- Barry Landes: Just, everybody breathe.
- Chloe: What's with you and the breathing? Is that your solution to everything?
- Audrey Heller Raines: [after Jack's daughter has expressed to him that she dosen't wish to see him anymore] Are you ok?
- Jack Bauer: [pause] No.
- Tony Almeida: You may not remember me, my name's Tony Almeida and this morning you killed my wife Michelle Dessler. She was my life, and you took her away, and now im gonna take yours
- Barry Landes: What does it mean that he finished so quickly?
- Chloe: I don't know.
- Barry Landes: Well, it could be a good thing, right?
- Chloe: It could be a good thing or it could be a bad thing, that's what I don't know means.
- Jack Bauer: It won't make you feel any better Tony, believe me.
- Tony Almeida: Yeah, you're probably right Jack. I'll let you know.
- Jack Bauer: This won't make you feel any better Tony, believe me.
- Tony Almeida: Yeah, you're probably right Jack. I'll let you know.
- Vice President Hal Gardner: [Over the phone] how could CTU been hit?
- Karen Hayes: We're not sure
- Vice President Hal Gardner: [Over the speakerphone as Logan sits nearby] are you telling me they didn't have any safeguards in place?
- Karen Hayes: They had partial containment but our early reports indicate forty percent of their personnel have been "taken out"
- Vice President Hal Gardner: You mean they've been killed?
- Karen Hayes: I'm afraid so sir
- Vice President Hal Gardner: CTU is protecting this city: are you saying their no longer capable of doing that?
- Karen Hayes: I'm saying they've been seriously compromised yes
- President Charles Logan: So what're going to do? We've got terrorists with nerve gas out there, who is going to stop them?
- Karen Hayes: Mr. President, I suggest an emergency restructuring
- President Charles Logan: Meaning what?
- Karen Hayes: Meaning the chemical response team will go in, neutralize the nerve gas at CTU and I will take a team in there and personally manage the operation
- Vice President Hal Gardner: [after Logan nods to him] how soon can you do that?
- Karen Hayes: Within the hour
- Vice President Hal Gardner: Fine, do it
- Lynn McGill: This is my fault
- Guard Harry Swinton: Sir?
- Lynn McGill: Someone stole my key card and used it to get into the building: it was missing and I didn't say anything
- Guard Harry Swinton: Why not?
- Lynn McGill: I thought they stole my wallet just for the money
- Guard Harry Swinton: How could you not report it?
- Lynn McGill: I was embarrassed. I didn't want anyone to know I got beat up
- Guard Harry Swinton: So we're all going to die because you were embarrassed?
- Dr. Marc Besson: [Over the speakerphone in the clinic] what's going on?
- Jack Bauer: [Over the speakerphone in the situation room] one of the terrorists infiltrated CTU and deployed a canister of Sentox nerve gas through the ventilation system: that's why we needed to seal off as many rooms as possible. I need to know if agent Burke got to medical with Henderson
- Dr. Marc Besson: Yes, he did
- Tony Almeida: Henderson's here right now?
- Jack Bauer: Tony, is that you?
- Tony Almeida: Jack, how much longer are we going to be locked down?
- Jack Bauer: Right now we're on standby, we're trying to figure out how to clean out the air supply
- President Charles Logan: CTU is still somewhat operational: it's not a complete disaster
- Vice President Hal Gardner: It is. I can see no other option right now but to impose Martial Law on the city of Los Angeles
- President Charles Logan: My military advisors believes if the military takes over the streets and starts detaining people could create mayhem
- Vice President Hal Gardner: Sir, it's only a matter of time before more canisters are released in public places and then you will have mayhem: except without the soldiers you'll need to contain it
- President Charles Logan: What do I tell the public? We've got nerve gas canisters all over the city but we don't know where they are?
- Vice President Hal Gardner: You don't have to get into that: tie it to the earlier incident at the airport
- President Charles Logan: I'm going to get resistance from all sides
- Vice President Hal Gardner: That's true, we may have to "swallow some salt water" but wouldn't it be worth it? If we can keep the people off the streets? Safe from another attack?
- President Charles Logan: I don't know
- Vice President Hal Gardner: Sir, consider this: if we clear the streets of everybody except the military, these terrorists won't be able to move as freely as they are now. We have to do what we can to stop the people behind this
- Jack Bauer: Are you ready to go back to work?
