Angel turns a corner
katierose29525 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is the episode where Angel comes back to his senses. After spending the last several weeks on a destructive path, he finally begins to come out of his darkness. In "Epiphany" Angel regains his sense of self and tries to reconnect with his friends. Unfortunately, his friends aren't so willing to just welcome him back into the fold. This is a really fun, satisfying episode that starts Angel's recovery. It also wraps up this chapter of the Darla storyline and it's Kate's last episode. You shouldn't skip it if you're watching the show on DVD.

"Epiphany" revolves around Angel's recovery from his downward spiral. After sleeping with Darla, he wakes up and has a epiphany. He didn't experience perfect happiness and lose his soul. Instead, he felt perfect despair. Now, he's looking at Darla and he feels like his normal self again. He may not be able to bring down Wolfram and Hart. But he can still fight on the side of good, saving one person at a time. Darla is horrified that he's still a White Hat. Angel apologizes for not being able to "save" her from Dru and then he tells Darla that she need to leave town. He hurries off to save Kate from her suicide attempt. Somehow, he enters her house, even without an invitation, and rescues her.

Then, Angel goes to Lorne who tells him that he need to reconnect with his friends. Wes, Cordy and Gunn are in trouble. The demons who infect people with third eyes are attacking them. They kidnap Cordy and attack Wes. Angel arrives at Wesley's apartment just in time to kill some of the the demons. Then they go looking for Cordelia. Meanwhile, Lindesy learns that Angel and Darla have slept together. Furious, he goes after Angel for revenge. Angel fights Lindesy. Then he saves Cordy, Wes and Gunn from the demon clan. They still don't want to go back to work for him, yet. Angel says that's okay, because he's willing to work for them. Meanwhile, Darla leaves town.

There are some really fun parts to this episode. I love Angel's desperation to win back his friends' trust. He's been ignoring them for episode after episode this season. But in "Epiphany" he's so cute and repentant that I just want everyone to forgive him for his mistakes. When he saves Cordy, he asks her if she's okay. Cordy says, "No. You really hurt my feelings." Angel just looks so heartbroken that I'm instantly back on his side again. Really, all he has to do is stare down at the floor, looking hurt and sad, and I instantly forget why anyone's mad at him at all. I also love Angel's scenes with Darla. The two of them just play off of each other really well. She can't believe that he didn't experience perfect happiness with her. It's pretty funny. Also, "Epiphany" is one of the few episodes where I sort of like Kate. She's back to treating Angel like a friend, which is a nice change. I really like that he could enter her house without an invitation, like the PTB were looking out for them. Also, I like Wes shooting demons from his wheelchair. Wes is pretty much the only good guy in the Buffyverse who has any luck with guns. He blasts a hole in the demon, getting green goo all over him and damaging his ceiling. Then he sort of looks up at the ruined plaster and sighs, "I can only hope that Mrs. Sanders wasn't at home." It's just hilarious.

On the down side, Angel is a little harsh with Darla this episode. After they have sex, he kicks her out of the Hyperion and tells her to leave town. Granted she's evil and all, but still...

My favorite part of the episode: Wes and Angel riding in the car. Angel is trying to get Wesley to forgive him. Wesley is still feeling betrayed and angry. Wes goes into a long explanation about Angel Investigations's problems with the three eyed demon case. Angel listens to all of it and finally says, "Really. You kept the name, huh? Angel Investigations." It's just a cute little scene.

There is such a thing as bad sex
limetalhead12 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
While 'Epiphany' has its ups and downs, it's still one of the best episodes of season 2 because of all the emotion involved. After being on the brink in 'Reprise' and doing it with Darla while almost in a fit of depression, he wakes up and miraculously comes to his senses. Having the scene so similar to when he lost his soul after sleeping with Buffy was a perfect set up for his return to reality. Seeing him out in the rain, I first thought, "Oh great, he's lost his soul again." But when he comes to and is disgusted by what he did with Darla was kind of a shock. Telling her that unlike when he did it with Buffy, sleeping with her was perfect despair, not happiness. While kicking her out was a little cruel, she still was a vampire, wasn't she.

