Quotes

  • Naomi Hunter : Well, Dr. Emmerich... um... I... I know it's easy to forget sometimes, but I am a woman. You understand. Sorry. I... I know it's selfish of me, but I'd like to be alone for a while.

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Right.

    [chuckles softly]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I understand. I'll show you in.

    Naomi Hunter : Thank you.

    Sunny : [awoken up]  Huh?

[turns around and puts her head down as Otacon lets Naomi into the helicopter]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [Naomi almost falls over, but Otacon helps her]  Oh!

Naomi Hunter : [holding Otacon's hand]  Good night, Dr. Emmerich.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Yeah. If you get uncomfortable or anything, just let me know. I'll be out there working.

Naomi Hunter : [chuckles a bit]  Thank you.

    [lets go of Otacon's hand]

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : And...

    Naomi Hunter : Yes?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [attempts to kiss her again, but doesn't]  Call me Hal. Good night.

Naomi Hunter : Good night, Hal.

[Otacon closes the door then Naomi pulls him inside, presumably to make love to him]

  • Naomi Hunter : Snake... If you won't be a prisoner to fate... Then go. Fulfill your destiny.

  • Sunny : [during the Act 2 'Mission Briefing,' Sunny, once again, is cooking eggs on board the Nomad and begins to sing]  11... 23... 581321... 34... 55... 89... 144... 233... 377... 610987... 15... 97... 95... 84.

    [humming]

    Sunny : 34... 55... 89... 144.

[having finished the eggs, Sunny heads down and grunts as she's walking down the steps. She approaches Otacon and gives him the eggs]

Sunny : Um... Uncle Hal... Th-The eggs... They're done.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Thank you, Sunny.

Sunny : [gasps when Snake begins to wake up]  Snake!

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : So, back from the dead?

Solid Snake : [turns and looks at Sunny's burnt eggs]  I don't remember the sun being so flat.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [Sunny, feeling insulted, turns away]  Sorry. I'll dig in right away, Sunny.

    [Snake begins to cough]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : And would you make some for Snake, too?

    Sunny : Okay.

Solid Snake : Uh, hey... None for me, Sunny.

[Sunny walks back up the steps]

Solid Snake : How long was I out?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : The whole day.

Solid Snake : [grunts]  Someone saved my life.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Yeah. It could have been Meryl and her boys. Don't worry. They're doing fine.

Solid Snake : Liquid got away.

[gets up and coughs a bit more]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [holding Snake]  You okay?

Solid Snake : My body... just seized up all of a sudden. This isn't normal. It's not my joints or muscles.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : It looked like the PMC soldiers all went haywire en masse, too. I thought it might be a form of ADS, but I didn't detect any aberrations in the EM field. You were lucky. Some of those guys' hearts simply stopped.

Solid Snake : She was there. Naomi was at Liquid's side. Otacon, did you see her?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : No, but you're right. Naomi was there. I found traces of her DNA in that syringe you were holding.

    [hands Snake the syringe]

Solid Snake : So, it was Naomi. Why?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Here, let me show you something.

[sits down and types on his computer]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Right after it all happened, I got a video mail from Naomi. It was sent to my old address.

Sunny : [having made a second batch of burnt eggs, Sunny comes down and hands the dish to Snake]  U-Um... Here you go.

    [Snake takes the dish]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Thanks, Sunny. They're delicious.

Sunny : [picks up the dish she gave to Otacon before]  But... y-you haven't even eaten any.

    [Otacon takes back the dish]

Solid Snake : [puts down the dish]  Eh. We grownups have to watch our caloric intake, you know.

[picks up a cigarette that was on the dish]

Solid Snake : Eh, but thank you. I was lookin' for this.

Sunny : [stuttering]  Y-You're not watching your n-nicotine intake.

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Sunny!

[she walks back up the steps]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : You really hurt her feelings.

Solid Snake : Yeah? Why don't you teach her how to cook eggs, then?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Oh, like I know how to cook! Hey, check this out.

[types on his computer and the video mail from Naomi appears]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : The data's been quarantined, no viruses. The voiceprint matches Naomi's, and I'm fairly confident the video isn't digitally synthesized, either.

Naomi Hunter : [on the computer screen]  Snake, I'll make this quick. I'm in South America. I've been captured and forced to do research. It's Liquid. Liquid's goal is to seize control of SOP, the Sons of the Patriots system, that controls the soldiers. To do that, he needs to analyze the nanomachines' structure and find out how they communicate with one another. The nanomachines currently in use by militaries and PMCs are third generation, but their design is derived from that of the first generation. And the basic technology is still the same.

    Solid Snake : First generation?

Naomi Hunter : [on the computer screen]  I was the one who created the first generation. A nanomachine colony, part of which was FOXDIE. Nine years ago, at Shadow Moses... I injected it into your body, Snake. The technology used in FOXDIE was incorporated... inherited, really by SOP. That's why Liquid has me helping him hijack the system because I know how FOXDIE works.

