A delightful French comedy from Quebec, which brings an entire family
to a funeral in which past memories are revealed through various
relations to unravel past secrets.
Entertaining and visually engaging, "The family secret" moves along
with it's great use of colours, music and a script that takes many
twists and turns, which like it's main character leaves the audience in
the dark as to what the family secret really is.
I met the Director while on holiday in Vietnam and she told me that the
story was based on a event that happened in her own life. I guess real
life is definitely stranger that fiction.

This movie was hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing. It was an amazing
movie. My mother doesn't normally watch movies from Quebec but she
loved this one. The actors are really great and energetic. The story
was really well written and the jokes really well thought. It's not a
predictable movie. It's a better movie than the American movies that we
are used to seeing. If there's a movie worth seeing, it's Le secret de
ma mere. You won't be regretting it. There isn't much that I could say
about the story without spoiling it, so I won't give a summary of the
movie. I am such that this movie is going to win lots of awards. If I
could, I would go watch it again and again. I can't wait until it comes
out on DVD.

While watching this movie, I can't tell you how many times I thought to
myself 'This character completely reminds me of so-and-so' or, 'Wow,
something almost exactly like that has happened to someone I know'.
Now, not to say that my life is *exactly* like this movie (that would
be a bit to scary), but there are many elements that I think most of us
can relate to, and that is what makes this movie so intriguing and
thought-provoking.
The characters were believable, and easy to identify with, which I
think always makes for a good movie. The story starts out almost
comedic, almost light-hearted, all things considered, but does not stay
that way. The main critiques that I would have so far would be that it
was sometimes difficult to keep track of the female characters (as
there were a fair few of them and they used completely different actors
for the flashback sequences) and that a few of the scenes were almost
painfully absurd. All in all, a wonderful film which shows that there
is no such thing as a perfect family, that nothing is what it seems and
that life doesn't end when you die.
