The Indiana Jones episode
katierose2953 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, seriously, was I the only one completely fooled by this episode the first time through? I'll admit it. I bought into the whole plot line and fell for the all the "quick fixes" it offered. I sat there thinking, "Huh. This is sort of ripping off "Indiana Jones," isn't it? But at least everything's working out. Cordy and Angel are back together. Wes and Angel are friends again. The sun is back. Sure, I'll accept this." Then the show went and threw a curve ball that caught me completely off guard. I love this episode, and I actually appreciate it more every time I see it. It's just fun and it gives me such a nice glimpse into Angel's mind. Plus, it sets up one of my all-time favorite story lines in the entire Buffyverse: The return of Angelus. Love him! Anyway, I highly recommend that you see "Awakening."

This episode revolves around Team Angel trying to awaken Angelus. He's the only one who knows what the Beast is and they need to talk to him. In order to do that, they need to extract Angel's soul. In case there's anyone out there who doesn't know the back story here --which I kinna doubt-- a lot of this plot line goes back to BTVS season two. Angel lost his soul after sleeping with Buffy. (Hence his horrified whisper of her name as he looses his soul in this episode.) After rampaged through Sunnydale for half a season, Willow got Angel's soul back. Just a little bit late, as it turned out, but that's another story... Only Cordy was around back then, so the others don't really understand how bad Angelus can be. Angel resists the idea letting Angelus out, but Cordy talks him into it. Wes gets a mystic to start the ceremony.

Suddenly, the mystic tries to kill Angel and they have to fight him off. It turns out that he works for the Beast and, written in the tattoos all over his body, is the information they need. They discover that they can kill the Beast if they find a magic sword hidden under LA. Angel, Cordy, Wes and Conner go looking for it. Along the way they encounter a lot of Indiana Jones style traps. Spikes in walls, booby trapped floors, etc... (I especially like the bells on strings. If one rings it sets off the trap, so they have to move slowly. If you think of "It's a Wonderful Life" and the line "Everytime a bell rings an angel gets it wings," I think it's especially cool. Angel really doesn't want his soul to "fly" off. His unconscious is trying to keep the bells silent. But it's a losing battle. Just my take on it.)

Anyhow, Angel finally finds the sword. Along the way he reunites with Cordy and mends fences with Wes. He also tells all his friends how much he needs them. Conner helps him in the final fight against the Beast. After killing the Beast, the sun returns. Angel and Cordy sleep together. Angel realizes too late that, in making love, he's lost his soul. The scene switches back to the basement of the Hyperion and it becomes clear that everything was just Angel's dream. He experienced perfect happiness under the mystic guy's spell and has now lost his soul.

There are some great parts of this episode. What I like about it, though, is the insight it gives into Angel's deepest thoughts and desires. All it would take for him to be happy is for his own little world to be --just for a moment-- the beautiful place that he's always wished for. He wants to kill the bad guy, get the girl, bond with his kid and have friends who love him. It's all so sweet and simple. So his fantasy has all these great, almost childlike, elements. There's Indiana Jones, of course. But there's also Wes. All Angel wants is for Wes to say that he's sorry and when he does, Angel finally, totally forgive him. I especially like the fact that when they split up in the cave, Angel sends Conner with Wes. It's like he's healing the wound that Wesley kidnapping Conner caused and is starting over with a clean slate. And, I don't think that Angel knows why Wes and Gunn are fighting, but he even has them making up. Then there's Cordelia. She says that she loves him and she doesn't care about his past as Angelus. While Conner finally calls his father "Angel" and means it. (I also like that Angel and Conner's fight scene ties in with season five's "Not Fade Away.") Angel even has Wes and Fred doing advanced research with fancy sounding names, which sort of tells me that he never thinks their explanations for things are really clear. He just trusts that they know what they're doing and acts on it. Finally, I just love Angel's speech at the end. How he tell all his friends that they're Champions and he needs them to keep fighting. "Angel" is a show about family, team work & redemption and I think that Angel's little talk just summed up everything perfectly.

On the down side, a part of me wishes that Angel HAD gotten his perfect day. I just love him and I want him to be happy. It's a shame he doesn't go to Africa and fight those demon trials like Spike does in BTVS season six. Then Angel could have a soul without the curse and he could be finally have perfect happiness. Just a thought.

My favorite part of the episode: The last three seconds, when Angelus wakes up and starts laughing, just makes me smile every time.

