Baka acts as a character witness for an old friend
Tweekums11 July 2018
As this episode opens Dylan is away at a defence summit and Beka is about to act as a character witness for an old friend, Able Ladrone. He has been charged with stealing material from Techno-Core, a major defence contractor and his trial is taking place on a planet where lying is a punishable offence and the people can all spot lies... it won't be easy for Beka as all her friends seem to be rogues. Sure enough she can't answer the simplest questions without lying... the trial goes so badly that she ends up staging a jail break! They get back to Andromeda but her friends are less than impressed and invite the planet's personnel aboard. Beka and Ladrone flee on the Eureka Maru; soon after forces from Techno-Core arrive and they are going to use extreme force to get Ladrone and the data he stole.

This was a rather fun episode; several interesting questions are raised as the crew's opinions on what to do are divided and it is quite possible that the man Beka is helping isn't the good guy he claims to be. I liked the idea of people who can detect any lie; one wonders how a society would cope when one can't even tell 'nice lies'. The fact that Dylan was away for once was good... right up until he returns near the end to solve the problems in full 'Captain Perfect' mode. The episode includes some good action as the crew battle superior Techno-Core forces. There is also some humour provided by Harper's attempts to impress a woman who can spot any lies. Overall I'd say that for the most part this was a good episode; just a shame the solution to the problem, which in itself was pretty good, was provided by Dylan moments after he returned.
