During filming of the scene in which Trisha tries to reach her phone while being attacked by the Madman, the script called for actor Mark Irvingsen to crush the phone with his foot. Unfortunately, Mr. Irvingsen missed his mark, and instead stomped on Rebekah Kochan's hand, forcing production to be halted while she was taken for medical treatment.
The film, produced by The Asylum, was released in February 2006 to capitalize on When a Stranger Calls (2006), which this film is a mockbuster of.
The covers of many later copies of the DVD release, including the one in the image accompanying this entry, feature a prominent image of actress Rebekah Kochan obviously altered to both increase the size of her bust, but also to show more cleavage than she does in the entire movie.
The urban legend that inspired this film, and many other movies, "The Babysitter And The Man Upstairs" does, in fact, have some basis in reality. In 1950, a 13-year-old girl named Janett Christman was raped and murdered while babysitting in Columbia, Missouri. The three-year-old boy she was taking care of was unharmed and slept through the ordeal; she had called the police but the call ended before she could give any information regarding her location and as it was 1950, the call could not be traced. There was a suspect, but he was never charged and the case remains unsolved. Three years later, a 15-year-old in Wisconsin named Evelyn Hartley was abducted while she was taking care of a baby girl. As before, the child was unharmed but the house showed signs of a struggle; some drops of blood, matching Evelyn's blood type, were found in the basement and outside the house, but the case went cold within days. Evelyn is still listed as a missing person.
The climax of the movie was filmed using a taller, thinner stuntman in place of actor Mark Irvingsen. This was necessary as Mr. Irvingsen was forced to leave the production when filming ran a week behind schedule. To help disguise this fact, the stuntman wore a hooded sweatshirt and a scene was quickly filmed in which solvent is thrown in the Madman's face, badly disfiguring him.