Who booby traps a dead end? That's just not right

Warning: Spoilers
Who booby traps a dead end? That's just not right - And season 4 brings us another utterly brilliant episode. I remember when I watched this episode on TV, I was pretty much sighing throughout the episode and saying 'what the hell is going on? Cheesy much?' everything seemed to go well, 'Wesley' apologized to 'Angel', 'Angel' finally got the girl and 'Connor' was acting like the son-of-the-year and helped 'Angel' kill 'The Beast' with a sword. It felt completely out of character. But oh boy, was I surprised when I found out it was all 'Angel's perfect-illusion to give him perfect happiness and turn him into 'Angelus'. I think I stared at the TV screen for about 10 minutes after the episode ended, I mean, how many people can say that they totally saw the ending coming? What makes this episode so amazing is really the SHOCK at the end, because most of this episode was a big cheesy-roller-coaster but I think that it's exactly how the writers wanted it to be, to make the audience say 'man, this is just getting too easy' and then the shock at the end. Absolutely fantastic episode with a killer ending that brings the long-waited 'Angelus' back to the show. CONNOR: Everything's going to hell because of you. You're the reason that the sun is gone, that I don't have a home to go back to. You're the reason that she... It's you. You're the reason my life sucks. ANGEL: Get over it. (9.5 out of 10)

The One With Angelus...
taylorkingston6 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. I love the character of Angeles even though he's a heartless, soulless, murdering monster, it's still so much fun to see him come out and "play".

In this episode, the Beast has finally arrived to Los Angeles, and they think he might know someone familiar. Angelus. Remember him? The person Angel was before he got his soul back, twice. In Season 2 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, he came out and had a lot of what he calls fun, threatening Buffy and her friends. Not to mention torturing Giles and killing Miss Calendar. So, they realize that Angelus knows the Beast, and they need information. So they get someone who can steal his soul, and put it in a jar for safe keeping. The ritual begins and turns out that guy was trying to kill Angel. A series of events happen, one including Angel sleeping with Cordelia. Which gives him one moment of true happiness, which takes his soul. We are now back with the Shaman guy, who turns out this is how he steals the soul. He gets Angel in a dream-like state, gives him illusions of something that will turn him evil, and then it does. Looks like Angelus is gonna have some fun.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

Angel's Perfect Ending
Samuel-Shovel9 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In "Awakening", after the events of last episode, Wes grabs a shaman to extract Angel's soul and bring out Angelus so the gang can learn more about the Beast and his relationship to it. But the shaman tried to kill Angel. They defeat him but it leads them on a journey to find a sword that can kill the Beast. They locate it; Angel and Connor use it against the big bad, stabbing it in the head and killing it. Angel and Cordy make love, causing him a moment of perfect happiness, breaking the curse.

But wait! It was the appearance of perfect happiness. The shaman from the beginning did all of this to Angel in a dream-like state. None of it actually happened. It tricks Angelus into coming out. He laughs manically as the episode ends.

I peeked at the episode rating with about 10 minutes to go and was absolutely shocked at the rating. I was worried the Angel fanbase had gone crazy for a second, voting so highly a mediocre episode. It wasn't until the twist ending that it all fell into place for me. What a great twist! I feel like I should have seen it coming but it completely blindsided me.

Anyways, I'm excited to see what's next. I enjoy when Boreanaz gets to portray his darker side. I was a bit out on this whole Angel not knowing what Angelus did in the past thing but this episode won me over to the plot device a bit.

Welcome, Keyzer....

AWAKENING

The Good; Love Wes beating up the shamen's guard, he's really come a long way from the fop we first met in Buffy season 3. CC's little talk with Angel is excellent, manipulating him shamelessly.

The Bad; It seems a bit silly all the hassle they go to in order to take Angel's soul away. Either give him some of the drug from 'Eternity' or invite Buffy down for a one night stand. Why not just destroy the wooden swords or cut the belts and bells?

Best line: Angel; "Wood, why does did it have to be wood?"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Spike through Wes' hand anyone? Stabbing the Beast up through the chin also isn't nice but you'd do it if you had to.

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés Inverting the Hollywood cliché; Connor more than willing to kill his father.

In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cheap Angel; 6

Fang Gang in bondage: Angel tied to the table Cordy: 5 Angel: 13 Wes: 6 Gunn; 4 Lorne; 4 Fred; 2

Gunn; 11 vamps+ 12 demons, 5 zombies, 1 human. Groo; 1 demon Fred; 3 vamp+ 1 demon, 5 zombies Connor; 8 vamps, 5 zombies, 2 demons

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: this ep is a Cangelers delight but alas it was never to be. Cordy: 5 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast+Phantom Dennis+Groo+Connor Angel: 5; Buffy, Darla and The Transcending Furies Wes; 3; Virginia, the bleached blonde and Lilah Gunn; 1 Fred Fred; 1 Gunn Groo; 1Cordy

Kinky dinky: Fred a bit bashful over shining the torch over the Shamen's body. CC refers to the belts and bells as an S&M bondage party, has she been to many? CC tells her breasts that she knew they'd get her in trouble one day. But in fairness they've done a great deal for her over the years.

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages; 6,

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

Questions and observations; Gwen has skipped town and I don't blame her. Kolchak the Nightstalker referred to (the inspiration for the X-files).

I'm afraid here we have the definitive end of Cangel. When Angel lost his soul in Surprise everything was going to hell and Buffy alone was all it took to give him the happy. In this it takes a number of factors, killing the Beast, bringing the sun back, Wes back in the fold, Connor losing his resentment AND sex with CC. What's more watch it with the subtitles on. As Angel, ahem, has his pleasure moment, he says 'Buffy'. Sorry CC he wasn't thinking of you. What exactly is Jasmine's plan? Why does she want to turn day into night?

Marks out of 10; 8/10
