Bedabrata Pain’s Chittagong will open the 12th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival.
Set in the turbulence of the 1930s British India, Chittagong is a true story of a 14-year-old boy, Jhunku, and of his journey to find where he belongs.
The Centerpiece Film Hum Dono Rangeen will pay tribute to Dev Anand.
As the Sidebar, the festival will hold a Retrospective of Shyam Benegal followed by a post-screening discussion with the director. Three of Benegal’s films which were penned by journalist Khalid Mohamed will be screened: Mamoo (1994), Sardari Begum (1996), and Zubeidaa (2001).

Shot over 14 years, this documentary follows the music and the tradition of activism of the Dalits in India. It won a Special Mention at the Dubai International Film Festival 2011 followed by an award at the 12th Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation films.
Bitter Seeds, a documentary by Micha X. Peled of USA on the plight of a cotton farmer in India will be screened at the festival. The documentary questions how crops are grown and how they reach the consumers and the real human cost involved.

The festival will commence on January 5, 2012 with Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and close on January 15, 2012 with Almanya, Welcome to Germany. 187 films from 73 countries will be shown at the festival.

Flying Fish from Sri Lanka by Sanjeewa Pushpa Kumar got the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (Netpac) award and a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh. Bengali film Noble Chor directed by Suman Ghosh bagged the Suchitra Sanman in the Indian cinema section, with a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh.

4th Bengaluru International Film Festival (Biffes) that will commence on December 15 will hold a special Retrospective of Iran’s Dariush Mehrjui, who is the guest of honour at the festival. The retrospective will include The Lodgers, Sara, The Pear Tree and The Music Man.
Biffes has announced a competition section for the first time and received about 40 entries. The films in competition include When We Leave by Feo Aladag, Invisible by Michal Aviad, Apartment in Athens by Ruggero Dipaola and Lucky by Avie Luthra among others.
There will be a Retrospective of Michael Cacoyannis of Greece featuring Our Last Spring, The Trojan Woman, Iphigenia, The Cherry Orchard and Sweet Country.

Gurvinder Singh’s Anhey Ghore da daan (Alms for a blind horse) won Special Jury mention with a cash prize of Usd 50,000 at the 5th Abu Dhabi Film Festival. India born British director Gemma Atwal’s documentary on the wonder kid of Orissa– Marathon Boy bagged her award for Best New Director with a cash prize of Usd 50,000.
Alms for a Blind Horse was in the New Horizon Competition at the festival. The Jury for the competition was headed by Iranian-Kurdish filmmaker Bahman Gobadi (Half Moon, Turtles can fly). The award for Best Film in this section was bagged by Stories Only Exist When Remembered, a Brazilan, Argentinian and French co production directed by Julia Murat.
The best documentary award was won by The Tiniest Place, a Mexican film directed by Titiana Huezo. The jury was headed by Egyptian-Canadian director Tahani Rached, while New Delhi based documentary filmmaker Anwar Jamal also served on the jury.