[a sudden, loud breaking noise is heard]

Naomi Hunter : Please, you must rescue me. Liquid's found a loophole he can use to get in to the System.

    [more loud noises are heard]

Naomi Hunter : Preparations for his insurrection are nearly complete. There's no time to waste. Snake, hurry!

[another loud noise is heard and the video ends]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Naomi sent her location data in a separate file.

Solid Snake : [looking at Otacon's computer screen]  What the hell is that?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : It's a type of encrypted data. Sunny decoded it for us. Remember now?

[an image of a map appears]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : This is data from the Soliton Radar you used at Shadow Moses. I'm guessing Naomi wants us to know the message truly is from her. Sending the map data in Soliton Radar format... Pretty clever, and Mei Ling's helping us out from Hawaii.

Sunny : [from the steps]  The d-data she sent was 4-D sound data. I don't know how Soliton Radar works, but all I had to do was change the audio data into video data. It was easy. This Naomi lady seems pretty cool.

[walks back up and Otacon chuckles]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [hearing a beeping sound]  It's Campbell.

    [puts Campbell up on-screen]

Colonel Roy Campbell : Snake, as you'll recall, following the Shadow Moses incident nine years ago, Naomi was detained by the authorities. But, someone arranged for her escape.

Solid Snake : Yeah, I hear they added that to my rap sheet, too.

Colonel Roy Campbell : I suspect it was actually Liquid. He must have taken her prisoner himself and forced her to do research at his facility in South America. Chances are the location Naomi gave us is the site of Liquid's main base.

Solid Snake : But, there's no actual proof?

Colonel Roy Campbell : There's an ongoing skirmish between a new regime put into power by PMCs and a rebel army formed by remnants of the old one. The rebels have hired a small-scale local PMC of their own to stir things up. It's the quintessential example of a war economy market. The new regime is still in shambles, so it's really Pieuvre Armement, one of the PMCs under Outer Heaven control, that's calling the shots. You might say it's a perfect place for Liquid to make his haven.

  • Sunny : [during the 'Act 3 Mission Briefing,' Sunny once again is singing while cooking eggs on board the Nomad]  Argon... Boron... Silicon and neon... Ebrium... Fermium... Plutonium... Chlorine... Fluorine... Gallium and xenon... Thallium, strontium... Thorium...

    [starts humming]

Naomi Hunter : The trick is to keep the lid on.

[puts the lid on top of the pan]

Naomi Hunter : Now, let it cook for one minute. You like cooking, don't you? Good for you.

Sunny : This is my Sunny-side-up fortune telling. Um, when it turns out good, it means something good is gonna happen.

Naomi Hunter : Aha. So, that's why you don't cook them over easy.

[Sunny puts her spatula down and sets a time on her duck clock]

Naomi Hunter : But, the secret to good cooking is to keep who's going to eat it in mind.

    Sunny : Oh.

Naomi Hunter : [looks at a picture of Olga, Sunny's mother]  Oh... Is this your mother?

    Sunny : Yes.

Naomi Hunter : She's really beautiful.

    Sunny : [quietly]  Uh-huh.

Naomi Hunter : That tune you were humming... it's from the periodic table, isn't it?

    [clears her throat]

Naomi Hunter : Thorium, protactinium, uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium... Americium... Uh...

    Sunny : [and Naomi]  Curium.

    Naomi Hunter : Curium.

    Sunny : Curium.

Naomi Hunter : That's it. Curium!

[she and Sunny laugh, then Sunny stares at the blue flower in Naomi's pocket]

    Naomi Hunter : Oh, this?

    [takes out the flower]

    Naomi Hunter : May I?

[places it above Sunny's left ear]

    Naomi Hunter : There.

[turns and looks in a mirror]

Naomi Hunter : See, Sunny. Us girls have to look our best.

Sunny : Her name... was Olga.

    Naomi Hunter : Hmm?

    Sunny : My mother.

Naomi Hunter : Oh. I see.

[she and Sunny both gasp when the pan starts to sizzle]

Naomi Hunter : It's gonna burn.

[Sunny quickly takes the top off]

    Naomi Hunter : Hold on.

[holds Sunny's hand with the spatula and helps her lift the eggs out of the pan and onto a dish]

Naomi Hunter : And... there. Done!

    Sunny : Thanks.

Naomi Hunter : Of course. We did a great job.

[the timer on the duck clock goes off and both Sunny and Naomi laugh; Sunny is then heard typing on a computer and Naomi is typing on another]

Naomi Hunter : Dr. Emmerich, Liquid is in Eastern Europe. He's after the corpse of Big Boss.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [holding his laptop]  Huh? What for?