My least favorite part was that this was Kate's last episode. I enjoyed any episode she was in and wanted to see more of her. Kate & Angel had such amazing chemistry as characters. When she first appeared in 'Lonely Hearts' and especially in 'Sense and Sensitivity', she and Angel almost seemed like they'd make a better couple than Angel & Buffy ever did. And no matter how much Kate may have turned on Angel, this episode proved that he did care for her in more than a platonic way. This was made evident by him going out of his way to save her after her attempted suicide. The mutual bond was confirmed at the end when she's the only one who realizes Angel had an epiphany. KATE: "Yikes. it sounds like you had an epiphany." ANGEL: "I keep saying that but nobody's listening." KATE: "Well I'm pretty much convinced since I'm alive to be convinced." ANGEL: "You know, you don't have to be a cop." KATE: "I'm okay. Anyway, I'm not headed towards another pill-a-thon. I'm very grateful. I never thought you'd come for me but I got cut a huge break and I believe. I don't know what I believe but I..have..faith that maybe we're not alone in this." ANGEL: "Why?" KATE: "Because I never invited you in." Even though those were her last lines, I was happy to see Kate's tenure on the show end on a positive note with her 'being on Angel's side' again. Losing her also sucked because she was so damn hot.

Even though it was a little cheesy with how they did it, I was happy to see Angel reunite with Wes, Gunn & Cordy. Him saying he wanted to work for them actually made sense in some way. It allows Angel the freedom to be the champion and do a lot of the leg work without all of the pressure of being the boss.

Really Great

Warning: Spoilers
I really loved this episode. I wasn't expecting to, after where we left off last episode.

I didn't really think Angel would lose his soul again. I've never understood why everyone decided that Angel couldn't have sex at all without losing his soul. I was pretty sure it was just because it was with Buffy in a beautiful and truly happy moment. And if any sex was going to get rid of the soul, it wouldn't be this one, done in a moment of pure despair with someone he mostly wants to kill. Sure enough, I was right.

But I wasn't expecting it to cause an epiphany. It was really fun seeing Angel have this epiphany and make a complete turn around. He really hit rock bottom, and managed to make a pretty swift turn around back up. As Lorne mentions, if Angel isn't going to be Angel, we'd at least prefer him to be evil than hyper-broody. And I'm really glad we got Angel back.

My favourite part was him trying to make it up to Wes, Cordy, and Gunn. Especially with Wes in the car, he kept trying to make light-hearted jokes, and it was just so adorable.

The fight between Angel and Lindsey is also pretty fun. It's just so raw and well-done (and I'm sure Angel looking so beat up when he asks for forgiveness doesn't hurt!). I love that post-epiphany, he returns Lindsey's car with a "Sorry" note.

I had been worried about how Angel would finally make his return, and how he's win back the trust and love of his friends. I couldn't quite see a smooth way to do it that would feel right. But I think this episode did a really fantastic job doing that, and overall was really enjoyable, with a great mix of drama and humour.

Eh, kill her, give her a cab fare, whatever.

Warning: Spoilers
Epiphany is about Angel helping Wesley, Cordy and Gunn, as the clan of three eyed demons seek retribution.

A feel good episode, while a little flawed, you have to love. After giving in to the grumpy side of the force, Angel's given another chance, reborn, if you will. All happy to see him, but not ready to forgive. "I want to work for you," a nice touch. Everything involving Lindsey's too far fetched for me.

Darla: Let go of me. You still have a soul.

It was perfect, Darla. It was perfect despair
SleepTight66612 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
It was perfect, Darla. It was perfect despair - It might not be as mind-blowing as 'Reprise', it is still one hell of an episode. Too bad 'Darla' didn't have that many scenes, and left during the middle of the episode. After she slept with 'Angel', she thought she had turned him evil, but he didn't turn evil but instead had an epiphany. Later 'Lindsey' tries to take revenge by hitting 'Angel' with his truck, but instead gets beaten up and his plastic hand squashed into pieces. The episode also reunites 'Angel' with his old gang, all three are in trouble for destroying the eye at the back of a girl, so the demons use 'Cordy' and plant her with a brand new eye. Eventually 'Angel' helps the gang rescue her and asks to work for them. My favorite scenes are 'Kate's, she only has two, in one he saves her from her overdose by taking a shower with her - Thanks, now get out. And her very last scene in which she says to have never invited him in. ANGEL: Well, I guess I kinda worked it out. If there is no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. 'cause that's all there is. What we do, now, today. I fought for so long. For redemption, for a reward, finally just to beat the other guy, but... I never got it. KATE: And now you do? ANGEL: Not all of it. All I wanna do is help. I wanna help because I don't think people should suffer, as they do. Because, if there is no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world. KATE: Yikes. It sounds like you had an epiphany. ANGEL: I keep saying that. But nobody's listening. (9.5 out of 10)

