- Michelle Dessler: The situation with the Consulate is dragging us down: we shouldn't be diverting resources away from finding that warhead
- Tony Almeida: Hopefully this will just be a formality and get rid of him quickly. If we don't get information from Lee, Audrey's husband will have died for nothing
- Michelle Dessler: What is she still doing here?
- Tony Almeida: I think she wants stay busy so she won't have to think about it
- Michelle Dessler: It's funny when I met Audrey this afternoon, it seemed like she and Jack were totally together. A few hours later, everything's changed
- Tony Almeida: [Holds her hand] I hate being without you
- Michelle Dessler: I never wanted it to be this way
- David Palmer: [Over the phone] CTU tells me you got something from Lee?
- Jack Bauer: We have a location on Habib Marwan, we're on route with tactical teams now. We're hopeful we can put an end to this soon.
- David Palmer: I hope you're right, this warhead can detonate at any moment.
- Jack Bauer: We all know that sir.
- David Palmer: Tell me about the representative from the Chinese consulate, is he still at CTU?
- Jack Bauer: He was there when we left.
- David Palmer: Are we 'OK" there?
- Jack Bauer: They have a surveillance photo of one of my team members. We told him the photo wasn't clear enough to be conclusive evidence. It's going to hold them off for a while.
- David Palmer: I see, Thanks Jack.
- Jack Bauer: Thank you Mr. President.
- Mike Novick: [Over the phone] you got anything out of Mr. Lee yet?
- Jack Bauer: No, his still in surgery
- Mike Novick: How's that coming along?
- Jack Bauer: Not great but his hanging in there
- Mike Novick: I don't have to tell you we took a huge risk getting this guy and the assumption he can help us find the nuclear warhead
- Jack Bauer: Trust me, I know
- Mike Novick: We also have a new "situation"
- Jack Bauer: What is it?
- Mike Novick: When we broke into the Chinese Consulate, Koo Yin, the Consul was shot
- Jack Bauer: That's not possible: my men did not fire their weapons
- Mike Novick: Then he was accidently hit by one of their own people
- Jack Bauer: How badly was he hurt?
- Mike Novick: He died
- Jack Bauer: Oh my God
- Mike Novick: I want you to talk to the members of your team: make sure each one of them has an alibi for where they were during the ambush
- Jack Bauer: Ok
- Mike Novick: This is an extremely incendiary situation, I'm about to talk to President Palmer now. We're trying to avoid a serious confrontation with China
- Jack Bauer: [Before hanging up] we'll handle it from here, thanks
- Cheng Zhi: [Over the phone] I'm sure your office is aware of the incident that happened here earlier tonight?
- Michelle Dessler: Yes, we are very sorry to hear about it: is there anything we can do to help?
- Cheng Zhi: I would like to come over and discuss this matter with you
- Michelle Dessler: Of course, my office will be more than glad to make an appointment with you in the morning
- Cheng Zhi: No, I need to do this right now
- Michelle Dessler: I'm afraid that's impossible: you must know we're in the middle of a national security crisis
- Cheng Zhi: The murder of a Chinese consul on Chinese soil could be construed as an act of war
- Michelle Dessler: What does that have to do with us?
- Cheng Zhi: I believe your agency stormed the Consulate and kidnapped Lee Jong
- Michelle Dessler: That is an outrageous accusation
- Cheng Zhi: Just an hour earlier, your government called and asked for permission to speak to Lee Jong: thirty minutes later, we were attacked. It is unlikely these two events are unrelated
- Michelle Dessler: I'm sorry, I can't help you
- Cheng Zhi: I suggest you cooperate "voluntarily." Otherwise, I'll be forced to go above you on this
- Michelle Dessler: I'm sure you'll do what you have to. I mean no disrespect but I do have to get back to work
- Cheng Zhi: Very well, you'll be hearing from me soon
- Jack Bauer: [Talking privately] listen up, the Chinese consul was shot and killed during Lee's extraction
- Curtis Manning: How? We never got a shot off
- Jack Bauer: I know, I know. It must've been friendly fire, we've got to make sure all of our alibis cross check. No one outside of this operation is to know we were anywhere near the Chinese Consulate understood?
- Howard Bern: [to Jack] what's going to happen? Are we going to be brought in on this?
