"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Angel(us)? spraying the blood over Rebecca

Apocalypses: 4 Cordy tells Rebecca that Angel saved the world but he also points out he tried to destroy it

Angel Clichés

Damsel in distress; 15,

Inverting the Hollywood cliché; Angel tries to act casual about saving Rebecca but you can see he's miffed when the papers don't mention him.

In disguise; 3

DB get's his shirt off; yep, after Rebecca spills her drink on it 5

Cordy's tattoo;3

Cheap Angel; 2

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy chains the boss to the bed again Cordy: 5 Angel: 7 Wes: 1

Fang gang knocked out: Wes and Angel(us) Cordy: 8 Angel: 10 Wes: 3 Doyle; 1

Kills: Cordy: 3 vamps, 1½ demons Angel: 11 vamps, 6 and 1/2 demons, 2 humans. Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 1/2 a demon

Fang Gang go evil: Angel and how! Cordy: 2 Angel: 2

Alternate Fang Gang: Angelus Cordy: 2 Angel: 6

Characters killed: 25

Recurring characters killed; 2;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 3, Angel and Cordy and Wes

Angel Investigations shot: just blanks this week Angel: 7,

Packing heat; Wes; 2 Doyle; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky: Cordy calls Rebecca a slut. How long did she know Wilson for before jumping into bed with him and his Hackslaw beast?

Captain Subtext; Cordy says she'd have picketed the studio but lacked 'sensible shoes' (interesting considering the furore surrounding Angel's cancellation). Angel says that Ernest Borgnine is a 'skilled lover'?

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 4,

Buffy characters on Angel; 6; Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes

Questions and observations; Can't quite imagine Doyle and Angel at an Ibsen play? Wes and Angel seem much more at home. Wes' remark of ET meaning Emma Thompson is SOOO him. Angel thinks Frank Langella is the best Dracula (did he ever meet the real deal? Langella doesn't physically resemble him). Wonder what he'd have made of his Oscar nominated turn in Frost vs Nixon? Angelus says he never killed a famous person which is reassuring.

Marks out of 10; 8/10 good ep, nice character development and a little to say about Hollywood

Stay tuned, hurricane Faith is on her way!

And I thought I knew eternity.
bombersflyup30 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Eternity is about a television actress being stalked and her career on the slide, Angel steps in to help.

An absolutely engaging and wonderful episode, that has everything. Lowell the most self-absorbed character, looking down on those of whom she craves the attention and affection of, though hard to resist as Angel can attest to. She isn't afraid of him being a vampire, because she had only seen the good and his face hadn't changed. He forgot to mention he has a soul and she won't, but she becomes plenty scared after she sees first hand what she would become. The last portion of the episode, among the season's very best. Angelus's dialogue, along with Boreanaz's delivery, superb.

A must watch episode...

...if only for Cordelia's play.

The lethargy and sorrow of the actress wanting to become one of the undead holds this episode together.

Interesting twist on the whole spiking a drink on a date thing.

Temporary illusion ...
Howlin Wolf14 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the idea of the episode; playing on the vanity of Hollywood, and the idea that getting what you want can sometimes be a curse...

... but, true happiness should not/is not/CAN not be the same as 'chemical inducement'!

Gloves are off when Angelus is back...
m-478269 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The show always was self aware and satirical. But this time is is about real life dynamics, and those of its own scripts. This episode was Angel's first try at a true Hollywood criticism. This era entertainment, was completely schizophrenic, for making fun of patterns and ideas it used to make money from. And « Eternity » does it implicitly, in a way you still get the message loud and clear. This business is bad and corrupt, but you need it to live, just like Angel needs blood to keep moving. The story has the same structure as most episodes this season, but the mini twist near the end, give slasher fans something to chew on. There's a clear score setting too, with the way writers portray actresses and the entertainment business too, when one is portrayed as too talentless to say it, and the other, too thin and unpopular to land a new role again. And how hurtful truths fly out of people's mouth, once the beast is out. It was a dark but but needed approach, for a show taking place in a city like LA, in which the hero seems to have landed in spite of himself, I thought. And I just love the way Angel pays for his slip up eventually, that part was funny. I won't say it's one of the best episodes of the season, but it is still worth checking once in a while.