- Chloe: [Irritated] what'd you need?
- Jack Bauer: We can't break Henderson, I need you to keep trying to decrypt the files we took from his computer
- Chloe: I already tried that, it didn't work: maybe someone else can do it?
- Jack Bauer: You're the only person in the room that's qualified. Please don't shut down on me now, I'm upset about everything's that's happening too but you know things work around here: we do not quit until it's over
- Barry Landes: [Overhearing their conversation] you're not helping her, your just making things worse
- Jack Bauer: [Walks over to him] I am sure that you are qualified to help someone through this kind of distress over "an extended period of time" but you see we do not have "an extended period of time", so you don't mind stepping aside so I can do my job, I would appreciate it
- Barry Landes: Believe it or not, you don't have to be "qualified" to help people, you just have to be there for them
- Jack Bauer: Like you were there for my daughter?
- Barry Landes: What does that mean?
- Jack Bauer: Your twenty years older than she is, I know exactly what you're doing
- Barry Landes: I've done nothing but try to help her deal with her loss. How dare you accuse me of taking advantage of her
- Kim Bauer: [while Jack has his hand around his throat, choking him] dad, you can be angry with me all you want but before I met Barry, I didn't want to live, do you understand that?
- Martha Logan: [after Mike hangs up the phone with the Vice President] what was that about?
- Mike Novick: I was trying to convince Gardener to let me help him draft the President's statement
- Martha Logan: Charles is letting Hal write his statement?
- Mike Novick: [Nods] his insisted and the President gave him the "go ahead"
- Martha Logan: That means Gardener is effectively making policy decisions. You've got to stop him
- Mike Novick: I'm trying but you know what kind of pressure the President is under today: he wants all the counsel he can get and Hal's too eager to help out
- Martha Logan: His always too eager, his got his eye on the Oval Office, anything he can do to speed up Charles' downfall puts him one step closer to the Presidency
- Mike Novick: You have to intervene, Hal feeds the President ideas: you saw it at the WTO, you saw it in Chicago, and they work. Hal takes the credit for that and when they don't, the President takes the hit
- Martha Logan: You reminded Charles of that?
- Mike Novick: I can't. Hal's the Vice President, I'm just the Chief of Staff, you have influence that supersedes any Constitutional rank and now's the time to use it
- Martha Logan: I want to see the statement as soon as it's issued
- Mike Novick: You will
- Lynn McGill: [Answering the call over the speakerphone trapped in a holding room with guard Harry Swinton, with Jack patched through by Chloe] McGill here
- Jack Bauer: Lynn, it's Jack, we've found the computer for the AC control unit: now if we can shut that down in the next few minutes, we can stop the gas from permeating the safe zones
- Lynn McGill: That's good news
- Jack Bauer: The problem is you're the only person close enough to get to it, Chloe?
- Chloe: It's directly above the holding where you are now, take the stairs, go to the left, around the corner, it's the room on your left
- Lynn McGill: [Confused] ok, how are we going to do this Jack?
- Jack Bauer: Lynn, the truth is if I can get there, I would do this myself but I'm not close enough. No one who's still alive in CTU is, you're the only person who can do this. I'm going to ask you to do this without any protection. As soon as you open your door, your room will be contaminated, you can hold your breath long enough to fix the problem but we have nowhere else to send you: we can't airlock you
- Lynn McGill: There are two of us in here Jack
- Guard Harry Swinton: Sir, this is Harry Swinton, so your saying if he does this, we're both going to die?
- Jack Bauer: I'm so sorry
- Lynn McGill: [Whispers to Harry] we don't have a choice
- Guard Harry Swinton: [to Jack] how do we know you're not just making this story up? So you don't have to make the sacrifice yourself?
