Small budget ... gem of a movie .........
merklekranz21 December 2009
Surprisingly entertaining micro-budget black comedy. It's a diamond heist film, with acceptable acting, interesting characters, darkly humorous situations and dialog, noir-like double crosses, blackmail, murder, bad cops, stupid criminals, and a gratuitous sex scene. What more could you ask for in such an entertaining gem, no pun intended, of a movie. In addition to all of the above, there is some blood and guts thrown into the mix, but it's all part of the fun. To say "8 of Diamonds" exceeds expectations, would be a huge understatement. Definitely has re-watch ability and potential cult status. Recommended - MERK

Very Watchable Movie for the budget
themoviedeal7 March 2008
The budget on this movie was super low, you can tell, but the filmmakers did a great job. Eric Roberts (Pope of Grenwich Village, Runaway Train) is cool in his role, there are a lot of twists and turns as with the detective movies of days gone buy. It was good to see Tim Kazurinski (from Saturday night Live, Police Acadamy), I haven't seen him for a while. Don Gibb (Revenge of the Nerds!) was good in his role as well.

As I mentioned above, the film mirrors the detective movies of old, where the dialog and story drag you through the mystery, as opposed to relying on car chases and big gunfights. If your in the mood for a limited budget indie that was obviously made with TLC...

I'M DISMAYED
nogodnomasters9 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
My sincere apologies for giving a 4 star Eric Roberts film, 8 stars, but I really did enjoy the film. Three thieves steal a diamond. Fat Anthony (Manny Sosa) gets shot and killed while the other two escape. Fat Anthony ate the diamond. Later at the morgue, one of the two robbers gets caught attempting to retrieve said diamond and does hard time. The film then moves on to a question of who has the diamond, a cheating wife, a set up, and a private detective taking pictures of the whole thing.

The film was designed, at least partly, to be a comedy, but the lines that fail are funny at the attempt of being funny...like a four year old putting on her mommy's make-up. She can't do it correctly, but you laugh at the attempt. The scenes of Eric Roberts driving in the vintage Corvette were funny as it was one of those deal where the car never moves with him behind the wheel, just the scenery.

The plots twists like a 60's who-dun-it comedy. The dialogue was horrible in a funny way.

Guide: F-bomb. Brief sex and nudity.
