Warning: Spoilers
This episode does a lot to help the series get more acquainted with the town of Mayberry. Instead of the focus being on individual characters, this is one which features the town itself as the character. When the story begins, you learn that some big-shot from Hollywood is coming to town to possibly shoot a film there. As a result, all the locals lose their collective minds--and busy themselves with extravagant plans about changing everything for the better to impress Hollywood. Unfortunately, all this 'positive' changes help to create exactly the sort of setting the film maker is NOT interested in---he already loved the town and its simple people and simple charms. And, like you'll see throughout the series, Andy is the only one with his feet firmly grounded despite all the hubbub.

People looking for a laugh out loud episode should probably skip this one. However, I am NOT saying it's a bad one--far from it. Instead of laughs, the emphasis here is in establishing the town's character and furthering the story--something at which "The Andy Griffith Show" excelled. Interesting and clever, though not a particularly funny show--but they don't all have to be.

Huge improvement with classic cast additions.
vitoscotti23 September 2022
Marvelous addition of Howard McNear replacing William Baldwin as Floyd shows its massive positive influence from this his very first episode. Mayor Pike (Dick Elliot) gets more screen time and displays his brilliance as his opinion flipping hilarious mayor character starts to hit stride. Lovely Juanita Pike (Josie Lloyd) is barely recognizable from her future other TAGS appearances as wonderful Lydia. These terrific cast additions take the pressure off Andy Griffith who had to do too much in the previous season 1 episodes forcing his southern fried country bumpkin humor that was painful at times to watch. The story and bland Hollywood director Mr Harmon (Dan Frazier) were secondary with the cast hitting home runs one after another.

The Town Goes Nuts
Hitchcoc24 November 2019
This is a simple plot where a movie producer decides to use Mayberry in a movie. After much back and forth it goes ahead. But the locals decide the way they are in real life isn't what Hollywood would wants. Of course people like Barney go whole hog and mess things up. Pretty predictable. Thought Barney's new uniform was pretty cool.

To the guy complaining about the spring locks on the jail cell
booradleywho1 December 2023
"If I were in charge," you say? For someone with such a critical view of such a small detail of the show, you sound ironically just like the character of Barney Fyffe. As you pull up your pants by your holster belt, stick out your chest, sniff a little and pout: "Now, if I were in charge, I tell you what I would do. I would nip it in the bud..." But, wait...you weren't in charge, were you? Maybe that's why the show remains one of the most successful sitcoms of all time and never gets old for thousands of fans. It's a comedy, hon. If you want realism, maybe try watching a drama or a true crime documentary. The spring lock on the jail cells was hilarious and brilliant. Bless your heart.

Spring locks instead of dead bolt locks
streetlight225 August 2020
I have no real life experience, but I expect most, if not all, jail cell doors have dead bolt locks instead of self locking spring locks. The joke of getting locked in a jail cell because the lock is a self locking spring lock gets pretty old. Were I in charge, the first time that happened, the lock would be changed to a dead bolt.
