Yet another episode where Barney is the braggart and needs to be rescued by Andy
planktonrules12 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
During the five seasons where Barney was a regular on the show and even including some guest appearances in subsequent seasons, Barney needed a lot of saving on his job by Andy. This episode wasn't the first of these and it wasn't the last--but it is a pleasant episode nonetheless.

The show begins with Barney very accidentally capturing a wanted criminal. Instead of acknowledging that it was all a fluke, his head (as usual) begins to swell and soon he's acting like a hero. But, when the man later escapes, Barney is naturally scared to death and ready to run for cover. So, it's up to old reliable Andy to step in behind the scenes and make it easy for Barney to catch the man again and save his reputation. And, as usual, Barney hasn't learned a darn thing in the process! Overall, a decent episode and one that further illustrates Andy's affection towards his boob of a deputy. Worth seeing, though it's not an especially funny episode--more just well-crafted and enjoyable.

Barney Can't Resist the Spotlight
Hitchcoc28 November 2019
When Barney inadvertently gets tangled up with an escaped prisoner and the man captured by state police, Barney becomes a big hero. The guy he captured is another Barney (character actor Barney Phillips who is famous for having three eyes on an episode of the Twilight Zone). Once Barney starts prancing around, it becomes obvious to Andy that there is more to the story. Once again, he has to look after his ding dong deputy. Of course, Don Knotts is a hilarious physical actor, wearing his nerves on his sleeve.

A true classic with many more to follow.

Andy's character is almost giving up the country bumpkin humor to play second fiddle to Barney's (Don Knotts) brilliant humor. The barn scene recapture will almost exactly be copied in Season 6 episode 18 "The legend of Barney Fife" even down to Barney swallowing his huge wad of gum. Barney's hilarious characteristics of extreme nervousness, fear and cowardice (he always overcomes) are starting to take shape and series is set to arrive in it's classic episode mode.

Barney twice draws his gun on innocent people (first Thelma Lou, then his party gang). State troopers attending and bringing a picnic basket to the party is quite absurd. Andy had some great aim to throw a rock across a barn and hit a tin can. Andy took a chance also where Barney's stray bullet would go appearing dangerously close to him.
