defines the best and worst of the series
A_Different_Drummer30 December 2014
Whenever I am asked to recommend a DVD collection that you could take with you on a vacation, and watch at your leisure, at the hotel, or in the plane, I usually recommend the first two iterations of CSI (LV and Miami, until Grissom left) followed by Closer.

Alias is not top of my list because it tries to do so many things at the same time; and rarely succeeds at more than a few.

Sydney as spy/student/friend/double agent would have been more than enough for an entire season, especially showcased by Garner, who manages to shine in every scene, and hold interest for male and female viewers alike.

But that is never enough.

In this episode, which I think highlights the best and worst of the series, we have all that, plus a long-dead scientist/mystic who somehow saw the future; plus the hunt for the mole; plus the whole daddy-issues thing; plus the well-intentioned former friend of the former boyfriend who keeps messing where he shouldn't oughtaa be a-messing .... and oh wait, that's not all of it, we also have Anna, who (literally) is somehow more prescient and psychic than the infamous Rembaldi because IN EVERY SINGLE MISSION she appears in the nick of time to try to steal the prize.

See the problem? Personally, I like to think that, with Alias, JJ was in his teething stage; and, like a modern alchemist, was trying to fight the "formula" that could keep viewers' interest without treating them like morons.

The mystery of Rambaldi deepens
Tweekums29 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode it becomes clear that Rambaldi, his inventions and his prophecies are going to be of considerable significance. Sydney has three missions; first she must recover a clock that was made for Rambaldi from a laboratory in Oxford, then she must take it to the clockmaker's last living relative, who is also a clockmaker to repair it and finally after the clock is combined with the 'golden sun' a set of coordinates are revealed so she and Dixon head there. At every stage Anna Espinosa and K-Directorate are there and on each occasion things get more dangerous for Sydney! Away from the missions Sydney also has to worry about a lie detector test she is going to be put through by SD-6 and Will is taken off the story concerning Danny's murder only to find evidence that an intelligence agency was somehow involved with Eloise Kurtz.

This was a great episode; the levels of threat increased both from K-Directorate and from SD-6 internal security; Tobin Bell was great as interrogator Karl Dreyer, it was only a small role but he put in an understated and menacing performance. The other main guest star, Jack AxelRod, also did well as Giovanni Donato, the clock maker Sydney visited who might just be the same man who made the clock for Rambaldi! Will's story, which started rather slowly, has now picked up and is genuinely interesting. If all that wasn't enough Sydney finds evidence to suggest that her father was indeed a KGB agent in the '80s; I wonder what Jack's arguments for his innocence will be this time!

Anna Espinosa returns, and time is running out
gridoon202430 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Sydney is sent to Oxford to steal a clock that was made specifically for the 15th century prophet Rambaldi. Sydney's old enemy, Anna Espinosa, is on the same mission, but Syd manages to outsmart her. However, the clock does not work anymore and Sydney has to go to Italy to find the only man who can fix it. Anna and her team are again on her trail. Between missions, she also has to prepare for an extra hard lie-detector test. This is one of the best episodes so far: the writing (by Jeff Pinkner, who went on to work on "Lost" and "Fringe") is particularly good, with no fewer than THREE major cliffhangers at the end; that gorgeous Amazon Gina Torres (what a body!!!) returns in grand fashion; guest stars Tobin Bell and Jack Axelrod give outstanding performances in short roles; but perhaps most intriguing - and genre-bending - of all is the strong suggestion that the clockmaker (Axelrod) that Sydney meets in Italy may actually be 500 years old! Not only that, but he might have known that he would die as soon as he fixed that clock! As I said before, very good scripting here. *** out of 4.

The repair man said "he gave to me". What was this? Rambaldi can be alive?

Please go back to High school, or Middle school and read some history books

Really, a 15xx Rambaldi in ... Argentina? There was no such thing in this time, please stop it. How about placing the story line on Sardinia or Corsica. Unbelievable.
