The actual name of the little dog that Opie brings in is "Alvin." This is revealed in the original sponsor ad for Sanka Coffee that originally aired during this episode.
The calendar in Otis' cell shows a month with only thirty days, with the thirtieth on a Monday. In 1963, that would set the story in September.
In this episode, a small-town sheriff (Andy Griffith) is beset with more dogs than he quite knows what to do with. In a scene from the movie, A Face in the Crowd (1957), Andy Griffith plays a rambler who convinces the residents of a small town to give all their dogs to the local sheriff, who is equally at his wit's end.
The "hangover cure" Andy gives Otis to drink appears to contain tobasco sauce, A-1 Steak Sauce and worcestershire sauce. Although the labels have been blacked out, the bottles are easily recognizable. As to what kind of juice was in the glass to begin with, it's hard to tell, given that the show is in black & white. Though, given the shade of color, it could possibly be tomato juice.
