This was one fine episode of "Alias", the two aspects I most enjoyed about this was Jack being a badass to save his daughter (as always) (the scene with the seven directors of CIA is a delight to watch and rewatch) and also the small but essential return of one of the most likeable characters of the show: Weiss! He is now a superior on CIA so he can do things no other contact of this team can, so it was a great callback and also justified. Thomas storyline , I believe it was a little bit confusing, I believe they wanted to make him a bad guy (kind of like Lauren) but also have his team believing he just wanted to avenge his wife's death. Thomas has always had that kind of ambiguous nature about him, I never fully believed he was a good guy. Let's see what happens. Quickly ups : Marshall and Dixon always great when they are undercover, and Rachel just keeps feeling more like "a member" of the team. 8/10 ******** Peter Shelby

Looking for a needle in a haystack

As the previous episode ended Sydney appeared to escape from her captors only to discover that they were aboard a ship. A cat and mouse game ensues between Sydney and Peyton's people and eventually Sydney finds the radio room and makes a quick call to APO before having to continue moving. Marshall receives the call but as he starts trying to track it the data is deleted. The only way this could happen is if somebody at CIA headquarters in Langley is working for Prophet Five. There is a back up at Langley but as they have no idea who the traitor is the team will have to break in and steal the data. While there it looks like they will get caught until Jack makes a call to a familiar face. With the relevant hard drive in their possession they learn that that has been erased too and only those few with the highest level of clearance could do that. Desperate to find his daughter Jack calls a meeting of those people and after discovering the traitor he questions him in a way that only Jack would do. By this time Sydney has been caught and doctors are doing something to her. If that wasn't enough we learn that one of the team is running a private investigation into another matter; initially it looks like an attempt for revenge but the ending suggests otherwise.
This was another gripping episode with a series of tense moments; the chase through the corridors of the ship were nicely claustrophobic and the theft from the CIA headquarters managed to be both tense and amusing; it was also nice to see former series regular Greg Grunberg return as Weiss. For me the highlight was Jack's exposure of the traitor at the top of the CIA and his subsequent interrogation; Jack might not employ the action packed techniques of younger team members but his cold determination is far more menacing; Victor Garber is great in the role. There are some disturbing moments when Sydney is being worked on by the doctor although this is more in the viewers mind as we don't actually see anybody doing anything obviously bad and the doctor actually claims to be helping. The twist at the end were it looks as if a team member might not be what they seem was interesting; I look forward to seeing how that turns out in future episodes.

Realizing she is being held captive on a moving freighter ship, Sydney temporarily breaks free and sends an S.O.S signal to APO. Unfortunately for her, her message is intercepted by someone in the CIA working for Prophet Five before it can reach its destination in full. Jack proposes the risky plan of breaking into the CIA headquarters to retrieve the deleted transmission, and the rest of the APO team agrees to help. Back on the ship, Sydney is captured again and prepped for a mysterious medical procedure. This is one of the lesser "Alias" episodes, definitely not as good as its predecessor ("The Horizon"), though it does have its moments. The most intriguing part is probably Tom's side story, where he uses APO resources to locate the killer of his wife, but when he goes to meet him in person, his agenda turns out to be much different than expected. Nice to see Amy Acker moved up to the main cast list, but why is Élodie Bouchez credited as a "special guest star" when she does NOT appear in this episode at all? *** out of 4.
