Sweet trip down memory lane.
jonijr22 March 2006
Cute adaption of the stories I remember my mother reading me. The stories remain true to memory, but the dialect was absent which kind of ruined it a little bit for me. DVD quality was excellent. Both my children ages 4 and 14 both had their attentions held on the screen. The colorful scenes held the young ones and Brer rabbit's tricks kept the older kids watching for whats next. The extra DVD games were a little difficult for the younger children but fun for the older set. A fun story to watch with the kids. I just felt it was missing something I couldn't quite put my finger on. I recommend seeing this just not highly. A good rental!

Alright but not Extraordinary

Warning: Spoilers
Delightful film about a familiar mischievous, clever but "adorable" rabbit.

It was good, but not great. Then again for most of us who grew up in the 80's, or earlier, the version from Soung of the South, still holds a place in memory lane and a beloved character. They kind of made him sound too young, would've been good to see a human interact with the animals a bit more (Then again it's because I'm an animal lover) but we got to see other new critters n songs that were catchy.

But liked the film anyway very "cute". Especially when the listener who see in tha start meets the hero in the end.

This is no song of Brer Rabbit
Frekman3 July 2006
Having a copy of "Song of the South" which this is the politically correct replacement for, I was truly disappointed with this. "Song of the South" is not that great a movie by todays technical standards, but in its day it was revolutionary in the merging of animation and real actors. The Adventures of Brer Rabbit is nothing but modern politically correct trash. The Adventures of Brer Rabbit, which some people may find offensive to their own spiritual belief systems today, lacks any basis in the folk tales of a group of Americans that was part of our heritage. Those folk tales were the story of Brer Rabbit, not this politically correct enhanced trash.

That story (Song of the South) is a part of our history, for better or worse. Slavery, as well as the way the Black actors of Song of the South were treated in Atlanta at the time of Oscar Awards was terrible beyond belief. Anyone today who believes singing happy slaves were a way of life in the old south is an idiot. But America is not the only nation with a history of slavery. Most nations of the world have that practice in their history, some still do today. Stop beating ourselves up over it, and pretending it never existed.

The history of the native American people is an even greater horror story. Some of it caused intentionally by Europeon immigrants to the Americas. Some of it just twists of fate that befell them in the collision of 2 cultures. But what a horror story that is.

Films weren't always based in total reality back when Song of the South was made, neither are they today. But the rewriting of our historical make believe films smacks of another film/story "1984".

Don't tease the people with this stuff, re-release the original movie where Brer Rabbit was made a star "Song of the South".

Watered Down Insulting PC version!
bdhman775 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Having a Promotional Homo Video Original Copy of Disney's 'Song Of The South' from 1995, and having read all of the books of Joel Chandler Harris, all I can say is this is JUNK.

This is totally computerized, Politically Correct, Feminist approved, National Association for the Advancement of "Cheesy" People approved-- yes my opinion of that organization, which unfairly and unjustly smeared the original Disney classic WITHOUT ANY OF ITS MEMBERS EVER ACTUALLY SEEING THE FILM IN ITS ENTIRETY.

And Yes I can say that about them because I am Black Myself. Father is a Black Man from Trinidad, Mother from Venezuela. Currently I live in Trinidad.

#1. As with almost anything Hollywood makes today, it's all about the Girls coming of Age, and let's just forget about Boys ever becoming of age.

#2. The fact that the 'Gullah' accent or the Historical Southern African-American dialect is absent from the Characters, which is a BIG BIG dis-service and injustice to both Harris' books and the Disney Classic makes it BORING & LAME. Because with the accent, the stories LOSE A HUGE PART OF THEIR ESSENCE. And Artistically speaking, Animated Characters are much much more fun and more interesting to watch when they speak with an accent.

It was like having the stories TRANSLATED from Gullah to Corporate North American English, and as with anything else that gets translated, once translated it loses lots of the essence that comes from being spoken in the Original Language.

In My Opinion it's much more worth you while to go to www.songofthesouth.net and look at the ways in which you can take action to urge Disney to re-release the original Song Of The South.

Very Boring, Very Awful, and completely watered down and soul-less version of the Books and the Original Disney classic.

delightful adaptation
myqueopath10 February 2008
I found this film at the bottom of the bargain bin at Walmart. The fact there was an adaptation of the Uncle Remus stories starting Wayne Brady and Wanda Sykes meant it had to be interesting at the very least. I was expecting it to be quite terrible in a laughable kind of way.

