Not my favorite episode
katierose2951 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I've written a bunch of IMDb reviews for BTVS and "Angel." Ususally, I watch a few episodes, write a few reviews and then move on to the next DVD full of episodes, etc... I've seen all these episodes about 6 times over the past year, so it's really not that hard to keep track. So, when I sit, staring at the computer screen wracking my brain to recall what happened in an episode... It's not a good sign. It's not that "Benediction" is a bad episode, exactly. It's just only the last 10 minutes really matter. The rest of the episode is Angel and Conner bonding, which will pretty much be nullified by the season finale. So what's the point? Anyway, you need to see the end if you're watching the season because Holtz death will have huge repercussions. But otherwise it's kinna forgettable.

Basically, the episode revolves around Holtz being back in LA. He's aged really badly, but he's still the same bitter zealot that he's always been. While in that hell dimension, he grew to love Conner and he's not about to let the kid bond with Angel. He hooks up with his old pal Justine and the two of the cook up a plan. Meanwhile, he sends Conner to the Hyperion to trying and "see through" Angel's Champion mask. Angel takes the kid vampire slaying and the two of them have a good time. Wes and Lilah look on as the father son team battles demons. Wes immediately realizes who Conner is, which really interests Lilah.

Meanwhile, Conner is annoyed that Lorne is a demon. And, when he finds out that Cordy is part demon, too, he tries to stab her. She melts the knife and draws out a lot of the bad energy in the kid. More subdued Conner agrees to go out with Gunn and Fred, who have just returned. They had been out tracking residue from the hell dimension or whatever, and it led them to Holtz. They quickly tell Angel, who heads off to confront Holtz. Cordy warns him not to, but he won't listen. Holtz puts on a show for Angel, telling him that he's going to leave Conner alone. He even gives Angel a good-bye note for Conner. But when Angel leaves, Holtz has Justine stab him in throat with an ice-pick to simulate a vampire attack. When Conner overhears Fred and Gunn saying that Angel is at Holtz's, he runs off to protect Holtz and finds his dead body. Justine tells him that Angel did it and Conner prepares to get revenge.

There are some good parts to this episode. Wes and Lilah are just so, SO cool together. I never would have thought of hooking them up, but I'm glad that someone did because it just works so well. Also, I like Lorne calling Conner on his crap. Most of Team Angel just ignores his abuse. But Lorne, who arguably spent more time with the baby than anyone except Angel, just doesn't trust Conner. It fits with his ability to read people. The fight scene in the night club is also cool. I like how Wes & Lilah are watching Angel & Conner fight and Wes just instantly knows that the kid is Angel's son. Wesley's so smart. And even I have to admit that for a second, watching Conner & Angel in the alley way afterwords, I wished that Angel could really bond with his son. He just loves Conner so much that it breaks my heart. Finally, I love the final scene of the episode, where Angel is reading that letter that Holtz gave him, while Holtz & Justine stage a vampire attack. "Conner" says Angel, smiling with satisfaction that Holtz is promising to leave his son alone. "Steven" whispers Holtz as he dies. "Dad!" Conner shouts as he runs to Holtz's side. Justine tells him that Angel did it and the episode ends with Conner spitting out one finally word, "Angelus." It's just really neat.

On the down side, I still hate Conner. If Cordelia drains all the "bad" out of him with her glow-y magic, why is he still such a jerk? Also, what is Angel's deal? Holtz kidnaps his son, drags him into a hell dimension and Angel ends up APPOLOGIZING to him?!? It's insane. He tries to smother poor Wes, but he feels sympathy for the abductor's plight? Give me a break. I'd have liked the episode more if Angel HAD killed Holtz. Just my opinion.

My favorite part of the episode: That vampire saying that Justine "thinks she's the Slayer." It's just a nice little reminder of the show's history.

Angel and Holtz finish it at last

Warning: Spoilers
BENEDICTION

The Good; The return of Justine but this ep will always be remembered for the incredible scenes between Angel and Holtz. They strike you as a pair of weary emotional boxers slugging it out to the last. I especially like the moment where Angel rages at Holtz for stealing his son and Holtz points out that he kept Angel's son alive whilst Angel(us) killed his.