Naomi Hunter : It's the final key he needs to gain access to SOP. The keys to the System are Big Boss' genetic code and bio-metric data. Without them, there's no way to gain access.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Wait. What's Liquid been doing all this time?

Naomi Hunter : [brings up some pictures on-screen]  He's been performing tests. Two tests. The first, using the genetic code from Liquid's DNA chip. In his second attempt, he used the DNA code and bio-metric data extracted from Snake's blood.

Solid Snake : [from upstairs, smoking a cigarette]  What's the need for the original if a substitute works just as well?

Naomi Hunter : Neither your genetic pattern nor Liquid's genetic pattern is a one-hundred percent match for Big Boss'.

Solid Snake : [coughs]  What do you mean we don't match?

    [starts walking down the steps]

Naomi Hunter : Dr. Emmerich... scientifically speaking...

    [bringing up more pictures on-screen]

Naomi Hunter : ... there's the markers implanted during the cloning process, the mixing of mitochondrial DNA within the egg cell, the intentionally altered terminate...

    [Snakes coughs again]

Naomi Hunter : ... terminator genes. Scientifically speaking. Both you and Liquid are as similar to Big Boss as you could possibly be. But, you're still different.

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Different?

    Naomi Hunter : Yes.

Solid Snake : So, that's what Liquid was talking about?

Liquid Ocelot : [from the first mission]  We're not copies of our father, after all!

Naomi Hunter : Which is why they created Solidus.

Solid Snake : But, Solidus is dead.

Naomi Hunter : Listen carefully, Snake. This is the most important part. The AI that controls the System employs a highly aggressive, advanced IDS. It uses a special code to inspect all data and commands circulating within the network. Any data that fails to conform to that code is treated as a foreign object and expunged, like viruses killed by white blood cells. The authentication program this IDS uses is based on a genetic identification program... one I helped develop for FOXDIE. It's set up so that host commands only execute properly if the key matches perfectly. However... if the IDS suspects someone is trying to break into the System, it registers that genetic code on a blacklist. That code is then blocked, and can never again be used to access the System. So, if you're going to use a substitute, you need to find a new genetic access code with each new trial.

Solid Snake : So, when Liquid accessed the System in the Middle East and South America, it was only a test.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I can't believe this. Snake and Big Boss don't have the same genetic code?

Naomi Hunter : [holding Otacon's hand]  Strictly speaking, Snake and Liquid aren't the same, either. Which is why FOXDIE only affected Liquid at Shadow Moses... and spared you. Let's put it this way. If Liquid uses Big Boss' genetic code, the original, he'll have the System completely under his control.

Solid Snake : Hold on. I thought having his code wasn't enough. You need his bio-metric data at the same time, don't you?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : That's right! And Big Boss is already dead.

  • Naomi Hunter : [act 3 Mission Briefing continued]  No. He's alive.

Solid Snake : Big Boss is... alive?

Naomi Hunter : His body is. Or rather, his cells.

    Solid Snake : That's impossible!

Naomi Hunter : Big Boss survives as a biomort, a brain-dead shell sustained in a lab.

    [Snake sits down beside Raiden]

Naomi Hunter : Liquid has already left for Europe in search of Big Boss' body. Right from the start, he knew his experiment in South America wasn't going to work.

    Solid Snake : Europe, huh?

Vamp : [from the end of the second mission]  The test was a failure, even with his code.

Liquid Ocelot : [from the end of the second mission]  As I feared, it's not pure enough. We need all of him.

Vamp : [from the end of the second mission]  Our only remaining option is to secure the original.

Naomi Hunter : If Liquid obtains the body, he'll be primed to make his final move.

Solid Snake : Allowing him total control of the System.

Naomi Hunter : Exactly. Unless we can stop him first.

[Raiden, lying down, begins to breathe roughly and white-colored blood starts seeping out of his body]

Sunny : Uncle Hal, I found it!

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Huh? Ah. This is it.

Solid Snake : Where'd you hack this from?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : AT Security. The Patriots.

Naomi Hunter : I can't believe this sort of thing still goes on.

[Sunny snatches a cigarette from Snake's mouth]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : The war economy is heating up the R&D race.

[Snake takes the cigarette back from Sunny]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : It's not just the PMCs, either. Every corporation tethered to the military-industrial complex is losing its sense of morality. And it's us science-holics who are doing their dirty work for them, not even realizing it.

Sunny : Can we make Jack better?

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I don't know.

Naomi Hunter : Sunny. May I?

[Sunny gets up from her chair; Naomi sits down in it and types on the computer]

Naomi Hunter : It's no use. There's nothing we can do here.

Sunny : Hmm? What do you mean?

Naomi Hunter : Look at this.

[gets up from the chair and Sunny sits it in again]

Naomi Hunter : His artificial blood needs dialysis. We don't have the proper equipment.

