Goober Is All They Got?
Hitchcoc15 December 2019
Barney is on vacation in Raleigh and Andy has to leave town for a couple days. It would seem there is no one willing to take over Andy's job during that time. Well, in steps Goober. The problem is that Goober goes about his business and ignores the Sheriff's office. Some strange things happen when a local hot rodder wants his car fixed.

Andy Finally Loses It
coreycitn6322 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Poor Andy he had to deal with Barney, Gomer, Otis and Ernest T. Bass. But it was Goober who finally makes Andy to lose his temper. Andy had to go to a Sheriff Convention ab Goober begs Andy to be in charge of the courthouse and Andy reluctantly does it. When Andy returns he sees a car in the courthouse. Andy is dumbfounded and demands Goober to remove it. Every time Andy returns the car is still intact and Andy is starting to fume and he even yells at Floyd. The final straw is when his fellow Sheriffs visits the courthouse and Andy fears that he will be a laughingstock. Luckily Andy was able to talk himself out of the mess. Finally Andy had enough at Goober and points a rifle at him and to get it done.

The whole point of the episode is that even Andy can be pushed too far.

Big laugh classic

Many of my favorite scenes, and lines of the series. Goober says, "I'm better than nothing?" Andy replies, "well?" Funny when Aunt Bee mumble repeats how Goober said he'd be there. Andy storms off ,"yah, yah, yah!"

Larry Hovis is a treat as ever angry Gilly Walker. Always loved when he put his pedal to the metal screeching driving Goober to the courthouse.

Howard McNair is terrific watching and then a potential buyer of the car. A funny epilogue where Andy has no choice but to point a rifle at Goober to get him to remove the car.

There's a car in the courthouse
mloessel24 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Deputy Fife is out of town on vacation and Sheriff Taylor is left with finding someone to cover the courthouse and Goober's the man. Goober has good intentions but doesn't take his responsibility of staying in the courthouse seriously. Instead he gets disstracted when he decides to take apart an engine in the courthouse to see what's wrong with it. This vehicle is owned by hot rodder Gilly Walker. Aparently the Sheriff has no one else to call on and is left with Goober. Character actor George Lindsey's humor (aka Goober) is not enough. Goober's style of humor is funny but not equal to Fife's zaniness. Unfortunately, for me, this episode went flat. You would think putting a car in the courthouse would be outrageously funny. It wasn't enough.

Andy ruined this episode

Warning: Spoilers
Andy needs someone to stay at the courthouse while he's at a conference. Barney is out of town and all other prospects are unable to help. Goober offers and against his better judgment Andy agrees .

The conference centers on traffic safety and Andy meets with the Sheriff and deputy who are interested in making traffic safety a priority.

Back at the courthouse Goober is still in demand as a auto mechanic. He actually seems like a savant when it comes to cars . Nothing else! He takes a car apart in the courthouse! He also puts it back together. Andy returns to find the car still in the courthouse and panics when Aunt Bee tells him the men he met at the conference are dropping by to see him. He tries to dismantle the car but they walk in . Initially surprised they end up thinking it's a fine idea! Putting the traffic safety campaign into immediate effect! Have people been stopping by to see it they ask? Goober replied nonstop! They also ask him to do the same for them.

So it all works out. Yes not something you want everyday but it ends up ok and made things interesting.

So my problem with the episode is something that is getting too common on TAGS. Andy's irritability is not funny. He's no Fred Mertz! There is a way to be a grouch or easily irritated and make it funny. Many can do it Andy Griffith couldn't. He did many things well but not that although he did it better on Matlock . He also at the end holds a rifle on Goober ordering him to take the car apart . I doubt that would have been funny even back then .

I agree with kellielulu....

Not only is this episode entirely stupid from one end to the other, this is another one of those Andy the Grouch episodes.

It makes absolutely no sense for Goober to have taken the car apart out outside and brought parts in and put them back together in the courthouse. This is so ridiculous, and far beneath the quality of humor the Andy Griffith show (in its first five years) is known for. Of course I'm talking about the first five years. It's probably about as good as the awful shows of the last three years.

Kellilulu is right on target about Andy Griffith and his awful portrayal of Andy Taylor in this episode (and many other episodes, especially in the last three years.) Andy's pointing a rifle at Goober is wrong on several points, and certainly not funny.

But of course, kellilulu and I will get lots of thumbs down for what we say because people just don't like to hear the truth.
