Jack's Big Music Show: A Trip Down Memory Lane with a Child's Eye Review
hdoerr-0210822 January 2024
As a child, I eagerly anticipated watching Jack's Big Music Show every week. This show was unlike any other I had seen before, as it introduced me to various genres of music and different musical instruments. The characters, Jack, Mary, and Mel, were all unique and entertaining. Jack, the host, had a vibrant personality that made the show exciting to watch. Mary, the puppet, brought charm to the show with her quirky antics, while Mel, the drummer, added a cool edge to the whole experience.

However, as I grew older and rewatched the show, I realized the plotlines were simplistic and predictable. Jack and his friends often solved problems through music by centering their stories around it. While this was enjoyable to watch as a child, it needed more depth and substance for an adult viewer.

Moreover, some of the songs and performances felt forced and cheesy. The show had a formula that followed every episode, which sometimes made the performances feel repetitive. While the show did a great job of introducing kids to various musical instruments and genres, it could have delved deeper into the nuances of each genre to make it more educational and exciting.

I rate this Nick Jr. Show a 6 out of 10. While it was an excellent show for kids, it lacked the depth and substance to keep an adult viewer engaged. Nonetheless, I will always cherish the memories of watching this show as a child, and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Lots of musical fun
woodway7718 September 2005
Jack's Big Music Show just started on Noggin. It is a lot of musical fun for the kids. The characters have a very Muppet-style feeling, the kind that seem a bit smarter than average 'toons or puppets, enjoyable for both kids and grownups. Jack, his friend Mary and Jack's dog Mel get together in their musical clubhouse and play instruments and sing together. The show is apparently going to have guest musicians, and each show has a music video from the Laurie Berkner group. My 6 year old was looking forward to the show after seeing the preview spots on Noggin, and was happy with it. I think it should be a good fun-type family show that helps kids explore music and learn about different instruments and styles.

Really cute, fun, entertaining, and educational show
Wow! This is a really cute, fun, entertaining, and educational show. I said that because I watch this on Noggin with my 16-month-old nephew from time to time. It's hard to say which show on Noggin is the best. Still it's really cute, fun, entertaining, and educational. The music is really fun to move and sing along to as well. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that the people at Noggin really know how to reach a toddler's developing mind. Now, in conclusion, if you have children, nieces, or nephews, I strongly recommend this really cute, fun, entertaining, and educational show. I guarantee you that they will enjoy it.

best kids show on....
dr_not2 May 2006
My grandson watches this show every day...he is enthralled by it... you can barely get his attention when it on and he's only 18 months old..the humor is great for the adults watching with their kids (or grand kids... as it were)...the music is great too...such a wide variety is hardly ever seen on kids t.v. ...my grandson mimics the clapping and singing...even the animal noises on the "Mel thinks he's a cat" episode...which happens to be one of MY favorites...this show is one the whole family can enjoy...over and over ...as it is in my house...we can't wait for the new episodes to arrive...bravo to the creators of this show and please put it out on video soon!!!!!!!!!

An amazing Television show for the youngest of children.
bupmi3 July 2006
My daughter just turned one back on June 7, 2006. Jack's Big Music Show has been her all time favorite TV show for at least half her life. She sits in front of the vibrantly colored set and "cast" and is just taken in by it. She can watch episode after episode (even back to back) and not get bored with it. We can't say that for many other TV programs for her age bracket. The music is wonderful, the screenplays are adorable and Jack, Mary, Mel and Earl the Squirrel are just the best. If you have a Tivo, and a child that is six-months-old or above, this program will be perfect for them. We have it on Direct TV on Noggin and can't live without it. I say that it's entertaining for six-month and above, and i mean it. My Son, wife, myself and even some friends can sit in front of this show and thoroughly enjoy it. It's that good. Please take a moment to enjoy this show with your child. You will not be disappointed.

The best kids program on TV!
mariahriggs15 January 2007
The best kids program on TV! A must see for anyone who wants their child to love great music. Laurie Berkner, the cornerstone musican on the show, is talented and diverse in the spectrum of children's indie rock tunes. In one episode the legendary guitarist Buddy Guy appears as the "King of Swing", whom Jack gets a special visit from because he finds a "golden ticket" in his new "King of Swing" CD. Other children's music notables such as Milkshake, Music for Aardvarks & Other Mammals, and Rebecca Frezza have fun music videos that provide some engaging eye candy to dance around a room to. With at least two music videos per episode and a number if other original songs preformed by the Muppet cast it has an exciting pace and will get even the most apatetic indivigual moving! So watch it and get moving! The best part is as a parent you will love it too!! Exciting, fun, and Joyous entertainment filled with some of the best music on TV. Jack, Mel and Mary are adorable characters that inspire the best in young children and their parents. A rare find in a sea of flat uninspiring children's programing that is flooding the air waves.