The gang back together

Warning: Spoilers
EPIPHANY

The Good; All of it, just magnificent, especially love the Lindsey/Angel fight and the truck crashing through the window.

The Bad; Anyone?

Best line: Gunn; "So what, you had a epiphany? Just wake up and bang?" Angel; "Sort of the other way around"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Even though it's just plastic you wince when Angel smashes Lindsey's hand

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; 18 Cordy this time around

Inverting the Hollywood cliché; We all expect Angel to lose his soul but he doesn't only Buffy can do that to him

In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; still off from last week so yes 12

Cordy's tattoo;4

Cheap Angel; 6

Fang Gang in bondage: Wes and Gunn at the house Cordy: 5 Angel: 9 Wes: 4 Gunn; 1

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy post-impregnation Cordy: 11 Angel: 12 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1 Gunn; 1 Lorne; 1

Kills: 1 demon for Angel and one for Wes Cordy: 5 vamps, 1 demons Angel; 22 vamps, 32 and 1/2 demons, 3 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 2 demon Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; 5 vamps+ 2 demons.

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 6

Characters killed: 35

Recurring characters killed; 5;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 4, Angel, Cordy, Wes and Gunn

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 10 Wes; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 2; Buffy and Darla Wes; 2; Virginia and the bleached blonde

Kinky dinky: Darla and Angel have sex three times. Darla considers herself very good in the sack as she's been doing it for 400years and used to be a professional. She asks Angel was she "Not good?" which is exactly what Buffy says in Innocence. Lorne suggests that Angel give Darla cab fare (I had a friend who always said that if a guy does that/cooks you breakfast afterwards it made you a prostitute. Strangely she is now an unmarried mother). On that topic Cordy impregnated by a demon against her will for the second time. And we always thought Xander was the demon magnet? Of course if you like that sort of thing you can always just Google Monsters and Angels/GOT fetishism

Captain Subtext; Apparently the way to tell Angel and Angelus apart is that Angelus wears leather pants? Keith Topping suggests that at the end of the ep Lindsey is 'struggling with his sexuality' but I'm not so sure?

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 5,

Buffy characters on Angel; 14 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, Master, Anne

Questions and observations; The PTB decide to save Kate, well you would, wouldn't you? How much do I love Lindsey as a lonely drunken teenage buck with a pink carnation, pick up truck, cowboy boots and sledgehammer? Angel uses the 70s term 'pad', well he was about back then, a groovy cat if there ever was one. Angel smashing Lindsey's hand is SUCH a powerful moment, even when you know it's plastic it still makes you wince. Goodbye to Kate who leaves LA, changes her identity and becomes a district attorney in New York before returning to Angel in season 6. Angels observation that if it all means nothing then the smallest act of kindness means everything is just wonderful. Lovely ending too with Cordy being caught by Angel, the gang is back together.

Marks out of 10; 10/10

He's Back!
Samuel-Shovel5 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
After Angel's new low of last episode, his moment of clarity finally occurs. Angel's back! And Lindsey and Darla aren't too happy about it. Meanwhile the Skilosh demons are seeking vengeance for the death of their spawn; and they have their eyes set on Cordelia. Kate deals with her removal from the force.

Angel's character trajectory is back on the upward track because of his epiphany. His new philosophy on life is taking him in a whole new direction. He seems to have patched things up with Kate, as well. It will take time to heal old wounds but eventually the crew will be back to their old selves.

Side note: That scene where Lindsey is running Angel over repeatedly with his truck was amazing, best part of the episode.
