So, we’re a few days on from the debut of Nxt on the USA Network. A new era for the gold-and-yellow brand of WWE. The show has gone from one-hour to two-hours each week and will, in a couple of weeks time, be a full two-hour live show on USA. The debut episode, which saw the first hour on USA and the second hour on the WWE Network, was a hyped and anticipated program. All wrestling-fan eyes were on it. So, how was it, and was it a strong intro to the brand for those who may not have seen it before?
The show kicked off with a four-way women’s match that saw Io Shirai, Mia Yim, Bianca Belair and Candice Larae compete in a very exciting ten-minute battle to determine the number-one contender for the Nxt Women’s Championship. Larae picked up the win. It was a...

Showing rather than explaining the greatness of Beto O’Rourke as a retail politician who is both engaging and engaged, Running with Beto might not shine too much new light on the unlikely U.S. Senate candidate from El Paso, Texas if you were paying attention to his 2018 midterm campaign. Beto was an underdog with demographics not quite on his side (yet) who made a go of it by actually campaigning, traveling to all 254 Texas counties in an effort to meet as many eligible voters as he could. He did it the ol’ fashion way, standing his ground even if his stances on universal background checks and the border didn’t play to conservatives.
Running with Beto comes close to but side-steps the cult of personality surrounding the energetic candidate. It’s a minor look at strategy in an era where strategy is actually broadcast as part of the process, usually on Facebook Live,...

Marshall Curry‘s Oscar-nominated documentary short “A Night at the Garden” started with a casual dinner conversation with a friend, who happened to be writing a screenplay set in 1939. “He said, ‘Did you know that there was a rally in Madison Square Garden where 20,000 Americans gathered to celebrate Nazism?'” Curry recalls. Incredulous, he went home and did some research to find out whether or not his pal was mistaken. “Sure enough, he was actually right.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Curry above.

As Curry delved deeper, he discovered various short clips of the event, some of which had been previously featured in historical documentaries. He hired a researcher to find more footage, and decided to piece it together into a seven-minute film.

Marshall Curry’s Oscar-nominated short film “A Night at the Garden” brings viewers inside a 1939 Nazi rally held in New York City, and now distributor Field of Vision is set to disrupt Fox News with footage of the rally. Field of Vision will debut a television spot for “A Night at the Garden” during the Monday, February 11 airing of “Hannity.”
“A Night at the Garden” assembles archival footage to show viewers what a Nazi rally in America really looked like in 1939. The event depicted took place at Madison Square Garden and was attended by 22,000 Americans. The short runs seven minutes and features a speech from Fritz Julius Kuhn, the leader of the pro-Nazi organization German American Bund. The rally’s 80th anniversary occurs February 20.
“I hope that by showing the ‘Hannity’ audience how manipulative leaders in the past have attacked the press, scapegoated minorities, made light of violence against protesters,...

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker’s announcement of his 2020 presidential run marked only the latest chapter in a career of ambitious campaigns, the most famous of which was captured in Marshall Curry’s 2005 Oscar-nominated documentary “Street Fight.” The intimate portrait followed Booker through a dramatic 2002 Newark mayoral race against long-time incumbent Sharpe James, who ultimately prevailed. Booker finally won in 2006, scored reelection in 2010, and became a senator in 2013.
Now, Curry’s gearing up for a sequel.

Marshall Curry has been nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar twice, once for “Street Fight” in 2006 and again for “If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front” in 2012, and his work has brought viewers into worlds both uncomfortable and intense. His Tribeca-winning documentary “Point and Shoot,” for instance, followed the first person account of the Libyan revolution against dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

The documentarian has again combined the political with the horrific for his new short documentary “A Night at the Garden,” which has officially made its debut on Field of Vision. The seven-minute film pieces together archival footage from 1939 to create a first-hand look at a Nazi rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden which attracted 22,000 Americans. The rally is rarely mentioned in the history books, making Marshall’s account a true dark and chilling revelation.