Fun Show for All Ages!!!!
mcnewbe5 October 2006
My 23-month-old twin girls absolutely adore this show and truly watch it. We first discovered the show when they were almost a year old and they were entranced by it even then. It keeps their attention unlike other shows. They have to dance, tap their feet and clap their hands with the introductory song each time and say goodbye to Jack, Mary & Mel at the end of each episode. The show is wonderfully produced with very few reminders that it's puppets you are watching. They are so masterfully coordinated with the music and each other that it's easy for adults to enjoy the show, too. The music is fun and we've even purchased CDs to take with us on the road. We're waiting on pins and needles for a DVD, merchandise like dolls and such, and new episodes!!!!!!

My Daughter Loves it
drewandem31 October 2005
My daughter is only 2 and begs to watch the show. We TIVO it regularly and she goes nuts over the show. I have seen every episode thus far at least 10 times each. It beats the heck out of Booh Baah and other trash like that. The music in it is cool. I even can live with it. My daughter would rather watch this show than any other on TV. She usually doesn't even watch TV but goes nuts when this is on. At least it teaches values and counting etc... It is a great show. The fact that Jack is such a music freak is really cool as well. He likes all kinds of music. My favorite is the Schwarzman Quartet those guys are really cool. They are in every episode and sing really cool songs. Laurie Berkner is really cool as well. There are other kid friendly groups that perform as well. Lot's of fun!!!

My son "Jack" loves JBMS
rleggett-127 March 2006
My son is 16 mo. and loves Jack's Big Music Show. The characters are funny, and the music is great. There are many special guests including Buddy Guy. After about the 100th time we know all the quirky things to say along with the show especially the Schwartsman Quartet. "Mel the dog just says ....." It's wholesome and somewhat educational. The songs are about counting, self esteem, music appreciation, etc. And jack And marry model social skills such as politeness and sharing. Even though it is kids music you'll find yourself singing the songs to yourself in the car. I only wish there were more products such as DVDs and CDs to buy. Some clothes would be cool too.

We love Jack!
lawmeq16 March 2006
Jack's Big Music Show is the greatest! I have 2 nieces (2y/o & 1y/o), and since the eldest was born, Noggin has been the child-friendly programming of choice in their house. JBMS was a hit the first time the girls saw it. The puppets always play very nicely together which has taught the babies how to share; as well as how much fun it is to play with another child, which is great for young siblings. With kid friendly music videos that range from clever to super-silly, the girls love to dance and sing with the children on the TV. JBMS is also great for adults because there is enough of a variety to the music to prevent it from becoming tedious (like other children's programming.) We love the Schwartzman Quartet and they girls always ask for Jack, Mary, and Mel.

Jack's big show of fun Seseame Street Style
sunshiner_7526 September 2005
I just watched this with my 3 year old daughter and could have closed my eyes and seen Grover, Prairie Dawn, Baby Bear and all those lovable characters. A show consisting of 3 puppets, and special guests. They have music videos throughout the show with child friendly performers and other children dancing around. Jack has a club house in his backyard and invites the viewers and his friends to come over for musical fun. They have guests like the Schwartzman Quartet, baby Wolf (from the big bad wolf family), and many others. They discuss different musical instruments and generally engage children through music. I like this show and am convinced that Mary is the same puppeteer who plays Praire Dawn on Sesame Street. Enjoy the show!

This Show "Rocks"!!!
boisenewbie21 September 2005
I am in my 30's, but I am not embarrassed to admit that I really enjoy watching the occasional "children's show". (Especially now that I am a proud aunt of a very smart toddler) Jack's Big Music Show is one of the best children's shows I have seen!! It is very entertaining and the music is great. I love how it mixes segments of music videos into the show.(Some of the songs stay with you for days! I haven't been able to get "Under a Shady Tree" out of my head for a week now ... but that isn't such a bad thing!) I also really enjoy some of the characters that I have seen so far on the show. Like the LITTLE Bad Wolf (BIG Bad's baby brother) and who can not smile over the Schwartzman Cortet!!

Hardcore children's show fans may recognize the voices. The voice of Jack is also the voice of Baby Bear on Sesame Street and Mary was the voice of Julie and Sizzle the Cat on Puzzle Place. (I had to come on to IMDb to find that out because it was driving me crazy! The voices were so familiar!!) If you are a Muppet Fan and a music lover, you just might enjoy this show ... no matter how old you are. BUT I Guarantee THE CHILDREN WILL LOVE IT!!!

I am editing this comment because since I have submitted it, I have read some things about this show that I want to address:

Although I made the comment that adults will love this show, we have to remember that THIS SHOW IS INTENDED FOR PRESCHOOLERS. I have read comments that go as far as complaining about the music on the show saying, "The music is frenetic and emphasizes rhythm over tune and lyricism" ... Does this person even KNOW a preschooler??!! When is the last time you heard your 3 year old comment about a song's lyrics? (Unbelievable!)

My opinion is my opinion and I can't convince anyone to like something they don't - but it is just not fair to compare a show for children to that of adults. But I happen to know that I am not the ONLY adult who feels like a good children's show is worth it's weight in gold ...

This show is really good!!
