Incredibly lazy, generic television

You'll have to imagine all the worst TV writers in Hollywood coming together and making a show so generic its actually a little painful to watch. Its filled with horrible cliches and tropes, has no original ideas and nothing special in the acting department. Most everyone here has done much better work in the movies and they dont play such boring one dimensional standard sitcom characters. Its a shame.

The story here is the parents cant leave their kids alone so they sit with them at school. Its not only a lame premise but they cant make any good jokes to go with it.

This is pretty standard stuff from an industry that caters to an audience with no desire to break the mold and challenge their brains. Other family sitcoms like Malcom In the Middle and Modern Family would help pull out of that rut but in the meantime America had to tolerate this garbage.

If you dont like having your brain work too much this episode and the rest of series are great.

A unspectacular first episode

No pilot is completely perfect, this one certainly isn't. Thankfully from watching later episodes I know it improves.

What it does do well is set up all the major characters, and importantly for a show about a couple raising kids, establishes their relationship.

Everyone has good chemistry, and it's a show with its heart in the right place.