What drives a man to surf down an avalanche of 100 feet of water? It’s a question Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director/producer Rory Kennedy explores in her portrait of legendary surfer Laird Hamilton, which will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
“Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton” includes incredible cinematography of Hamilton’s death-defying surfing, but the film is also an intimate look at the life of the man who became the legend. It’s a film that forced Kennedy into a wide array of shooting circumstances, requiring different techniques and equipment to capture the surfer’s story.
Kennedy is at Sundance for the film’s premiere and will be stopping by the Canon Creative Studio on Main Street in Park City to talk with IndieWire about shooting her latest film, which you can watch on Facebook Live.

The Oscars can have its annual celebrity luncheon. This week, several documentarians celebrated the Cinema Eye Honors with an after-hours field trip to the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Conceived in 2008 as a bid to broaden awareness for documentary achievements, the Cinema Eyes highlight a dozen categories that range from best director to best cinematography to graphic design. However, while it began as a tonic to the five-nominee limitations that circumscribe the Oscars, the Cinema Eyes have evolved into an idiosyncratic celebration all its own. Although the awards are Wednesday night at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York, the ceremony is now only the culmination of a full week of programming that includes three days of activities.
“It’s kind of like senior skip week,” said co-founder and filmmaker Aj Schnack, catching his breath on Monday night before delivering a speech to the filmmakers in attendance. “Yes,...

Let’s talk about race in this year’s Oscar race, shall we? Three of the top films up for best documentary feature this year — 13th (Netflix), I Am Not Your Negro (Magnolia), and O.J.: Made in America (Espn) — all deal with the black experience in the United States through various lenses. These movies, all favorites to make the official list of five nominees that will battle it out for the big win, drive home the fact that this is still a very important and is one of the Academy’s favorite topics to highlight — but has that always been the case?
First, let’s take a more in-depth look at what these three leading docs deal center around. Ava DuVernay’s 13th provides an in-depth look at the prison system and how the nation’s history of racial...

The idea behind the Local Voices ad campaign is to capture the concerns that everyday Americans have about presidential hopeful Donald Trump in unscripted, personal commentaries that later air as one-minute ads in the same swing state communities where they were filmed. The key is to find voices who belong to community leaders who aren’t normal Hillary Clinton supporters, may they be conservatives or generally apolitical figures.

In swing states where the voters have been confronted with constant barrage of political ads, the other key ingredient is authenticity, so they are not dismissed as just another manufactured political message.
To accomplish this, founder Lee Hirsch (“Bully”) turned to fellow documentary filmmakers and recruited some of the top filmmakers working in nonfiction, including Amir Bar-Lev (“Happy Valley, “The Tillman Story”), Amy Berg (“West of Memphis”), Marshall Curry (“Street Fight,...

Helicone Kinetic Sculpture
Come to think of it, there hasn’t been much recent innovation in the realm of executive’s desk toys, at least not since the 1980s. There’s the stress ball, Newton’s cradle, the Magic 8 Ball, the desk zen garden. Now, Stanford design professor John Edmark has created a hypnotic sculpture that owners will find impossible to stop fussing. Employing 38 pieces of laser-cut wood, the Helicone Kinetic Sculpture transforms from a pinecone to a helix—in the most mesmerizing way possible—with a twist of the wrist. Really, it’s best articulated visually. [Kevin Pang]

No movie gives me hope for the future right now. What a question! Is that what movies are supposed to do?
But this is the most important piece of film criticism I’ve read this year, and the writing gives me some kind of hope for intellectual direction in what may be revolutionary times.

Another year, another WrestleMania, and once again the WWE have put together their undeniably impressive Showcase of the Immortals, this year in Dallas, Texas.
Kicking off, as it did last year, with a seven man ladder match for the Intercontinental Title, Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Sami Zayn, Stardust, Sin Cara and Zack Ryder put on a great match, delivering plenty of bumps and really setting the seeds for the ongoing Owens / Zayn feud now that both men are established on the main roster.
Next up was Aj Styles’s Mania debut against Chris Jericho, with both men giving their all but not quite creating the synergy that might be expected from two top performers. That said, Styles was impressive and will surely be a lot higher up the bill for Wm Xxxiii next year.

Paul Heyman is officially Brock Lesnar’s advocate, but he’s also the WWE Superstar’s best friend, social media connection and book co-author. It isn’t tricky for the pro wrestling promoter to puff up his boy Brock on TV — Heyman believes everything he says on the mic.

