Good hearted, glossy comedy with a solid cast
DVD_Connoisseur5 January 2007
The pilot for "Ugly Betty" is warm-hearted and humorous entertainment. Fast moving, engaging and funny, this first instalment bodes well for the future.

The cast is excellent. As well as the great America Ferrera, the show stars Alan (Jim Robinson from "Neighbours"!) Dale, the simply gorgeous Vanessa Williams as the evil Wilhelmina Slater, and Eric Mabius as Daniel Meade.

As purely a side-note, there are many attractive actresses in this production that are sure to attract hot-blooded males who wouldn't normally watch this type of show!

"Ugly Betty" looks a million dollars and is a breath of fresh air. Looking forward to seeing where this show goes as it has a lot of potential...

a very promising show

I think this show is on a different level than the other shows. It shows loyalty and courage in face of difficulty. Betty is an interesting character and she makes you love her for herself. She has strong positive qualities which come out in the show. I think that this show will touch many people and will have many surprising affects. young girls will see that the beautiful people are not always the most gifted. Honesty and loyalty does pay. I think they could do allot with the show at least for a year or so. The show can relate to experiences that people had in their lives. I haven missed one episode yet.I look forward to seeing where they go with this in the days to come. Angela Tirone from Staten Island, NY

Queens Pride! Betty is a winner! Gracias Salma!

Warning: Spoilers
This show was excellent, hysterical, charming, wonderful! As someone who is originally from Queens, NY (I know where those houses are! Right by where my Grandma used to live!) and has worked in the magazine industry - Ugly Betty was right on target!

The show is an absolute winner! Many of my friends are saying how much they loved it!

I loved the nephew and thought it was totally funny that Salma showed up in an unexpected way!

The characters are all fantastic!

Brava America! Brava Salma!

Ugly Betty is First Class-But tone down the "Hispanism"
elskootero29 November 2006
First off, let me say that I LOVE Ugly Betty! It's funny; interesting; and extremely well-acted. America Ferrera is an academy-award winning actor,as is virtually the entire cast - They gel perfectly with one another. But WHY are so many people making a big deal out of her ethnicity? Why are so many Hispanics going on and on and on about Ms. Ferrera being "one of them", when they should just applaud her amazing abilities as an actor? If it's wrong to denigrate someone because of their ethnic persuasion, why isn't just as silly to make a point of it? Ms.Ferrera is very funny, but it has nothing to do with her being Hispanic---SHE'S JUST FUNNY! THE SHOW IS FUNNY! And by the way, it's nice, as well, unlike so many shows today- it's funny without the filth. And in a comedic way, you sensitive types! Let's just close with the fact that I love the show and hope that it's on for many, many seasons. GO BETTY!!!!

It's like Sex and the City meets The Devil Wears Prada
l_rod525885 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
It's OK, but as my comment title suggests, it's not really original. I'll keep watching it, because I'm not sure WHAT to think about it, but I think that after watching 2 or 3 more episodes, I'll make up my mind. I saw the Colombian soap, and it was great. Way better than this, that's for sure. But really, the title of my comment says it all. The pilot had prostitutes, sexy women, a demanding editor-in-chief, bitchy, dumb women, the nice not-to-hot women, a gay little brother, and Betty is running around like Anne Hathaway, buying coffee for her boss and what not, missing a loved one's birthday, and doing anything to please her boss, like dressing like a prostitute for a photo shoot. Not original AT ALL.

Great show!

Warning: Spoilers
I have loved this show ever since the very first episode. It's funny and the concept is finally something fresh. The characters are all so different and the actors are incredible to watch. America Ferrera and Vanessa Williams are both hilarious as the villain and the innocent do gooder who won't take no for an answer. I think that maybe I could do for just a little less of the Father and his drama and focus on the rest of the cast like finding a love interest for Betty's sister or the seamstress. I also think that Betty should dump the shrimp for the hot nerd from accounting after all he did dump her for the freak up the street.

