A complete dramatic movie.
nutan-xalxo8726 October 2012
The story of Faltu is set around a district in West Bengal in the early 1950s. Faltu is the story of a 20-year-old orphan called Faltu(Yash Pandit). It is about his search for the man who fathered him.Besides the life of Faltu, the movie revolves around a village and its people with a lot of dramatic events. Faltu is a movie that deals with the lives of the villagers and how everything turns out when a census official questions Faltu's parentage. It was very well known about Faltu's mother(Indrani Halder) but there was no information about who his father was.Faltu was never bothered about his identity until this official's question. The entire story of the film deals with human relations and how the guilt of having done something wrong haunts everyone in the village. They want to make up for their sins, but end up opening a new can of worms and spoiling a marriage. Directed by Anjan Das,the writer of the story was Syed Mustafa Siraj.Yash Pandit and Manjari Fadnis who are in the lead have done a very good job in their role. The movie is really different and should be seen by people who are an ardent fan of Bengali movies.

Faltu is another huge Bengali hit from the house of Planman Motion Pictures.Starring Yash Pandit in the lead role of a young boy named Faltu(which means useless),the movie has some really good scenes.Anjan Das has again proved in the film that he is among the best in his work. Faltu is the story about a young boy who lives his life happily and in content until he has to face some serious questions from the population census official about his father. He lived in a village where everyone knew about his mother but no one had any idea about his father and who his father could be.Besides this,it also deals with some serious problems in the village. The movie also has Indrani Halder as the mother of Faltu.Manjari plays role of the friend of Faltu. Faltu is a very interesting film.It has lots of elements and has lots of twists and turns. It is a superb film and should be seen to experience the excellence of Anjan Das,the director.

A beautiful canvas of an ugly facet.. hard hitting!!
lornadg21 February 2006
A world to which at times we are deliberately oblivious to, exists and we don't see it. Faltu is a picturesque depiction of one such gory tale. Without doubt, its a hard hitting moview. Faltu scores on all three fronts- the story, direction and acting.

Based on celebrated Bengali author Syed Mustafa Siraj's novel – Ranirghater Brittanto – Faltu is the latest from Planman. This is Chaudhuri's Planman Motion Pictures' second foray into Bengali movies, after the success of their earlier Bengali film Sanjhbatir Roopkathara won accolades all over the world. Faltu looks all set to repeat history.

Set in the backdrop of Mushirdabad district in West Bengal in the early 1950s, this is the story of a 20-year-old boy called Faltu and his quest for love and search for roots. This is also the story of a village and its people, woven around a narrative with myriad moments and a lot of dramatic events.

Ranirghat is a not-so-developed village people mainly by refugees from Bangladesh. The lives of the villagers take a new turn when a census official questions Faltu's parentage. While it is a well-known fact that Faltu is the son of Suri Khepi (a mad woman played to perfection by Indrani Haldar), no one knows who his father is. Neither does Faltu know, nor did he care to all this while. He was happy with what he was doing – driving a bus and ferrying villagers from one bank of the river to the other.

The census official's question opens a Pandora's box. It turns out that almost everyone in the village -- including Ismail (Biplab Chatterjee), who brought up Faltu and taught him driving -- took their turns to rape Suri Khepi, taking advantage of her mental condition.

Things reach a stage where everybody knows that Faltu's father is one of them, but nobody is sure of who that is. Faltu is not particularly bothered though. He is more interested in earning his living, and pursuing his love interest – Tuktuki (played by Manjari Fadnis).

A government order brings in bad news for the villagers of Ranirghat. As part of development plans, the government wants to construct a bridge across the river and wants the villagers to vacate the village. They agree to do so, but before parting ways, they want Faltu and Tuktuki to get married – to make up for what they had done to Suri Khepi. A guilty feeling of raping Surikhepi haunts almost every single male in the village. That is when a twist in the tale ensures Faltu and Tuktuki don't get married.

The entire story deals with human relations and how the guilt of having done something wrong haunts everyone in the village. They want to make up for their sins, but end up opening a new can of worms and spoiling a marriage.

The storyline is not just fascinating but leaves you with a long list of questions on human relations and desires. And Anjan Das does a fantastic job of narrating the story in his simple and relaxed fashion.

a hard hitting film.
poonam-kaur8887 December 2012
Faltu is anjan das' exceptionally good film. Its a hard hitting bengali film produced by the planman motion pictures. The story deals with a village in west bengal and people living in it. I have seen very few Bengali films as I have always been a bollywood fan but this one is a must watch for all.Yash Pandit in the lead role of Faltu is really good.It is really a good movie to watch. It shows the real life of you and me--rather than the real you and me. Faltu is the story about a guy called Faltu who is in search of his father. About the villagers who are not able to guide him to someone because any one of them could his father.A mad woman wanders into a village and raped by every villager!Soumitra Chatterjee is one of my favourite actors. Everyone in this movie is very real. We should watch these kind of movies at least once in a while. I Would recommend for all who like real life stories. Great story and very nicely done!

