In 2016, three abortion stories told on TV caught the attention of critics. The plots on “Jane the Virgin,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “You’re the Worst” all normalized abortion as a natural part of women’s health. All of these stories, however, occurred pre-Trump.
While the debate over women’s reproductive rights never went away, the topic is back in the spotlight as a new health care bill seeks to treat pregnancies and rape as pre-existing conditions and Texas legislators seek to pass anti-abortion bills. Over on Hulu, “The Handmaid’s Tale” is looking less and less like fiction.

Ensemble – Drama Series
Nominees:
“The Crown”
“Downton Abbey”
“Game of Thrones”
“Stranger Things”
“Westworld”
Will Win: “Game of Thrones”
Could Win: “Downton Abbey”
Should Win: “The Crown”
“Downton Abbey” has won three of the last four years, including the two most recent competitions. If it wins a fourth, it would tie “E.R.” for the most all-time wins in this category. But we don’t think that’s going to happen. “Game of Thrones,” a five-time nominee, will be battling it out with two newcomers: “The Crown” and “Stranger Things.” While one might think picking the ensemble winner is as simple as totaling up individual winners to find the most popular show, the ensemble winner doesn’t always line up that way. So, considering how loyal these voters are, we’re going with consistency over a fresh pick. But honestly, this one’s a toss-up.

Like huevos rancheros dumped into a Vitamix in The Chew‘s “Can You Blend It?” segment, the food-centric ABC talk show should never have been a success. And yet, like the tasty tortilla soup that results from that experiment, it somehow is.
The hour-long cook-and-chat-fest debuted in 2011. Its not-entirely-novel concept: a group of culinary minded co-hosts, including Food Network personalities Mario Batali and Michael Symon, Top Chef finalist Carla Hall and The Dorm Room Diet author Daphne Oz, gather to share recipes and gab with fellow co-host Clinton Kelly (What Not to Wear).

The Television Academy has spoken! Here are your 2016 Emmy Nominations...
The time to fill out your Emmy Madness Bracket is now. Wait, wrong event. But that would be fun, wouldn’t it? Kirsten Dunst slugging it out versus her network foe Sarah Paulson for Emmy gold. How about perennial favorite Game Of Thrones pitted against underdog newcomer Mr. Robot in the championship round? In the “peak TV” era, maybe a bracket formatted competition is the only true way to determine the best in the world of television.
Anyway, we’ll have to settle for fan polls and speculation as we countdown to the 68th Annual Emmy Award on Sunday, Sept. 18th on ABC. Until then, here is the list of nominees for the major categories. You can find the full list here.

Good morning, readers! Here's your wake-up call:
That's a whole lot of actress powerhouses on television in one small selfie: Sarah Paulson (The People vs. Oj Simpson), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Constance Zimmer (UnREAL and House of Cards), Regina King (American Crime), Kirsten Dunst (Fargo), Kerry Washington (Scandal), and Jennifer Lopez (Shades of Blue). Before you jump to conclusions that Ryan Murphy is just expanding his empire, let's take a closer look:
1. What exactly caused this moment of divinity? Casual friday brunch? Do they all share a dentist?
2. We are not worthy of Regina King and we never will be.
3. Kerry Washington is there too?! Ray reunion! Wouldn't they make a great duo in something fun and female-empowering like Thelma and Louise?
4. Everyone is lovely here, but Sarah Paulson is serving.
5. It's easy to forget if you're like me and don't watch much television that even large stars are...

2. Olivia Wilde on the selflessness of motherhood:

New York Times TV Critic Alessandra Stanley responded to backlash after she wrote that Shonda Rhimes's autobiography "should be called 'How to Get Away With Being an Angry Black Woman.'" She stated that her piece was stylistically similar to other articles she's written, adding, "I didn't think Times readers would take the opening sentence literally because I so often write arch, provocative ledes that are then undercut or mitigated by the paragraphs that follow." Her statement comes along with that of The New York Times's Public Editor Margaret Sullivan, who wrote in a post of her own that readers "rightly" took issue with the piece, saying, "Intended to be in praise of Ms. Rhimes, it delivered that message in a condescending way that was - at best - astonishingly tone-deaf and out of touch." In Stanley's review of Shonda's latest show, How to Get Away With Murder, which premieres on ABC on Sept.