I liked it!
theteenaweena29 September 2006
I didn't think I would, but decided to watch it after I found out who the actor was who played the title role...America Ferrara, who starred in "Real Women Have Curves". She was also in "The Sisterhood Of the Traveling Pants."

Also in the show were Vanessa Williams, and Gina Gershon (I didn't recognize her, although she looked familiar. I had to come here to get the cast list to figure out who she was).

I don't think it'll do well against the other networks (I was over watching My Name Is Earl and The Office on Thursday), but I hope they continue to run it on ABC Family Friday nights. I'll be tuning in again. It's very well produced, and not schlocky, and thank God there's no dumb laugh track.

Ugly Betty Rocks
tashashane318 January 2007
I really liked this show. I think that it is a great inspiration for people who are not as beautiful on the outside as a lot of people, but their beauty lies on the inside. When I saw the first episode I was like what is this girl thinking. She was out of her environment, but then as the show went on, I found myself rooting for her. I really like the show and I hope that it stays around for a really long time. There is a few things that I would like to see though. I would like to see Betty transform throughout the show. Not dramatic or anything, but just a little here and a little there. I would also like to see her and Daniel get together. Ugly Betty is an inspiration to all. I make sure that I am at home at 8pm on Thursday nights to watch the show. If for some reason I don't get to watch it then sometimes I can catch it on the soap net.

Ugly Betty is the best new show this season!
joeyorocio13 October 2006
I absolutely adored this show! Talk about a true heroine to root for... Betty is it! I challenge anyone to give this show a chance and they will surely find something to love about it. There are many shows that have the same theme out there(law, medicine, etc.) so this show gives a not only a fresh storyline but a fresh face and personality that you will not find in any other show. I'm glad there are no other shows out there like Betty's because it makes it stand out even more. Some of the characters are so far out there that you know that there are people like them that actually exist. I've laughed at each episode so far and I look forward to the rest of the season as each show makes me want to see more. To the creators and producers... a standing ovation!

Ugly Betty a million Thumbs Up!!!!!!!
liliamet7830 September 2006
It was great, funny, charming and ean entertaining show. Although I grew watching telenovelas I lost connection with this TV genre since 1995. Telenovelas are a short version of our US Daytime Soap Opera; however they are shorter time wise. The first time I visited US was in 1975, they were showing All My Children, General Hospital etc. I moved to the mainland in 1982 and they were showing the same soap operas and it is still 2006 and those shows are still going. Who has the time to watch and follow 30 years plus soap opera? The Latin American soap operas although they can be cheesy they only last 3 months; they can go from the sublime to the ridiculous but they are entertaining. I though Ugly Betty would be another telenovela. But Ugly Betty is really an excellent show. America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) she is a great actress, she brings a lot of our Hispanic passion to Ugly Betty. It was hilarious seeing Salma HayeK on a Mexican soap opera on Ugly Betty's TV. I liked the touch of the Guadalajara poncho, It's Salma's sublime message to tell us that Ugly Betty is a Mexican American living in Queens, not a Puerto Rican, Dominican which represent the majority of Hispanics in New York City. I'm Puerto Rican and I'm elated with Salma Hayek successes in Hollywood like in Frida, and In the Time of the Butterflies. Bravo Salma!!! Well Done ..Te la comiste..I'm very proud of you. You are bringing our Latin Culture to Prime TV..It's not a drama show like Law and Order show but is a good start.

Why Should She?
roshambo18721 January 2007
Asking America Ferrer to stop being Hispanic or stop making a big deal of it is like asking Brad Pitt to stop being White. How many successful Latinas are in Hollywood in comparison to Whites? Let Latinos have their time to be proud about Ms. Ferrer's accomplishments and stop trying to make everyone conform. Latinos have different ways than Whites, than Blacks, than Asians and instead of judging them and asking them to be like the dominant culture, you should celebrate the differences, because there are differences that set us apart. It doesn't mean they are better or worse---just different and that is what is going to finally add true diversity to Hollywood.
