Minor point that bothered me

The Ally McBeal of season 1 knew nothing about professional sports. She told her therapist she disliked hockey because it was cruel to dress the animals and make them skate. She hated boxing. And when Greg was moving to Chicago, she that Chicago was a great city. "They have the best cupboards. . . . Yeah, everybody talks about their cupboards there." Greg figured out what she meant, "Um, Cubs. It's a baseball team." In this episode, turns out she loves the Boston baseball park and, referring to the Red Sox, she says, "My father and I used to listed to every game on the radio together every summer." Silly retcon.

Is a great character but the pairing with John sucks.

Double Standards

The main storyline of a 39 year old woman. Having sex with a 16 year old child, saying it's natural as boys reach sexual peak at 16. If this had been a 39 year old man having sex with underage girl. He would face criminal charges and be labled a pedophile and put on the sex offender's registration for life. Crazy how this show makes law breaking seem okay and funny.

This could not fly anymore

I love ally mcbeal and am always happy to rewatch it. We also have to remember that it was a show that came out in the 90s and the world was a very different place back then!

However, this storyline did not sit well with me and I think it really did not age well.

Ally and john are defending a 39 year old woman and a 16 year old boy and they want to argue romance? Even go as far as to say that it was beautiful? Renee said herself on trial "if it was a 16 year old girl and a 39 year old you wouldn't think twice". Well I'm glad that in 2023 for most people this does not fly. It's not ok, not beautiful, not romantic.