Anjan Das has made a beautiful film. It's simply flawless. The storyline is not just fascinating but leaves you with a long list of questions on human relations and desires. The entire story of this Bengali hit deals with human relations and how the guilt of having done something wrong haunts everyone in a village of West Bengal. Yash Pandit in the lead role of Faltu is brilliant. He has played the role perfectly.Don't think any one else could have played the role the way he has played. The director of the film Anjan Das has superbly made the film. The film also describes the condition and situation of a particular district in Bengal where life is quite difficult more so because of the mistakes that people themselves have committed.

jagat-singh55524 January 2013
Faltu is a marvelous film by Anjan Das.The man has made number of hit films and for me this one sits on to of the hit list. Faltu is the story of a young boy named Faltu living in a village of West Bengal.A story about his life and his search of his identity and his father. It is a great and emotional movie with too many beautiful moments.Faltu also deals about the life of the villagers. The movie is basically about how the guilt of doing something wrong makes them feel really bad and about how every time a problem is being,a new box of problem pops up. Anjan Das,I have heard ,is a great Bengali film maker and this one I am sure would be one of his best films till date.Everyone in this movie is very real. We should watch these kind of movies at least once in a while. I Would recommend for all who like real life stories.

I had no idea about this film until I watched it accidentally.I saw this movie on a TV channel thinking its the Hindi movie FALTU. The movie revolves around the people of a village and a young boy named Faltu. It is about his search for his identity, his father after a population census questions about his father.Yash Pandit who plays the role of Faltu is really good as Faltu. There are moments that touches us emotionally. Deals with human relations

The entire story of faltu deals with human relations and how the guilt of having done something wrong haunts everyone in the village. They want to make up for their sins, but end up opening a new can of worms and spoiling a marriage.

The storyline is not just fascinating but leaves you with a long list of questions on human relations and desires. And Anjan Das does a good job of narrating the story in his simple and relaxed fashion.Shot entirely in Murshidabad, the film offers very soothing visuals, thanks to Shirsho Roy's cinematography, and equally soothing music courtesy Jyothishka Dasgupta.

Not to be missed
parveensaini27019 November 2012
I am not a Bengali but I have watched numerous Bengali films.Faltu is among my all time favorite Bengali movies along with Khela and Dosar.Tremendous film indeed are these three.Faltu has been directed by Anjan Das,also my favorite director. It stars Yash Pandit in the lead role of a young boy named Faltu.Faltu lives in a village of West Bengal with his mother. He is happy and content with everything in his life until one day the population census raises question about his father. Till now, Faltu too never bothered to know about his father. In fact no one in the village had any idea about his father. The movie is the journey of Faltu's life after all this where he sets out in search of his father.Apart from his life, the film also depicts the life of the villagers where people are involved in wrong things and works. It is about their guilt and the keenness in them to correct all the wrong that they have done. But the village has more than one problem.A new problem does not take time to pop up when even the old ones are not resolved. It is a beautiful film where all actors have done superb job.Indrani Halder as Faltu's mother is brilliant. The film is a story that leaves a silent message for everyone. It does become difficult for a non-Bengali to understand the movie but give it a try because some movies are meant not to be missed at all.

Faltu certainly is among the best movies that I have seen and one of the most well made pictures. The film describes the condition and situation of a particular district in Bengal where life is quite difficult more so because of the mistakes that people themselves have committed.I particularly liked some of the scenes involving Yash Pandit. The storyline is really awesome and fascinating and leaves you with a long list of questions on human relations and desires. It is about his search for the man who fathered him.Besides the life of Faltu, the movie revolves around a village and its people with a lot of dramatic events. All must watch this movie.

nilesh-sinha44421 January 2013
What does one do when he doesn't know where he comes from? When he doesn't know who his mother was but has heard several stories of who she probably was? When there are seven men who call you "son"? Nothing, really, unless the boy is as curious as Faltu. He refuses to accept the anonymity of his identity and sets on a journey of tracing his roots. Little does he know that en route, it will uncover ugly truths and deceiving faces. Through these turbulent times, his loving companion Tuktuki would render all the support that he needs. But is she strong enough to face the harsh realities herself?Anjan Das has again proved in the film that he is among the best in his work. Very god and simple Bengali cinema!!!

