Age is only a number.
Hey_Sweden25 December 2022
The Solomons are introduced to the concept of birthdays when Nina asks Dick what his birthday is, for the purpose of an office birthday list. Soon Dick learns about the pitfalls of middle age, when he falls for a sexy potential student (Lauren Graham of 'Gilmore Girls' and "Bad Santa") whom he is led to believe prefers older men.

He tries everything possible to look more youthful, of course, including dying his hair ("Oh my God, I'm GORGEOUS!!!") and wearing these *ridiculous* pants that produce some of the biggest belly laughs of the episode. Not to be outdone, Tommy is ever obsessed with the nature of human sexuality, while Sally is pretty full of herself as she considers her bodily perfection.

A very funny episode with a serious undercurrent - the theme of youth vs. Advanced age, and which should be more revered - "Dick's First Birthday" finds our whole cast in excellent form, with Harry developing an interest in "self-help" tapes. Graham is absolutely adorable, especially as she keeps uttering these cute laughs whenever Dick says anything remotely witty.

There is a cute moment near the end wherein Dick and Mary reveal their ages to each other, and some bonding begins.

How Does it Feel To Be Old, Dick?

In this episode, "Dick's First Birthday," Dick realizes that humans have birthdays thanks to Nina asking Dick for an office birthday list. He instructs his family that they need to find birthdays. The younger ones enjoy having a birthday, but Dick is a middle-aged man as he finds out-and he is not exactly jumping around with joy. His age is against him when he falls for Laurie (played by guest star Lauren Graham), so he decides to make some changes to his physical appearance.

This is another funny episode, and quite relevant too. I think it uses the theme of aging very well-and John Lithgow did very well with this material. One of my favorite moments is when both he and Mary connect with each other with they both exclaim they are 42 years old. Good stuff! As a guest cameo, Lauren Graham-a Gilmore Girl favorite, is really good!

Quote of the Episode: Dr. Mary Albright:-Dick is smitten with a new co-ed-Oh, will you act your age? Dr. Dick Solomon: What does my age have to do with it? Dr. Mary Albright: Like you didn't know. Dr. Dick Solomon: I don't know. Dr. Mary Albright: Well, I do. Dr. Dick Solomon: What are we talking about? Dr. Mary Albright: All I know is that when I was Laurie's age, I did not appreciate having middle-aged men fawn over me. Dr. Dick Solomon: You were once her age? Dr. Mary Albright: Yes, believe it or not. Dr. Dick Solomon: Very well. Not it is.

My Grade: B+

Oh my God! ... I'm *Gorgeous*!!!

That quote also describes the quality of "Dick's First Birthday," a third consecutive smash in the "3rd Rock" line-up.

Dick finally comes face-to-face with the pitfalls of aging when Nina asks him for info for an office birthday list. At first, he doesn't understand why his age matters, but soon-- very much like Dick-- he'll do anything possible to get to the front of the train... unfortunately for everyone with eyesight.

Although it features a forgettable guest spot by Lauren Graham (of the despicable show "Gilmore Girls"), "DFB" is just as clever as you'd expect an episode of a show as fine as "3rd Rock" to be.

*Destroy all the mirrors now!*
