Reunited with Harper... and Rommie, sort of
Tweekums27 August 2018
As this episode opens Rhade and Beka are in a bar when suddenly people start acting strangely; as though they are utterly terrified. When things settle down it emerges that somebody stole a valuable painting from the bar owner; he offers a sizable reward so Dylan, Rhade and Beka start searching for it. Clues lead them to Seefra-7. Here they find Harper, he has been there three years and isn't particularly pleased to see them. He has been working with Marika, a woman who is ignoring local anti-technology laws in an attempt to genetically recreate the ancient Vedrans. Dylan and the others also learn what happened to Rommie in the Magog attack and of Harper's so far unsuccessful attempts to bring her back.

Three episodes into this season the main characters are finally reunited. I liked how this was spread over a few episodes; this kept me wondering if the entire cast would be returning but not for too long. The story was fun enough; it provides some decent action and raises interesting questions. There is also one rather disturbing scene as Marika effectively tortures a sentient android Harper has created. Gordon Michael Woolvett makes a welcome return as Harper, a character who seems to have changed slightly, as one would expect after three years, but not too changed. Guest star Kendall Cross is suitably unpleasant as Marika. The scenes involving Rommie are good and suggest it may be some time before she is back to being her old self. Overall a solid enough episode.

Hasn't improved much and where's the real Andromeda hiding
The plot has moved on a bit from the first boring episode, but oh my, where is the real Andromeda hiding? The substitute avatar, Doyle is not convincing. I know that Harper is supposed to have a shallow attitude towards his ideal women, and I'm going to steer clear of the horrendously offensive myth of the dumb blonde, but I'm afraid that Brandy Ledford cannot carry off this part. The difference between her persona and that of Lexa Doig is like the difference between a classic novel and a romantic novella. The initial costume was garishly annoying, and subsequent ones make you wonder whether the costume budget had be pared down to a minimum. Dylan resembles James Bond in space, continually boffing every woman who comes his way. Are women really so serially cow-eyed and stupid? Maybe so but you just think oh here we go again. Where has the charm of this show gone?

I like the change of pace.

Four seasons mostly about the commonwealth was fine but it played out in season 4. In season 5 we have a new setting and new problems. I like it. I have avoided season 5 previously because of all the bad reviews. I'm glad I decided to watch.