It's nearly impossible to describe Shonda Rhimes, the prolific producer behind Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder, in only three words. But that effectively is what happened Friday when a New York Times feature designed to put the spotlight on Rhimes' ability to break down stereotypes essentially reduced the prolific showrunner to an "angry black woman." The story went viral — for all the wrong reasons. The article, which referenced black characters like Grey's Anatomy's Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Scandal's Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and How to Get Away With Murder's Annalise Keating (Viola Davis), sparked an immediate response from Rhimes. "Wait. I'm 'angry' And a Romance Writer?!! I'm going to need to

Shonda Rhimes felt far from celebrated after reading New York Times’ critic Alessandra Stanley’s article titled “Wrought in Their Creator’s Image” that suggests Rhimes is and creates characters that are “angry black women.”
Shonda Rhimes Vs. 'New York Times' Critic
Among the problematic passages in Stanley’s piece is one in which she writes, “Ms. Rhimes has embraced the trite but persistent caricature of the Angry Black Woman, recast it in her own image and made it enviable.” Stanley’s opening line, similarly off-putting, reads, “When Shonda Rhimes writes her autobiography, it should be called, “How to Get Away with Being an Angry Black Woman.”
Rhimes, who created Grey's Anatomy and Scandal and produces How to Get Away with Murder, took to Twitter to address Stanley's article, firing off a series of tweets that slammed it.
Confused why @nytimes critic doesn't know identity of Creator of show she's reviewing.

The cast of "Scandal" may be one of the most social media-savvy set of TV actors around. After the ABC series grew to a bona fide hit during its second season, thanks in part to the fervent Gladiators on Twitter spreading word about their beloved show (also because the show is, you know, Awesome), Kerry Washington and Co. began live-tweeting every episode while fans are watching.
Joining Washington for each East Coast and West Coast airing are her fellow Gladiators Scott Foley, Guillermo Diaz, Katie Lowes, Bellamy Young, Joshua Malina, Darby Stanchfield, Jeff Perry, Tony Goldwyn and Columbus Short. On Thursday (Dec. 12), recurring guest stars Dan Bucatinsky and Joe Morton joined in on the fun as well. If you're not following all of them on Twitter and following along week to week, well, you're doing it wrong.

The singer will do double-duty this weekend as host and musical guest for the Nov. 16 installment.
Lady Gaga takes the stage on Saturday Night Live this weekend, pulling double duty as host and musical guest.
In a run of SNL promos touting her upcoming stint, the Artpop singer -- decked out in a fancy black dress, blonde bob and a memorable hat -- and Kenan Thompson do their best to bring a united front. Thompson even tries to win Gaga over by wearing a meat watch, a reference to the 2010 meat dress that she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards.
"Just be yourself!" Gaga insists. So what does he do? Take a bite out of the lunch meat. "Maybe don't be yourself ..." Gaga trails off.

In another promo, Thompson and Gaga tackle issues surrounding weight.

“Scandal” has found Olivia Pope’s (Kerry Washington) mother! Khandi Alexander has been cast as the enigmatic figure, Maya Lewis, a show representative told TheWrap. We’re told the 56-year-old actress will debut on Thursday’s episode via flashbacks in the recurring role. Also read: ‘Scandal’s’ Kerry Washington: ‘I’ve Never Been Bothered by the Lesbian Rumor’ She arrives just as the ABC drama revealed that Olivia’s off-and-on lover, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn), may have shot down a plane that her mother was traveling on. Wait, there’s more: It was by order of her father,...

ABC’s Scandal started brewing again this Thursday night, and per its trademark style raised just as many intriguing questions as it exasperatingly answered.
To quickly recap: Olivia suffered a verbal beatdown at the hands of her father, B613 boss Rowan, before electing to not skip town but stay and manage her “First Mistress” infamy. The Gladiators lobbied to help, but Liv kept them at arm’s length, opting instead to “pull the fire alarm” to score facetime with Fitz… and Mellie. Over the course of a riveting, nine-minute sequence, Olivia laid out in detail a truthy fix, right down...

Even super intense shows like "Scandal" have bloopers. In the Season 2 gag reel below, Kerry Washington and Co. have a hard time remembering their lines and keeping straight faces while delivering those signature Shonda Rhimes sentences.
There's also more than one dance break, trouble moving a dead body and problems with doors.
I'm re-watching the @ScandalABC Season 2 blooper/outtakes right now!!!! All kindsa hilarity. I Cannot Wait For You To See It On The DVD.

It’s official (again!) — after coming in second on the ‘Maxim’ Hot 100, Selena made the top ten of another ‘Hottest Women’ list! Justin better be thankful he finally won her back, right?
We’re not the only ones who’ve noticed that Selena Gomez has amped up her sexiness in the past year. The 20-year-old singer’s hotness was recognized yet again when Complex ranked her number six on their list of the “100 Hottest Women Right Now.”
Selena Gomez: One Of 100 Hottest Women Right Now

Maybe Olivia Pope needs to do some damage control for ABC, which brought back only two of the 10 shows it premiered last season. At the network’s upfront presentation on Tuesday, Kerry Washington appeared in a pre-taped clip as her character from Scandal, and offered advice to Anne Sweeney, the president of Disney/ABC Television Group, alongside Jimmy Kimmel. Discussing the problem of Dancing With the Stars, which took a ratings dip this season, Kimmel quipped, “For one thing, they’re not really stars.” There aren’t a ton of stars in ABC’s new lineup, either — but there are...