- Jack Bauer: I don't know yet: all I do know is now the Consul's been killed, everything has changed. It's our responsibility the United States government is never implicated in this operation
- Curtis Manning: [to Jack] don't worry, everyone here gets it
- Jack Bauer: [to Curtis] ok, you advise the rest of the team
- Curtis Manning: You got it
- Mike Novick: How long are going to keep the President "in the dark"? Eventually his going to find out you authorized the raid on the Chinese Consulate
- David Palmer: We have to keep it from him as long as we can: were you able to find Jack?
- Mike Novick: Yes, his back to CTU. The man they grabbed at the Consulate lee Jong, is still in surgery
- David Palmer: Was he able to tell us anything about the missing warhead?
- Mike Novick: No
- David Palmer: What did Jack have to say about the Chinese consul's death?
- Mike Novick: It wasn't our people that fired the shot
- David Palmer: The Chinese won't care: he died as a result of our trespass. We have to start constructing a "scenario" that doesn't implicate the United States government
- Mike Novick: They must know we did this. We called the Consulate about Lee Jong half an hour before the abduction
- David Palmer: The Chinese don't want a confrontation anymore than we do. If we can create a "scenario" of plausible deniability, they may play along
- Mike Novick: How do we do that?
- David Palmer: Call CTU: have them find out which anti-Chinese factions have attacked their embassies or Consulates in the last five years
- Mike Novick: Most of these groups you're talking about Asian extremists. I'm sure Bauer's team is predominately American
- David Palmer: Bauer's team was masked. No one saw their faces
- Jack Bauer: COMM just confirmed the data we got from Marci: thank you
- Audrey Raines: You're welcome
- Jack Bauer: You should get some rest
- Audrey Raines: With everything that's going on, I can't
- Jack Bauer: You can go back to the hotel
- Audrey Raines: [Stands up from her desk] please don't tell me what to do
- Audrey Raines: [after he sadly looks at her] what? What do you want from me? You made a choice that killed Paul and I'm trying to deal with it. We both have a job, let's just do it
- Tony Almeida: Michelle says the head of security for the Chinese Consulate just called
- Jack Bauer: What?
- Tony Almeida: He made it sound like he has evidence linking CTU to the abduction of Lee
- Jack Bauer: What kind of evidence?
- Tony Almeida: He didn't say but he wants to come down here and talk to us
- Jack Bauer: They don't have any evidence: their bluffing. We don't have time to deal with them right now
- Tony Almeida: I agree but we don't have much choice, I need you to help me figure out how to deal with this
- Jack Bauer: I need you to check on Lee's condition first and I'll get back to you
- Mike Novick: CTU just sent this over: these five groups have all made attempts to attack or sabotage Chinese targets around the globe in the last two year, this group here
- David Palmer: The People's Freedom Coalition
- Mike Novick: They've actually made speeches where they've referenced Lee Jong's involvement with the Chinese nuclear program
- David Palmer: So an attack on the Consulate and the grab of Lee Jong by this group would be plausible?
- Mike Novick: It would allow the Chinese to save face
- David Palmer: And if the Chinese can't provide proof that we entered the Consulate saving face would be all they need?
- Mike Novick: If you want I can start leaking it to the media
- David Palmer: Do it
- President Charles Logan: [after entering the room] David, what've you done?
- David Palmer: Excuse me Sir?
- President Charles Logan: I just got a call from the Secretary of State telling me about a covert action against the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles?
- David Palmer: That's correct, I sanctioned it
- President Charles Logan: Why would you have done such a thing?
- David Palmer: It was the only option at the time
- President Charles Logan: Don't you know how fragile our relationship with China is right now? You authorized an attack on their Consulate: that's a military engagement
- David Palmer: A covert not dissimilar to those carried out by countries on a routine basis around the world
- President Charles Logan: Don't give me a social studies lesson, we marched onto Chinese soil, we kidnapped one of their nationals, and in the process the Chinese consul was killed
- Mike Novick: We were unlucky Sir
- President Charles Logan: Unlucky? Yeah I would say we were unlucky, that's the kind of thing that could start a war. Now how am I supposed to be able to find terrorists while I'm provoking a nuclear superpower?
- David Palmer: I would advise you to calm down if we are going to get through this day. We didn't bring this crisis on ourselves but we're going to be the ones to settle it, this is a dirty business and we're to have to get our hands dirty to clean it up. Now please Mr. President, you brought me here to help you: let me do it
- Cheng Zhi: [after Bill introduces Cheng to Jack] of course I know of Mr. Bauer: from his previous service to this country. We knew you were in Los Angeles today, when did you arrive?