The Bad; Angel just leaves a set of vamps lying on the floor of the club.

Best line: Justine; "How did you survive?" Holtz; "My hatred kept us alive" HOOOOoooooooooo! also like; Fred; "He's survived an unspeakable hell dimension. Who hasn't? It doesn't mean you can leave him on the streets of LA"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Holtz forcing Justine to stab him with the icepick

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cordy's tatt; 10

Cheap Angel; 9

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 11 Wes: 6 Gunn; 4 Lorne; 3 Fred; 2

Kills: 2 vamps for Angel. 2 for Connor as well and we can add in the demon he killed in The Price Cordy: 5 vamps, 3 demons Angel; 41 vamps, 57 and 1/2 demons, 7 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 12 demons+3 vamps, 2 humans Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; 10 vamps+ 11 demons. Groo; 1 demon Fred; 1 vamp Connor; 2 vamps and one demon

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 8 Fred; 1

Recurring characters killed; 8;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 6, Angel, Cordy, Gunn, Fred, Lorne and Groo

Kinky dinky: According to Fred's gizmo Connor is 'Hot'. Gunn dislikes the idea of tracking Angel's teenage son's 'emissions'.

Captain Subtext; Groo and Lorne, their scene together very reminiscent of a scene in season 5 Buffy with Xander and Riley at the magic shop. But the Groo does it SOOOOO much better than Riley does "If she asks" Awwwwww!

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages; 5,

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

Questions and observations; One thing I've noticed in working my way through Buffy season 6 and Angel season 3 is that I keep leaping ahead wanting to watch more and more Angel and not Buffy. Note that the PTB's decide to save Justine through CC's vision. Holtz is quite religious believing god gave him Connor. You genuinely get the impression that they do love each other. Interestingly Fred refers to 'being at the bottom of the ocean looking upwards'. Does Holtz go to hell? Is he an evil man? The only evil thing I can think off he does is slitting Wes' throat but that's Justine and we've no idea that he even knew about it.

Marks out of 10; 8/10, an ep of great emotional depth and poignancy

I kept your son alive. You murdered mine
SleepTight66629 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I kept your son alive. You murdered mine - A fantastic second episode of the 'Connor'-arc. Almost as good as the previous episode. 'Holtz' realizes that 'Connor' came back to see his real father, and the evil bastard knows exactly how to manipulate 'Connor' into hating his real father for good. 'Justine' also returns, fans never seemed to like her but I think she was a pretty interesting character, I loved 'Holtz' line when he asked her to kill him - I'm not asking you to follow me into hell. Just help send me there. I also utterly loved the 'Wesley/Lilah' scene on the balcony, I cannot stress enough how much I love those two characters together - I thought the "come alone" was a particularly ironic touch. I mean, how else would you come?. 'Cordy's part was also interesting, her deaf-vision cracked me up and I loved the glowy-scene with 'Connor'. A fantastic episode really, the ending gets me teared up every time. 'Holtz' is probably the only "villain" in the entire Jossverse that got his vengeance. JUSTINE: I can't believe you survived it. How did you?. HOLTZ: My hate kept us alive.. JUSTINE: Hate gets a bad rap. It can keep you going sometimes when nothing else will.. HOLTZ: Yes. I found I had to stay alive that I might pass on my legacy of hate. But something happened in that place, Justine, something changed. Amidst the most unspeakable ugliness the hate turned into love. Love for a son. Hate is not enough. I found that love is far more powerful. Now there is just one thing I need you to do for me and then I can finally be done with vengeance..