- Jack Bauer: You don't. All I can ask you to do is to believe me, I'm telling you the truth
- Guard Harry Swinton: Well, that's easy for you to say sir, you're not the one whose about to die
- Jack Bauer: [Angrily] it's not easy for me to say
- Lynn McGill: [Before turning off the speakerphone to talk to Harry privately] hold on
- Lynn McGill: We have to do this: we're going to die anyway. If we don't so will everyone in CTU. We have to do this
- Lynn McGill: [Turning the speakerphone back on] ok Jack, go ahead
- Jack Bauer: Once you enter the ventilation room, the computer will be on your right
- Chloe: There's a program running on the computer: you need to quit out of it, I'll take it from there
- Jack Bauer: Lynn, we don't have a lot of time
- Lynn McGill: I'll do it
- Martha Logan: [while reading the statement] "Emergency peace keeping force"
- President Charles Logan: That was Hal's suggestion, I think it works
- Martha Logan: Charles, aren't you afraid an edict of this kind can do far more damage than any chemical weapon could?
- President Charles Logan: Martha, CTU has been attacked: our first line of defense is shut down, people were killed because of this chemical weapon and that's just a prelude of what's going to happen in this city. More nerve gas will be released, I can guarantee it. Look, if you or Mike has any better ideas, please I would be glad to hear them
- Martha Logan: Mike, could we have a moment?
- Mike Novick: Certainly
- President Charles Logan: [after Mike leaves the room] what is it?
- Martha Logan: If you, Charles Logan really feel Martial Law is your only option, I will support you but I will not do is stand by and watch Hal Gardener use you to promote his own agenda
- President Charles Logan: Please, give me some credit
- Martha Logan: [Angrily] he has done it before, "he" is not the President, you are
- President Charles Logan: His doing this because it's the right thing to do. I don't know how much more of this I can take, I really don't. David's assassination, the nerve gas, the murder of those hostages, Walt Cummings betrayal, and you, I almost lost you. I didn't lose you did I?
- Martha Logan: [Seeing him become emotional and holds his hand] no, you didn't lose me, I'm still here
- Kim Bauer: I'm sorry about how I acted earlier, I mean about your friend that died
- Chloe: Thanks
- Kim Bauer: I've been wanting to ask you something: did you have contact with my dad while he was gone?
- Chloe: I sent him information about once a month
- Kim Bauer: What kind of information?
- Chloe: A lot of different things
- Kim Bauer: About me?
- Chloe: Actually almost all of it was about you. Your break up with Chase, your depression
- Kim Bauer: [Confused] how did you get...?
- Chloe: [Interrupts her] I'm really good at getting information. I don't judge it, I just pass it on. I'm sorry about you and Chase: it must've been very painful
- Kim Bauer: Yeah it was. So you talked to him too?
- Chloe: Chase? No?
- Kim Bauer: Do you know where he is?
- Chloe: No, but I can find out if you want?
- Kim Bauer: No, it's alright. Barry thinks I should let that go, his probably right
- Chloe: Yeah, well shrinks are always giving they probably don't follow themselves
- Kim Bauer: How are you doing?
- Chloe: This morning I woke up with a guy in my bed I'll probably never see again and I just watched one of my best friends die right in front of me so I guess not that great
- Jack Bauer: As soon as the barriers go up, I want you to over to Medical: let them check you out
- Kim Bauer: No, when the barriers go up, I'm leaving
- Jack Bauer: Please just do this for me. We still need to talk
- Kim Bauer: There's nothing to talk about
- Jack Bauer: Don't be such a hurry to cut me off
- Kim Bauer: You cut me off. Listen to me, I'm not angry, I love you, there's nothing left to say except I don't want to be around you: every time I am something horrible happens, people die. I know that's not your fault but I can't be a part of it
- Jack Bauer: I don't want you to be a part of that, all I want is one day you and I to be able to spend time together. I gave you up once, I'm not going to let that happen again
- Kim Bauer: [Before leaving] I can't
- Karen Hayes: [after hanging up a call with Bill] how's your progress?
- Miles Papazian: [while using his laptop computer] good, I've already reformatted their main servers to ours: all their tactical protocols will have to go through me. I may have to replace some of their personnel with my people, do you have a problem with that?
- Karen Hayes: Absolutely not. After what these people's been through most of them won't be working at full capacity. We need to identify these people quickly and send them home
- Miles Papazian: What about chain of command? If I going to need approval from Bill Buchanan if I want to make a personnel change?
- Karen Hayes: No, Bill won't be in charge when we get there: I will. For all intents and purposes, CTU is no longer an operational entity. It's a building with workers who will report to us