However, it is a very well animated film with a talented voice cast. The character designs were wonderful and the overall art direction was well developed. The score was excellent but the songs were on the verge of unbearably cheesy, if not unnecessary.

Only complaints were that some of the jokes and gags missed the mark a little in a tired hackneyed way. But those moments were short lived. Also, there wasn't enough Wayne and Wanda!

The Uncle Remus stories are a paradoxical dilemma for American audiences. This adaptation removes the social stigmas of Post-Civil War themes but preserves important folk stories of African-American heritage, exposing these tales to a generation that might have otherwise missed this experience.

Excellent Family Movie
madmanmike198026 March 2006
While this movie may not be the same as Disney's classic "Song Of The South", this direct-to-video film from Universal Studios is a beautifully animated, clean, wholesome, entertaining family film. This movie is filled with very memorable characters, plenty of adventure, a lot of captivating stories, great moral lessons, and superb animation. This film also has a lot of clean humor without any of the sexual innuendo, lame puns, or gross-out humor that's found in many animated T.V. shows and films nowadays. Even though this film is aimed at small children, you can enjoy this movie whether you're 4 or 40, and it's great for the whole family to watch together (or by yourself). On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this film a 10 all the way! You will not be disappointed. (Hopefully Universal will decide to make a whole series of movies.)

Great family movie retelling classic stories.
downsam28 March 2006
The film features many of today's notable Black entertainers. My girls (4 & 7 y.o.) are loving it. It is a great way to keep these traditional stories alive. It is also a good way to teach children about contrasting mediums (film vs. writing). You may be also get them to read the stories in various editions. The songs are great! They too are part of the Black cultural traditions. The film does a good job of presenting both sides of morality, that someone can do good and bad things. I am thoroughly enjoying myself watching the film with my children. It retells the stories I know plus many I don't. Great for the whole family.

Great memories brought to life
juliabel30 June 2019
Growing up in Atlanta down the street from "The Wrens Nest", the birthplace of Brer Rabbit, and his wonderful friends, as a child I read all of the Uncle Remus stories, and knew them well. The only variance from the original stories, is the substitution of Brer Turtle for Uncle Remus. Otherwise they are great morality tales mixed with a lot of fun, and quite authentic including the tar baby, the laughing place, and the proverbial briar patch. It's thoroughly enjoyable, and I would recommend this to anyone young or old!

Charming treatment of the Brer Rabbit tales for modern kids
izzy_slm25 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Clever writing and character designs, excellent voice work, and surprisingly good animation for a straight-to-video release. I've read the original Uncle Remus stories to my son (age 5), as well as other "rabbit" stories from Caribbean and Gullah traditions, and West African Anansi stories. Kids love tricksters, and this is a nice way to introduce some of the classic stories.

No, it isn't "Song of the South" (a good thing or a bad thing, depending on which way you look at it--they did a nice job with the songs in this, though), and (spoiler alert!). . .

. . . I could have done without the "Brer Rabbit sees the error of his ways and becomes a good friend" piece of the arc, but wrapping up with a faithful and well-paced treatment of the best-known Brer Rabbit tale rescues it. The only way you'll do better on currently-available video is to comb through the back catalog of Weston Woods/Scholastic films for the shorts based on picture-book retellings of individual stories. And that could take a while.

The only film based on the Tales of Uncle Remus I have
ja_kitty_717 December 2007
Right now, this is the only film based on The Tales of Uncle Remus I have because the Disney Studios haven't re-released "The Song of the South" on DVD because of some controversy regarding its content. But I have seen that movie online, and quite frankly, I love both films; I am not one to take sides.

This film is loosely based on Julius Lester's take on the stories, and the film starts with a bored little girl named Janey. Then she met up with Brer Turtle, and he told her the stories of Brer Rabbit's madcap adventures. You know, in "Brer Rabbit Breaks Up the Party," it was kind of cruel that the other critters would not let Brer Rabbit join the party, but he is lucky to have a friend like Brer Turtle. So anyway, I love this film.

Enjoyed it!
soterakis21 April 2006
I just watched this movie with my kids. We all loved it. They've seen the original Song of the South and we all love that as well. I miss the mixture of live action with animation that was in the first one. I especially missed the original music but, the music in "Adventures" was very good. The animation in this movie was excellent and I thought all the characters were well played, especially Brer Rabbit. No doubt the Uncle Remus character was replaced by Brer Turtle. So, in some ways it was better than the original and in others it wasn't. We'll watch it again! We're hopeful that one day Disney will pay tribute to another great example of how African Americans have helped define American culture!
