DJ extraordinaire David Guetta has written a track that he thinks would be just perfect for Miley Cyrus. While we imagine almost any DJ would like to have Cyrus on his album, Guetta’s track record suggests that he stands a better chance that most. Backstage at Capital FM’s Summertime Ball in London, he told an interviewer, “Oh my God, we made a song, she would be so perfect for the song. We did it like two days ago. It’s such an obvious song for her. I’m like, “Wow, who could pull it off?” And she would be totally the one.” The interviewer then uses a broadened hand gesture, as she asks, “Is it like really like a (opens her arms) type of track because Miley’s a bad girl, she just does what she wants.” And then Guetta, as if he actually understood what that meant,...

Jennifer Lopez Joining NuvoTV Lopez and her Nuyorican Productions will contribute programming, work on strategy and assist in marketing the English-language cable network that’s aimed at Latino viewers, she told Bloomberg. In exchange, she’ll receive a minority stake. “I’m going to be a creative executive and part owner who will be very involved with every aspect of the network,” Lopez said. “Development, production, marketing, I’ll be involved on every side of it so we hit all the right points.” NuvoTV said last month it raised $40M from current investors Columbia Capital LLC and Rho Capital Partners and new investors Veronis Suhler Stevenson LLC and Tennenbaum Capital Partners LLC. The money will be used for new shows and marketing, much of which will support Lopez’s efforts, CEO Michael Schwimmer said. Jean-Luc Godard and Marcel Ophüls evidently covered quite a lot of ground in two public discussions that took place in 2002 and 2009, now collected in Dialogues sur le cinéma, a book published in France last week. The New Yorker's Richard Brody posts a round of first impressions, noting that the two filmmakers discuss Ophüls's father, Max, the political implications of cinema and a project they considered collaborating on, either about what "Being Jewish" means (to hear Godard tell it) or about Israel and Palestine (Ophüls's understanding): "In a brief afterword, the book's editor, Vincent Lowy, explains that Godard wrote to Ophüls in January, 2010, proposing a specific three-part film: the first part directed by Ophüls; the second part, Godard's response; the third, Ophüls's response to Godard's response. 'Jean-Luc Godard even specified, in this letter, the title that he'd have given the film: Adieu au langage.' That is, of course,...

Raúl Ruiz The International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) will be paying tribute to Chilean filmmaker Raúl Ruiz, who died in August at age 70, with a screening of his first film, La Maleta (1963) and one of his last, Ballet Aquatique (2011), at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 31. Among those expected to reminisce about Ruiz are actor Melvil Poupaud, producer François Margolin, Australian journalist and "Ruiz expert" Adrian Martin, and former Iffr director Simon Field. Ruiz's widow, film editor Valeria Sarmiento, was invited to the Rotterdam film festival, but she had to decline because she is currently directing Lines of Wellington, which was to have been her deceased husband's next project. Much like Ruiz's Mysteries of Lisbon, the historical drama is to be released both as a feature and as a television miniseries. Set at the time of one of the various Napoleonic Wars, when French forces tried to invade Portugal, Lines of Wellington...

I've only just now caught wind of a one-time-only event that took place in the Port of Tallinn last Thursday, 60 Seconds of Solitude in Year Zero, via Alison Nastasi at Movies.com: "An international collective of directors… contributed their shorts to the single 35mm film anthology that was screened for an audience one time — as part of Estonia's 2011 European Capital of Culture celebration — and then burned to the ground (along with the screen itself). Why, exactly? The project's website describes it as 'flying in the face of the cynicism of marketing, production, business operators, and the moral majority … dedicated to preserving freedom of thought in cinema.'" The roster of participating directors and artists is pretty impressive:
Brian Yuzna (USA), Michael Glawogger (Austria), Aku Louhimies (Finland), Ken Jacobs (USA), Gustav Deutsch (Austria), Tom Tykwer (Germany), Mark Boswell (USA), Malcolm Le Grice (UK), Aki Kaurismäki (Finland), Bruce McClure (UK), Mika Taanila...

9.00am: It's a big day for Europe. Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy are meeting to thrash out details of a plan that could set up a fiscal union in Europe and may (or may not) lead to some sort of resolution of the debt crisis. But this blog - like the UK - is sitting on the sidelines. My colleague Alex Hawkes will be covering the Merkozy meeting on the business live blog. And I'll be covering events at Westminster, where the most lively before 4pm will be Leveson - The Sequel, a star-studded committee hearing featuring Hugh Grant, Steve Coogan and Max Mosley who may well spend an hour telling MPs and peers exactly what they told Leveson.
Here's the diary for the day.

Los Angeles — Emi Group Ltd., the iconic British music company that is home to The Beatles, Coldplay and Katy Perry, is being split and sold for $4.1 billion.
The deals will open Emi's buyers, Universal Music and Sony/Atv, to regulatory scrutiny as they increase their dominance of the music industry.
Universal Music Group said Friday that it will pay 1.2 billion pounds ($1.9 billion) for the recording division, joining Universal artists including Lady Gaga and Eminem with Emi superstars such as David Guetta and Lady Antebellum.
A consortium led by Sony/Atv announced a separate deal Friday to pay $2.2 billion for Emi's publishing division. That business is in charge of songwriting copyrights for such artists as Rihanna and Norah Jones.
Sony/Atv, a joint venture between Sony Corp. and the Michael Jackson estate, said it is a 38 percent partner in the consortium. Other parties include Mubadala Development Co., Jynwel Capital Ltd., the Blackstone Group and David Geffen.

Rihanna's making a bold statement with the title of her fifth disc, Loud, but her boyfriend, Los Angeles Dodger Matt Kemp, is all about the quieter moments on her new album.
In an interview with U.K. radio station 95.8 Capital FM, the "Only Girl (In the World)" singer revealed that she's played some of her new tracks for her beau, and while he's feeling most of the record, he's really into the slow jams.
"He really likes, actually, the ballads on the album. Those are his favorite ones," Rihanna said. The songstress, who described the vibe of her next effort as "fearless," "bold" and "colorful," predicted that one of the slower numbers could turn out to be a hit.

Andrew Ross Sorkin poses with a Colossal Gram signed by Warren Buffett. Photo by Daniel Paik. Mystery solved! While a number of media outlets have speculated in highfalutin editorial tones about why there weren’t more grateful-to-be-bailed-out Wall Street fat cats attending Barack Obama’s twin fundraisers last night in New York, it turns out the answer was simple: the president wasn’t the biggest draw in town. What was? Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter’s cocktail party at Manhattan’s Monkey Bar celebrating the release of New York Times business reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin’s sprawling and cinematic tome, Too Big to Fail. It is, surely, the first time so many Wall Street tycoons have been under one roof outside of Washington hearing rooms since the crash. Even before that, the only thing that comes close was Blackstone chief Steve Schwarzman’s over-the-top birthday party in early 2007. But those were different times.
