An episode about connections
katierose29527 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This is an episode about connections and loneliness, subjects that will be revisited throughout the series. By the end of "Couplet," Gunn & Fred are a couple, Cordy & Gru are a couple, Angel realizes that he's not really alone because he has Conner, and Wes, the one member of Team Angel without anyone, uncovers a prophesy that will inadvertently leave him completely alone. Honestly, "Couplet" isn't the best episode that "Angel" ever produces. But, it does reinforce some character stuff, it gets Cordy out of town for a bit and sets-up the Wesley story line that will unfold in the next three episodes and beyond. You could probably follow the season without watching "Couplet," but it's worth a look if only to better understand Wes and the prophesy that will have such a vital role in the rest of the series.

"Couplet" picks up just after "Waiting in the Wings." Cordy takes Gru back to her apartment. Before they can do the royal comshuck, though, she gets a vision about a slimy demon. She also remembers the Pylean rule about her vision: If she sleeps with Gru, her visions will pass to him. Cordy didn't become a part demon just to hand over her visions. But, she's also really eager to get Gru into bed. After talking with Wes, she starts looking for some sort of mystical protection.

Angel is not thrilled with Gru reentering the picture. Not only is Gru's relationship with Cordy irritating him, but Gru is also taking over parts of Angel's Champion role. After Gru kills a demon in the sunlight, something that Angel can't do, Angel begins to question his place. Wes reassures him that he's one of a kind, but Angel isn't real convinced. Especially, when Cordy dresses Gru up in Angel's clothes and gives him Angel's haircut. Angel reluctantly agrees to go to a demon brothel and pick up some mystical potion that will allow Cordy to sleep with Gru.

Meanwhile, Wes is working on Conner's origins. He's worried that there maybe something more to the baby's fate and that other's still want to steal him. He finds some books and works on decoding a prophesy. Fred and Gunn are getting closer. On an assignment together, they are trapped by a tree demon under the park. Gru and Angel have to save them. Then Angel gives Cordy the potion and tells her that he's giving her some time off. He wants her to go on vacation, somewhere with sun. She and Gru leave. Angel is depressed until he realizes that he still has his son to love. Unfortunately, Wes finally translates the prophesy, which says "The father will kill the son."

There are some fun parts to this episode. I can't believe the show got away with Cordy's of phrasing the idea that she might be able to keep her visions if she and Gru don't go all the way: "Maybe we could "com" without actually "shucking." It just makes me snicker every time I hear it. And I like Angel and Gru visiting the demon brothel. Angel is just so eager to tell everyone that he's not "with" Gru, or a princess... How many different demon brothel's are in LA anyway? That seems like a different one than the brothel Angel investigated back in season two's, "War Zone." Anyway, I also like the lady whose boyfriend was sucked underground. Her reasoning that he'd never cheat because they'd been engaged for eight years just has Angel staring at her. Finally, I love Wes. He's so sweet trying to reassure Angel that he'll always be the center of Angel Inc., even if Gru can walk in the sun. And I appreciate the sad irony that Wes is working so had to find out about Conner's origins. He's worried that something maybe happen and, by looking for answers, he accidentally sets it into motion. It's just got a whole Greek tragedy vibe that I enjoy... In a heartbreaking sort of way.

On the down side, with Cordy leaving town and remaining off screen for the next few episodes, the show looses a lot of it's comedy. Also, I like Gunn and Gru. I really do. But, there's no way I'd pick them over Wesley and Angel. Maybe it's the whole tortured hero thing, but personally I think Fred and Cordy are nuts. And if we were going to have a scene with Gru and Cordy at her apartment, I wish we'd gotten to "see" Dennis. Also, after seeing season five, I think it's sad to hear Gunn promising Wes that he'll always take care to Fred. Personally, I don't really blame Gunn for the season five disater, but I know that he blames himself and this episode sort of foreshadows the disaster to come.

My favorite part of the episode: Angel's reactions Gru. From his insistence that Gru has gotten shorter, to his complaints that Gru is using Angel's favorite broad sword, to his horrified response when the tree demon stabs Gru through the chest, "That's my shirt!" Honestly, it's some of the funniest material that Angel ever has.

Warning: Spoilers
COUPLET

The Good; A not so subtle tale of Angel drawing away from CC, funny but nothing really special UNTIL the final scene with Wes' revelation changing what had been a lightweight ep utterly.

The Bad; Tree demon looks stupid

Best line: Angel; "Life is short, OK not mine but most peoples"

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cordy's tatt; 10

Cheap Angel; 9 quite the reverse, he's very generous to CC

Fang Gang in bondage: Gunn and Fred trapped by the tree roots. So is the guy chained to the wall at the brothel but he doesn't want to be released. Or judged. Cordy: 5 Angel: 11 Wes: 6 Gunn; 4 Lorne; 3 Fred; 2

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 11 Angel: 14 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1 Gunn; 1 Lorne; 3

Kills: 1 demon for Gunn and one for Groo Cordy: 5 vamps, 3 demons Angel; 39 vamps, 55 and 1/2 demons, 7 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 12 demons+3 vamps, 2 humans Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; 8 vamps+ 9 demons. Groo; 1 demon

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2 Gunn; 1 Wes; 1

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 8

Characters killed: 46

Recurring characters killed; 8;

Total number of Angel Investigations: add Groo to the mix 7, Angel, Cordy, Wes, Gunn, Fred, Lorne and Groo

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 11 Wes; 1

Packing heat; Wes; 5 Doyle; 1 Angel; 1 Gunn; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: once again CC drawn to someone with a demon essence Cordy: 3 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast+Phantom Dennis Angel: 5; Buffy, Darla and The Transcending Furies Wes; 2; Virginia and the bleached blonde

Kinky dinky: CC on the Groo "RRRRrrrrrrr", likes his (admittedly formidable) muscles. CC wants to know if they can 'com without actually shukking'? (Second base?) She plans to rip the Groo's shirt off later, shouldn't she let him get his strength back first? Angel in a brothel not for the first time or I dare say not the last, seems a fun place for all. Reputedly there was a scene where Angel stumbles across Kate Lochley working as a hooker in the brothel but Elizabeth Rohm was too busy doing Law&Order. Gunn refers to voodoo booty rituals but he might be making that up.