    Sunny : Dialysis?

Naomi Hunter : Getting his wounds healed is important, too. But, at this rate, he's not gonna last that long.

Sunny : Dialysis... is that like what k-kidneys do?

Naomi Hunter : That's right. Raiden's blood is an older type of artificial blood that was used by the military called white blood. After it's been in use for a while, the blood needs to be dialyzed, filtered. Right now, he's slipping into auto-toxemia.

[Sunny gasps and starts typing on the computer]

Raiden : [breathing roughly]  It's there... In Europe.

Naomi Hunter : What do you mean?

Raiden : Eastern Europe. They have equipment that can heal me there.

Solid Snake : Where? The same place Liquid went?

    Raiden : Dr. Madnar.

    [Naomi helps raise him up]

Raiden : He saved my life.

    [falls back down, unconscious]

Naomi Hunter : Dr. Madnar. I've heard of him.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : A world-renowned cybernetics expert. Strictly underground, though.

Naomi Hunter : We're in luck, then. It's settled. We must head for Europe. The sooner we get there, the better.

    [grabs Otacon's hand]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I'll call Campbell and have him get us landing clearance. Oh. Snake, where're you going?

Solid Snake : Well, I'm gonna be spewing out poison soon enough anyway. What's one more smoke gonna hurt?

    Sunny : Uh-uh!

    [takes the cigarette]

    Sunny : This is a no-smoking flight!

  • Naomi Hunter : [act 3 Mission Briefing continued; Sunny and Snake are resting as Naomi watches Otacon typing on his computer. She fiddles with what looks like a mini flash drive from her necklace and walks over to Otacon]  Who is this?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Oh, her? That's my sister.

Naomi Hunter : Really? I never knew you had a sister. For a moment, I thought she might have been your girlfriend.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : No! I-I don't have a... Emma was a brilliant programmer. She wrote the worm that destroyed the Arsenal Gear AI. Then... Vamp killed her.

Naomi Hunter : I'm so sorry.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : No! There's nothing for you to be sorry for, or me. I used to be an anime otaku.

Naomi Hunter : Oh. So, that's where 'Otacon' comes from.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I was always fascinated by sci-fi anime. That's what got me into this line of work. It's too bad reality wasn't so simple. I never even imagined that science, that my own research, could cause so much misery.

    [gets up from his chair]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : I mean, it's not like us science-holics are Satanists or anything, but, even when we've got the best of intentions, we end up being used by others for evil.

Naomi Hunter : Dr. Emmerich, I...

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Uh...

    [sits back down]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : You see this?

    [referring to the Mk. II]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Sunny helped me build it.

Naomi Hunter : Really? Sunny helped build this?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : We built it using top-secret docs and patents dug up from intranets at a bunch of research labs. To tell you the truth, I think she's better at it than I am.

Naomi Hunter : But, she's just a child.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : She cracked the protection on your mail.

Naomi Hunter : W-Wow. I, uh, assumed it was you.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : [gets back up]  Sunny was taken by the Patriots right after she was born. She never even met her parents. She's spent her entire childhood inside the Net.

Naomi Hunter : That's why she has trouble speaking.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Her home is in the computer. She can only see the outside from the inside. She's always in there, searching for herself, searching for her family. She's trying to find out who she is and where she's going.

Naomi Hunter : Searching for herself and her family.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : She believes she can find the answers inside a machine hooked up to the world. She spends every day inside the Net, exploring. For Sunny, this is home.

Naomi Hunter : No. It shouldn't be like that.

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : What?

Naomi Hunter : It's time you let her go outside.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : What are you talking about?

Naomi Hunter : She hasn't even been born yet.

    [Snake overhears their conversation]

Naomi Hunter : She's still in the womb. She needs to live a real life.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : But, Sunny's never shown any interest in leaving the Nomad. Frankly, I'm worried about letting her go out there.

Naomi Hunter : [holding the mini flash drive]  I have a feeling she'll do just fine.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : You... really think she'll be okay going outside?

Naomi Hunter : That's not what I meant. I think she's got a good handle on her science.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Ah. Uh, sorry. Go on.

    Naomi Hunter : Huh?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : You were about to say something.

Naomi Hunter : Oh... Right. Um, would you mind if I help Sunny with her cooking?

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : O-Of course not. Go ahead. But... about all we've got on board besides military rations are eggs.

Naomi Hunter : [Otacon's about to put his glasses on, but Naomi stops him]  No. Leave them off. It makes you look handsome.

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Y-You think so?

[he and Naomi are about to kiss when a beeping noise interrupts them]

Naomi Hunter : [puts the mini flash drive back into the necklace]  Uh, Dr. Emmerich?

    Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : Huh?

Naomi Hunter : Is it okay to sleep in there?

    [pointing to the helicopter]

Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich : E-Excuse me?