- Jack Bauer: Few in a few days ago with Secretary Heller
- Cheng Zhi: I assume Secretary Heller is still here?
- Jack Bauer: No, for security reasons, his at our District office
- Cheng Zhi: Why aren't you with him?
- Jack Bauer: We felt under the circumstances today, I could be more helpful here at CTU with Bill
- Cheng Zhi: That's odd
- Jack Bauer: Not really, as you know I used run this office
- Cheng Zhi: So if there's anyone "capable" of leading a covert operation on short notice, you would be the ideal candidate
- Bill Buchanan: Mr. Cheng, this kind of...
- Jack Bauer: [Interrupts him] it's alright Bill, I've got it. Mr. Cheng, I can assure you that neither CTU nor I had anything to do with the terrible events that took place at your Consulate tonight
- Cheng Zhi: [after taking out a printed photo from his briefcase] I assume you know this man? Howard Bern: one of your field agents, this was taken by one of our surveillance cameras tonight
- Jack Bauer: [while looking at the photo] this photograph has been altered
- Cheng Zhi: Just to make it clearer
- Jack Bauer: Or set up a scenario that you can utilize for political propaganda?
- Cheng Zhi: No Mr. Bauer, we ran this image through our database, the computer picked Mr. Bern as a "near perfect match"
- Jack Bauer: Did you take the time to cross reference your database to include members of the People's Freedom Coalition? Because according to our information, their the group most likely behind this attack
- Cheng Zhi: That would be pointless, wouldn't it? This man is not Asian
- Jack Bauer: Mr. Cheng, you and I both know that the PFC has initiated terrorist activities around the globe. Utilizing European mercenaries: half a dozen which are a closer match to this photograph than Agent Bern
- Cheng Zhi: I take it Mr. Bern is not available to question?
- Bill Buchanan: No, his not here tonight
- Cheng Zhi: Of course
- Bill Buchanan: Mr. Cheng, you must know it will not be in America's best interest to provoke the Chinese government
- Cheng Zhi: Then what're we playing these games for? Thirty minutes before we were asked our Consul to give up Lee Jong, and before our government can comply, the Consulate was attacked, Lee Jong disappears. Howard Bern is not available to be questioned, what are you trying to hide?
- President Charles Logan: [after entering Mike enters his office] what is it?
- Mike Novick: The Chinese security officer Cheng is still at CTU and seems to be slowing things down
- President Charles Logan: He wouldn't have been there at all: if Palmer hadn't authorized an attack at the Consulate
- Mike Novick: It's too late to change that now Sir
- President Charles Logan: Yes, it is. If we order Cheng to leave CTU now, it'll look like we've got something to hide, and it'll just be giving the Chinese all the justification they need to escalate this crisis
- Mike Novick: If we don't find that warhead before its deployed ten million Americans could face annihilation
- President Charles Logan: We could at war with a billion Chinese
- Mike Novick: My advice Sir is to worry about the Americans now and the Chinese later
- President Charles Logan: Your advice? Or David Palmer's advice?
- Mike Novick: Both of ours
- President Charles Logan: When I agreed to bring Palmer in, it wasn't so the two of you could form an alliance against me
- Mike Novick: Sir, that's not what's happening
- President Charles Logan: No? Why don't you tell me what's "happening"? You and David Palmer are running this country while I'm taking phone calls from mid-level staffers
- Mike Novick: Would you like me to ask President Palmer to leave?
- President Charles Logan: No, call CTU, tell Bill Buchanan to escort Mr. Cheng out of the building
- Curtis Manning: [Briefing CTU staff on a monitor] the warhead was stolen here: in eastern Iowa, we don't know yet how it's being transported
- Bill Buchanan: Are we monitoring air traffic?
- Curtis Manning: Yes, so far nothing's been picked up
- Tony Almeida: If they have to stay on the ground, how far could they have gone?
- Curtis Manning: Based on our latest information, a three hundred mile radius which includes three metropolitan cities
- Tony Almeida: Have those cities been alerted?
- Bill Buchanan: The President wants to keep that information restricted for the time being
- Curtis Manning: We have raised local alert levels, we haven't mentioned specifics
- Bill Buchanan: Marwan and his people have control of a nuclear warhead. We have to figure out when and where he'll set it off. I want you to look at everything: from satellite to local police, we have a small window. It's still in the middle of the night, if Marwan leaves a trail, it's going to be a hell of a lot easier to follow it now than in two hours when people start going to work. Let's get to it
- Bill Buchanan: Tell me the latest on Lee?
