Containing The Disease
ccthemovieman-125 May 2007
Chappelle's body is taken by three masked men and Bauer is told not to follow, or the virus will be released.

Meanwhile, the President is under a bit of fire after telling higher ups what is going on, and that he decided to comply with the terrorist's demands. That terrorist, Saunders, threatens to release two vials in big cities if he doesn't get a list of about 45 U.S. spies.

Meanwhile, C.T.U. gets a lead on Saunders' daughter, a student in Santa Barbara, and sends Kim up there to impersonate her so that a switch can be made and the terrorist daughter can be interrogated to see if she knows the whereabouts of her father.

The worst part is that the man who escaped from the Chandler Hotel is spreading the disease around but at least he has been located at the ER of an area hospital. However, he came in contact with people in the drug store and with some ER patients who left. The race is on to find them before a full-scale epidemic occurs.

The ending dramatics involve Kim trying to impersonate Saunders' daughter.

The next demand
Tweekums17 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After the shocking conclusion to the previous episode we learn that Ryan Chappelle is indeed dead; there were no tricks involved Jack really did kill him! Looking into the work he was doing points to regular payments being made by Saunders; he has a daughter and she lives right there in Los Angeles. With this lead they decide that they will question her to determine if she knows where her father might be. The problem is they are certain that Saunders will have somebody watching her so they will have to find a way of replacing her with a look-alike while the questioning goes ahead. There is only one person at CTU Los Angeles that looks enough like her to take the role… Kim Bauer. She accepts the task against her father's objections. Meanwhile the infected man who left the hotel has turned up at a local hospital although he has had contact with people along the way so it is quite possible that the virus is in the open. As if that wasn't enough for one episode we learn what Saunders' next demand is… he expects the president to disclose the identities of all foreign nationals acting as agents for the United States; a demand he surely can not give into.

This was another gripping episode; when I first watched it I suspected that they may have used some ruse so that Chappelle wasn't really dead; while on the one hand I was sad to see the character go I was pleased that the creators hadn't taken the easy way out. By ordered Chappelle's death the president has demonstrated that he will give in to terrorism. The plot involving Saunders' daughter was interesting as it put Kim in danger; not because she was just caught up in events like in previous series but because she close to put herself there. The scenes after the switch had a decent level of tension as the CTU agents watching the scene didn't know which of the people in the area were working for Saunders. As always the acting was pretty solid and the action was well paced and the scenes switched at just the right time to keep the tension high.

New demands and inconveniences
MaxBorg899 September 2008
Usually, when a major character dies in a TV show, the episode that takes place immediately after-wards is a little more laid-back, so that everyone can relax. Does this happen on 24? No way. The moment Ryan Chappelle (Paul Sculze) is on the ground, shot in the head by Jack Bauer, three men arrive to collect the body and instruct Jack not to follow them.

Such a dramatic start serves merely the function of setting the tone: after the disposal of the corpse, Saunders calls President Palmer with a new request: if he isn't given a complete list of American agents working abroad, two vials of the virus will be released. While Palmer informs his cabinet of the situation, Jack finds out that Saunders has a daughter, Jane, who goes to college in Santa Barbara. The plan is to replace her with someone from CTU and use her to find the terrorist. Who's gonna do the switch? Why, that would be Kim, actually. In addition, Chase tracks down the infected man who escaped from the hotel.

This episode works on two races against the clock: one to replace Jane Saunders in time to put an end to all of the day's threats, one to find the potentially dangerous hotel guest. These tow situations are inter-cut to great dramatic effect, with more emphasis on the first plot strand, given that will play a bigger part in the last five episodes of the season. Gratifyingly enough, that section of the narrative also gives Elisha Cuthbert something really substantial to do after just sitting around for eighteen hours (not that she was doing a bad job, it's just nice to see her take part in the action again).

The job gets personal
Mr-Fusion8 May 2017
There's no shying away from the usual high-dose action here, but it's great to see some genuine espionage. Using Kim to stand in for Saunders' kid adds some nice tension as Jack has to send his child out into the field. There's a great scene with Kiefer Sutherland channeling his impotent rage when the decision is made without his input. And it speaks volumes that this is the real meat of the episode, even as CTU's scrambling to contain the outbreak.

This wrings plenty of residual drama out of Chapelle's death in the opening moments, but it keeps the pulse pounding til the very end.

Kim Under Cover
Hitchcoc21 January 2019
KIm Bauer offers to go on a decoy mission. Saunders' daughter lives and goes to school in LA. Once CTU knows this, they use a wig and makeup to put Kim in this girls' place. There is surveillance on the girl and the idea is to make it look like she is fine while they kidnap her. Other plot elements involve a man who has contracted the virus but who left the hotel after a one night stand before the perimeters could be established. He may have contaminated a host of people. The President continues to get more demands from Saunders. The sad part of this is that so many people are losing their lives in the most awful way.
