The Weekly Wrap-Up: September 27-October 3, 2008

One interesting side effect of the meltdown on Wall Street is that part of the "sweetening" of the bailout bill authored by the Senate during the week of September 27-October 3, 2008, included a tax break aimed at film and TV production companies. They received an increase in the single-year deduction in production costs, from $15 million to $20 million, that they may take if the costs are incurred in economically depressed areas. In an effort to keep film and TV productions in the U.S., it also allows more companies to use a domestic production deduction.

Considering the state of the economy, it probably won't be too hard to qualify as a "depressed area" so it's likely that more independent productions will be able to remain here in the States instead of trekking up to Canada or over to Romania, which bodes well for the horror genre. At least that's how it seems on the surface,

Mulberry Street boys doing Stake Land with Larry Fessenden

28 September 2008 6:05 PM, PDT | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

For those of you who missed Jim Mickle's Mulberry Street (review) I'd highly recommend it, it's sort of a rat take on the zombie genre set in lower Manhattan. I actually got to see it at last year's Toronto After Dark, and the audience loved it. Now comes word that one of my personal favorite filmmakers, Larry Fessenden and his Glass Eye Pix production company will be producing Jim Mickle's next, a vampire story also set in Manhattan called Stake Land. Nick Damici will also star in and co-write this film which will begin lensing this November. Unfortunately there's not much else, but I'm excited!

From Mulberry Street To Stake Land! Latest From Jim Mickle!

28 September 2008 11:26 AM, PDT | From iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news

I really enjoyed the hell out of filmmaker Jim Mickle's Mulberry Street, which was part of last year's 8 Films To Die For from the After Dark Fest. Now, Fangoria has revealed Mickle's follow-up film, titled Stake Land. Whereas Mulberry Street was Mickle and co-writer Nick Damici's take on zombies (rat zombies, no less), Stake Land will be their take on vampires! Glass Eye Pix Larry Fesseden is producing and told Fango, "Yes, it’s got vampires in it. Mulberry Street's Nick Damici will star and co-write it again with Jim, and the same Mulberry Street stable of cast and crew will be back. We start shooting in New York City this November."

As far as Fesseden, he hinted to Fango that he's up for a Hollywood remake, but no details yet.

Mulberry Street Duo Reteams With Glass Eye for Stake Land

28 September 2008 7:18 AM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

Though Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix just teamed up with Dark Sky to make a series of films (read about it here), those aren’t the only films Pix will be producing in the coming months; Fessenden told Fangoria last night about a new movie they’re making with the Mulberry Street team of Jim Mickle and Nick Damaci that promises to do for bloodsuckers what Mulberry did for mutant rat zombies.

The film is called Stake Land, and if you can’t guess by the title, it’s a vampire flick. Not much more was revealed other than that it will be shooting in New York in November and that Mickle will direct and co-write with Damaci, who will also star. Most of the crew behind Mulberry Street will return for Stake Land, as a matter of fact.

The mag also learned that Fessenden is in talks with