We’re in a rare down week of awards season, and while most editors are breathing a sigh of relief and/or eyeing the bundled-up fashions of the Sundance stars, we decided to keep going with the VH1 Celebrity Style Points awards season competition. In lieu of an actual event to judge, we had our panel — Yahoo! Entertainment’s New York bureau chief Breanne Heldman, MTV Style’s associate editor Maud Deitch, Glamour online style editor Nikki Ogunnaike, and our own Ambika Muttoo and Sabrina Rojas Weiss — look back at an outfit each of the eight contenders wore to a movie premiere in the past year. Emma Stone, Kerry Washington, Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence were delightfully unpredictable at these events, and we love how that shook up the results a bit.

You know that moment when you're watching a red carpet pre-show, screaming at the TV in hopes the inane interviewer will ditch the pre-canned patter and ask your infinitely more interesting question? Well, that happened last night at The American Music Awards when The Middle star Eden Sher co-hosted the official pre-show at ABC.com.
She not only embraced an outside the box line of questioning, but actually let her emotions shine through (maaaaybe a wee bit too much with Miss. Swift) and declared herself to be Of The People, For The People and By The People as her chats with Taylor Swift, Christina Aguilera and Carly Rae Jepsen have already eclipsed most performances in views online.

Another year, another Hollywood award show where really fancy golden barbecue skewers are handed out. The 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards made for a relatively brisk (well, they stayed under three hours) while fairly predictable (well, at least drama had a new winner) evening. Host Jimmy Kimmel returned for the second time, and opened the show with a skit featuring some of the leading ladies of primetime. It was fitting, considering ladies stole the show in what was otherwise a relatively snoozy affair. Here is a look at the real winners and some should have been winners. Also, of course, the dresses.
Outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series: Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Her mention of nipple covers and sister wives in her acceptance speech felt a little like she was auditioning for her own show on TLC.

Shorty after the sizzle reel of "Django Unchained" premiered at Comic-Con on Saturday, I met with two stars of the film, Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington -- who also appeared together in "Ray" -- on a very hot hotel balcony just a stone's throw (Ok, more like a stone's catapult) from where that footage premiered.
"Django Unchained," the story of a freed slave seeking a violent revenge on the man who kidnapped his wife, was famously written by Quentin Tarantino as a starring vehicle for Will Smith. Smith, due to scheduling conflicts, couldn't star in the film, so the title role went to Jamie Foxx. Here, Foxx and Kerry Washington (who plays his wife) talk about what the rambunctious production -- apparently alcohol shots were often involved -- and Foxx explains why he didn't hesitate to take the role of Django, even though it was written with someone else in mind.

6 months. No, not the runtime of The Dark Knight Rises, but rather the amount of time separating our eyes from viewing Django Unchained high and wide on the big screen. We at The Movie Bit, for lack of more articulate vernacular, Cannot. Fucking. Wait. for this piece of cinema to hit the multiplexes and have been salivating repeatedly over every trailer Qt has bestowed upon us. The salivation is not about to stop anytime soon with the release of the latest 60 second spot from Tarantino’s southern tale of bounty hunting bad asses Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) and Django’s (Jamie Foxx) search for his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington). While there’s not a whole lot new here, we do get a proper glimpse at Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Stephen, the house slave of, plantation-owning prick, Calvin Candie (Leonardo diCaprio). Although the Yanks will get to see this at Christmas time,...

"Scandal" ... what a season finale, right? I caught up with star Kerry Washington, who teased big things for the finale, but that was just beyond "juicy" and "shocking."
Spoiler alert: Do not read any further if you haven't yet watched "Scandal" Season 1, Episode 7, titled "Grant: For the People."
We saw the bloody aftermath of Gideon's (Brendan Hines) scissor stabbing by the VP's chief of staff Billy Chambers (Matt Letscher), and the reveal of who actually hired Huck's old hitman pal-turned-torture-victim to kill Amanda Tanner. There was a shift in Olivia Pope's (Kerry Washington) relationship with the president (Tony Goldwyn), his right-hand man Cyrus (Jeff Perry) and the first lady (Bellamy Young), but we also saw how Olivia's associates could rally for one of their own -- even if it meant destroying key evidence.
But the biggest question of the season remains: Who is Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes)? Any why does...