Captain Subtext; Groo and CC and Fred and Gunn pair up leaving Angel and Wes to wander around like a gay couple. Angel objects to Groo 'handling his weapons' which is nothing to CC asking him to help her have sex with Groo. She also states that 'No women is going to tempt you' which he doesn't take as a compliment. The Madam thinks he and the Groo are a gay couple, Groo mentioning 'his princess'. Poor Wes wonders that Fred thinks of him as a brother.

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages; 5,

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

Questions and observations; Who wants to bet me that it was Numfar that did the 'Dance of Revolution'? AI still take the occasional paying case in order to fund Connor's college tuition (and presumably CC's holiday). Much in the same way as Buffy seems to increasingly rely on Dawn for her emotional needs as she slowly parts with Riley, Angel seems to get over CC by concentrating his affections on Connor whilst Wes throws himself into his work. Personally I love the Groo and I'm glad to have him on the show. CC refers to her cousin, we know she has no sister but is she an only child? Did you notice that the woman the demon grabs in the park looks the spitting image of Cordy (maybe her stand-in/stunt double?)

Marks out of 10; 7/10, good fun and you really feel for Angel and Wes

Warning: Spoilers
I actually love this episode , Angels jealousy is so amusing , a funny part when he is sizing himself up next to Gru. I will admit i was quite dissapointed with the arrival of Gru as i was excited to see what would happen between angel and cordelia but after watching numerous times i think it was right to not pair them up and have something in the way leads to more of interesting story line because you dont know whats goin to happen ,will Gru become a regular etc. So to round up this is not the best episode of Angel but a light hearted fun episode. 8/10

At least I won't be upsetting the average around here. Nobody in this office is ever gonna get any

Warning: Spoilers
At least I won't be upsetting the average around here. Nobody in this office is ever gonna get any - A great fun filled episode, I'm not sure what to think of 'Groo', there was a time that I loved him and wanted him to become a regular, but now, I'm not sure, I blame him for Cangel never hooking up. But I enjoy this episode a lot, it develops the characters, story lines and brings in some good comedy. One thing that I don't like to much is the way 'Cordy' treated 'Angel', she barely even noticed him while 'Groo' was around. But I loved how much 'Groo' and 'Angel' looked alike, with the same clothes and haircut, poor 'Angel' though, he thought that 'Groo' could replace him. I loved their scenes together, especially when they went to that pleasure place to get the potion - Angel, your coat is singing. Another storyline I liked was 'Wesley's jealousy of 'Gunn', and sending him and 'Fred' after a tree monster, I love tree monsters, especially the ones that have an internet connection. At the end of the episode 'Angel' tells 'Cordy' to take off for a few days together with 'Groo', I think that was necessary, especially for the upcoming arc that wouldn't have worked as well with 'Cordy' around. The end of the episode was my favorite scene "The Father Will Kill The Son". WESLEY: Why can't you have sex? CORDELIA: I could lose my 'visionity.' WESLEY: If you wanna play it that way. CORDELIA: Vision-ity. The visions! (9.0 out of 10)

Angel: "What do you think? - Honestly. Does he seem really 'better' than other men?" Demon: "He's magnificent."
antisocial113 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The plot of this episode is silly, but its the tons of little character moments that make it special.

Angel loses Cordy to Gru, and is then asked by Cordy to go with Gru to a demon brothel to get a potion, where they pass a room that where every sense is extended for maximum pleasure. Not exactly the place for a vampire with a soul, who if he experience a moment of true happiness will revert to blood sucking ruthless monster.

Wesley loses Fred to Gun, and while on the phone tracking down something in regards to Connor's origins, he is gazing at Fred and blocking out Gun, not paying attention to the person on the other end.

Angel telling Cordy to take time off, so that he wouldn't spend every day seeing her with Gru and not with him.

It's just a wonderful episode. One of my favourites!

Spurned Lovers
Samuel-Shovel11 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Couplet", Angel copes with Cordy's renewed relationship with the Groosalugg. After Groo saves the day, Angel is filled with self-doubt regarding his place within the group. Meanwhile, Wesley must deal with similar emotions regarding Gunn and Fred's newfound love. The duo's canoodling while on a stakeout leads them to be captured by a tree demon. Cordy asks Angel and Groo to retrieve a potion that will allow Groo and Cordy to make love without jeopardizing Cordy's visions. While all of this saddens Angel, in the end he realizes he's not alone, he has Connor. And maybe that's all he needs. Wesley continues to research prophecies regarding the improbably child and finds out that they foretell Angel killing his son.

This is a bit of a nondescript episode. Building off of the emotions of the previous show, "Couplet" dives deeper into Angel and Wesley's dismay at their unreturned love. Groo adores himself further to Cordy (although I think he looks goofier in his new appearance than his old one). There's two demon fights in this one but neither feel extremely important. We have no idea what's going on with WR&H or Holtz these days; the gang is dealing with their own issues.