Time heals all wounds
kingsx_6415 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Or does it. As others have said, this was probably one of the best written episodes of the series. If the writers can make me feel sympathy for two of the most hated characters on the show, then they definitely did a great job. Starting with Cordelia's gift to Connor to help him 'let go' of the anger he felt for the world he was in. Charisma had actual tears flowing during that scene. And me too, almost. That's some great acting. Second, when Holtz tells Angel "every time you look upon his face, every time he calls you father, you will be reminded of that which you took, and can never give back. And if that is vengeance, I find I have no taste for it". Wow, just wow. That was heavy. There is a reason why Keith Szarabajka (Daniel Holtz) has a huge acting portfolio. And scenes like this prove why he is a master. Gave me goosebumps. Another thing Angel has always done so well, is finish an episode. They have a knack for making the last 30 seconds awesome, and surprising. As soon as Conner see's the 2 holes in Holtz's neck, I knew Holtz wasn't as innocent and well meaning as he appeared. When he tells Angel, "You can give him what I can't, his purpose", I didn't realize it meant killing Angel. And that was his plan all along. Just great story telling. With none of the who likes who crap thrown in. A superb adult story line. 10 starts from me!!

Father/Son Time
Samuel-Shovel27 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Benediction", Angel and his son start hanging out and palling around the way a vampire with a soul and his kid would... by heading to an L.A. nightclub and beating up some vamps. Wesley continues to be recruited by Lilah and he discovers that Connor is back and all grown up. Cordy discovers more of her new demon powers. Groo continues to feel animosity towards Angel because of his jealous over Cordy's affections. The gang discovers Holtz is back in town. Angel asks Gunn & Fred to distract Connor while he goes and confronts the now elderly Holtz. The two have a tete-a-tete about Connor's future and Holtz tells Angel he's leaving again. He leaves Connor in Angel's hands, knowing they both love the boy.

Holtz asks Justine to mercy kill him. Connor shows up in time to see the body and mistakes two stab wounds for vampire bite marks. Vengeance fills his heart as the episode ends.

I'm watching this and BtVS concurrently, switching back and forth between episodes to stay in chronological lockstep. The last two episodes end extremely similarly: Connor seeing Holtz dead, filled with rage and Willow holding a wounded Tara and ready to perform some dark magic. Both episodes end on seemingly important moments moving forward.

One of my main critiques for the Buffy-verse through the years is that it falls for one big cliche over and over again: characters mishearing a conversation or misinterpreting events. This leads to future conflict. It always bugs me that everyone's lack of communication is the main driver for many major storylines. Here it has happened again.

It starts with Gunn and Fred not even thinking of Connor's vampire hearing. They have to know from living around Angel how good his ears are. Well this is his son! They should know better.

And the way that Justine stabs Holtz to kill him, accidentally making it look like a vampire bite mark. And that Connor conveniently shows up just in time to watch him die. I mean come on... It's all a little too much. Sure, it gets the plot where it needs to go, but I think the writers could have went in a different direction to get where they wanted this to go: a battle between Angel & Connor.

Also, how the heck did teenage Connor gain entrance to that nightclub? Where are the bouncers?

The Holtz story arc wraps up in a very unsatisfying way
nightwishouge4 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The episode has a really great scene in which Angel confronts Holtz and the latter admits he no longer has a taste for vengeance. He has grown to love Connor as a son and wants the boy to be happy, even if it means giving Angel some measure of peace as a byproduct.

What a mature resolution to a storyline of revenge. Love trumps hate. For a moment, Holtz is one of the most complex villains in the Buffyverse.

Then we find out he's lying. Justine stabs him in the throat with an ice pick to make Connor think Angel killed him. Connor goes on hating Angel, based on flimsy and easily disproven lies.

Ho hum.

There are many points at which Holtz threatens to become interesting. When he is confronted with the fact that Angel has a soul. When his Christian convictions butt up against his thirst for revenge. When he sees the gang carrying a crying baby through the rain, after Darla stakes herself, and lowers his crossbow in apparent remorse. And when we suppose in this episode that he may actually have grown to love Connor. But the show keeps walking it back. He's just a vengeance machine of single-minded purpose. And he can take out a SWAT team single-handedly, for some reason. He's completely flat as a character, with no arc whatsoever. It's too bad, because I like the actor who plays Holtz and think he could have handled a more dimensional role quite capably.