- Tony Almeida: He just got out of surgery: Dr. Besson thinks he'll be able to respond to questions soon
- Bill Buchanan: [Before entering Michelle's office] alright, when that happens, I want everyone from COMM on standby. Whatever Lee gives us I want it worked up without any time lags
- Michelle Dessler: [after hanging up the phone] that was Secretary of State Taylor: he just authorized the head of security at the Chinese Consulate to come here and question us about the raid
- Tony Almeida: What? In the middle of all this?
- Bill Buchanan: Alright, this breaks down very simply, they want to prove we attacked the Consulate tonight, we have to make sure they can't do that
- Tony Almeida: That ambush is going to land on someone
- Bill Buchanan: Mike Novick's working on that from Washington. We just have to make sure all of our bases are covered over here. Finding that nuclear warhead is our number one priority. I'm going to go over the strategy with Jack, when Cheng gets here, send him to the situation room, make sure all of our visible screens are masked
- Jack Bauer: [to Agent Rabb, referring to Lee Jong] tell him his in critical condition: he still needs medical attention, I'm going to ask him a few questions. When he answers them, I'll let the doctor continue to treat him
- Melissa Rabb: [after translating for Lee Jong] he understands
- Jack Bauer: Tell him I know he worked with Marwan on the warhead, now he needs to tell us where it is
- Melissa Rabb: [after translating for Lee Jong] he doesn't know, but he knows where Marwan might be
- Jack Bauer: What'd you mean "might be"? In the van he said he knew where he was
- Melissa Rabb: [after translating for Lee Jong] because of what his doing, Marwan's been moving around
- Jack Bauer: Where?
- Melissa Rabb: [after translating for Lee Jong] there are three locations he knows of where Marwan's using today
- Jack Bauer: What are they?
- Melissa Rabb: The Rockland Building
- Jack Bauer: We know about that one
- Melissa Rabb: A bar downtown
- Jack Bauer: We know about that one too
- Melissa Rabb: A factory on 6th
- Jack Bauer: Where on 6th?
- Melissa Rabb: [after translating for Lee Jong] 6th and Alameda
- Jack Bauer: Give me an exact address: that's the one we're looking for
- David Palmer: We're going to need you to advise the President that Cheng has to leave CTU now
- Mike Novick: President Logan was clear he wanted Cheng to have full access there
- David Palmer: And he has. Now Cheng's slowing them down. His got to go, CTU needs to be to do their job without the added pressure of a cover up. You think Logan will sign off on that?
- Mike Novick: I'll see what I can do
- Cheng Zhi: [Before Bill enters the room] I am surprised after you were kidnapped, that you stayed on to work here: that must have been very difficult for you
- Audrey Raines: Well, I wasn't physically hurt and I wanted to try and help find the people who planned these attacks
- Cheng Zhi: Very admirable, I looked through the hourly's for Mr. Bauer, your associate from the Defense Department. I noticed from 1am to 3 am, you and he were working on some data processing tasks?
- Audrey Raines: Yes, that's correct
- Audrey Raines: And what analyst did you give this information to?
- Audrey Raines: Edgar Stiles: why does that matter?
- Cheng Zhi: They go through all this trouble to re-enlist a man who used to run this place, Jack Bauer, and his doing data processing?
- Audrey Raines: Well, it's much more subtle than it sounds. There are hundreds of lists that have to be cross referenced, and with Mr. Bauer's experience, we were able to narrow the search
- Cheng Zhi: I am surprised
- Audrey Raines: Why's that?
- Cheng Zhi: I mean no disrespect, the log shows that your husband Paul Raines was at the clinic at the same hours and unfortunately he passed away
- Audrey Raines: What's your point?
- Cheng Zhi: I don't believe you were with Jack Bauer mining data, that you were waiting for your husband while he was in surgery, and that you're lying to me now to cover for Mr. Bauer
- Bill Buchanan: Mr. Cheng, I'm not going to stand there and allow you to accuse my people of lying
- Cheng Zhi: No and I'm not going to stand here to endure "half baked" alibis
- Audrey Raines: You can believe whatever you want: my answers stand. Now if we are done I do have to get back to work, if you will excuse me