This is one of my favorite Bengali film.I am a Bengali and like watching Bengali films but very few films actually make sense.I am pleased to be a part of the Bengali community and the village on which this story is based. The story is on celebrated Bengali author Syed Mustafa Siraj's novel – Ranirghater Brittanto. This is Chaudhuri's Planman Motion Pictures' second foray into Bengali movies, after the success of their earlier Bengali film Sanjhbatir Roopkathara won accolades all over the world. Top class Bengali film
sachinchaudhuri18216 November 2012
Faltu is among the biggest hits by Planman motion pictures and one of the biggest hits in Bengali cinema. The movie describes the story of a village, its people and a young boy named Faltu(played by Yash Pandit). The village is often haunted by all the wrongs that the people did in past.It is about their regret and a feeling of guilt for whatever wrong they did.Faltu is about how every time the villagers think a problem has been sorted,a new box of problem opens up.Faltu is among those villagers whose life is simple and is not bothered by anything except one day a serious question is raised about his father about whom no one had any idea.Faltu's mother,Indrani Halder never told about his father and so after all the drama,Faltu sets out on a journey to search his father.Manjari Fadnis plays the girlfriend of Faltu and all three-Yash,Indrani and Manjari;also my favorites;are superb in the film. The film has been beautifully made by Anjan Das and is a top class Bengali film that I don't think many Bengali viewers would have missed.

A splendid drama by Anjan Das.

Faltu ("Useless") is a Bengali movie based on Syed Mustafa Siraj's story Ranir Ghater Brittanto that released in 2006.The film was produced by Arindam Chaudhuri(Planman Motion Pictures) and directed by Anjan Das.Anjan Das has transformed this story beautifully for on screen viewers. The movie featured Soumitra Chatterjee, Indrani Halder, Yash Pandit and Manjari Fadnis, Nirmal Kumar, Masood Akhtar, Biplab Chatterjee in the lead role. The story of Faltu is about a boy Faltu, played by Yash Pandit. Faltu is a young boy in search of his identity and his father. The story of the movie is set around a district in West Bengal.Faltu is the story of this village and its people. It accounts the life of a village and its people, woven around a narrative with myriad moments and a lot of dramatic events. The lives of the villagers take a new turn when a census official questions Faltu's parentage. It was a well-known fact that Faltu is the son of Sureswari Dasi aka Suri Khepi, but no one actually knew who his father was. Neither does Faltu nor he has even bothered with the question. He was happy with what he was doing — driving a bus and ferrying villagers. The entire story deals with whatever the villagers have done and the guilt of having done something wrong.Anjan Das has made a mark in the world of direction making and this perhaps is one of his best work that I have seen.A complete drama that should be sen at least once.

For movie lovers....
devendra-kumar98514 January 2013
With 'Faltu', Anjan Das has tackled the most difficult text in trying to translate it into cinema. Based on Syed Mustafa Siraj's 'Ranir Ghatter Brittanto', the film traced the lives of some uprooted people, a mad woman and her off spring-Faltu who has the quest for his identity. Anjan Das, a high class director has presented a number of unusual and challenging films till date. His earlier film based on literature were 'Sanjbatir Roopkatha' was also an out of the box venture which was highly acclaimed by the viewers.Planman Motion Pictures have always proved to have excelled in their venture. They do have a lot to offer the movie lovers in the days to come.

A very delicate story crafted beautifully.
daksh-sinha88829 November 2012
Anjan Das made a grand entry into Bengali films with the superb Sanjhbaatir Roopkathara a few years back. After Sanjhbaatir Roopkathara , he went out to make Iti Srikanta (which saw the debut of Soha Ali Khan) and it fetched lukewarm response. This time he has filmed in languid frames the cinematically rich Faltu .It is produced by Arindam Chaudhuri, who had backed Anjan Das's maiden project. Faltu has a thin storyline (based on Syed Mustafa Siraj's Ranir Ghater Brittanto. The character is a young man searching for his identity. He was born to a mentally challenged woman who had taken refuge at Ranir Ghat on a stormy night. The truth about the impregnation of the unstable woman unfolds in flashbacks and reveals the dormant and repressed sexual urges of the otherwise decent village folk who had been living like an extended family. The protagonist had lost his mother in his infancy and has known all the village elders as his well wishers. They had collectively nurtured him as their own. But now as he starts questioning his own identity and is desperate to learn who his real father is, things that lay buried in the past are raked to people's discomfort and the upheaval shakes him from his roots. Things, however, come a full circle with the entire lot of villagers having to abandon their dwellings as the government declares it a necessity for the infrastructural upliftment! Faltu boasts of an excellent cinematography and a sensitive execution.