When the stadium has emptied and after venue staff have cleaned up plastic cups and garbage aplenty, literally millions of people will go to bed thinking about WWE’s WrestleMania. The annual pay-per-view draws in more affection for pro wrestling than any other event, it’s the one show each year that has such an incredible atmosphere surrounding it.
Credit where credit is due, WWE have managed to foster incredible excitement for ‘Mania. Yet, it will all wash away should people go away from the event feeling it was lacking even slightly. WrestleMania simply must be a proverbial home run for the company, the rest of the year perhaps depends on it. That’s something the promotion must be wary of, because they have booked themselves into a corner slightly with the show.
It’s expected that Roman Reigns will once again headline ‘Mania, this time opposite Triple H.

Extreme violence is not common in today’s World Wrestling Entertainment, mainly because certain nuances which constitute a brutal match have been outlawed by those calling the shots. Since going PG in June/July, 2008, things like unprotected chair shots and blood have rarely been seen on WWE television. This hasn’t exactly helped matches like Hell In A Cell or Street Fight-style bouts come across as edgy, but it’s perhaps understandable that the company would like to protect performers.
There’s a common misconception that matches are only ‘hardcore’, ‘extreme’ or even brutal if they’re accompanied by the sight of blood. In truth, seeing claret spill from the foreheads of pro wrestlers does add an element of excitement, but it’s not the only aspect of a match that makes those watching wince from the other side of the TV screen.

Emerging from the Monday Night Raw entrance stage instead of through the live crowd, Roman Reigns surveyed the scene before making his way to the ring. Inside the squared circle, Triple H was fresh from a match against Dolph Ziggler, but looked ready to fight his chief rival.
Initially, fan response seemed largely favourable. There were screams of delight upon seeing Reigns, mainly from females, but all that would change once the top contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Title made his way into the ring. Upending ‘The Game’, Reigns began landing blow after blow to the champion. As if by magic, any cheering disappeared, replaced by noticeable booing from the crowd.
This is a major problem, and it’s one many have foreseen over the past number of months. WWE’s core fan base just doesn’t see Roman Reigns as the top babyface in the company,...

Despite some reservations heading into the pay-per-view, WrestleMania 31 actually turned out be a very enjoyable event.
There were grumbles after the show had finished, mainly with the fact that Triple H managed to defeat Sting, along with John Cena’s WWE United States Title victory over the emerging Rusev.
This year, the big marquee matches are pretty damn varied.
First and foremost, Roman Reigns goes into his second consecutive WrestleMania main event, this time against Triple H. After losing out on the WWE World Heavyweight Title last year, it looks like 32 may just be Roman’s lucky number this time around.
In other bumper collisions, Shane McMahon will face The Undertaker in a Hell In A Cell encounter. The fate of Monday Night Raw hangs in the balance, which may just lead to the return of a long-discarded system that’s perhaps ready for a return.

The Road to WrestleMania ran through Hershey, Pennsylvania Sunday night as the Superstars and Divas of World Wrestling Entertainment performed at an non-televised live event.
In a co-main event, Aj Styles challenged Kevin Owens for the WWE Intercontinental Championship while Kane and Big Show battled The Wyatt Family’s Erick Rowan and Braun Strowman in a Tornado Rules Hershey Street Fight. Yours truly was in attendance to witness those two bouts, as well as the rest of the action WWE unleashed on the Sweetest Place on Earth.
A show so close to WrestleMania, I could not wait to see what the reaction would be for some of the company’s biggest stars and the stories they would tell.
Needless to say, I was surprised by what I encountered.
What were the fans in attendance like? How were the performances of the men and women after a long weekend of work and travel?...

What was largely expected following WWE Fastlane was officially announced during Monday Night Raw, as Dean Ambrose will take on Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 32 in Dallas. WhatCulture previously noted this was the likely scenario moving forward.
Early in the day Monday, WWE cameras (disguised as “fan footage”) shot a scene in the parking lot prior to Raw. Dean Ambrose was shown arriving at the arena, but as we left his car, he was savagely attacked by Lesnar. Lesnar delivered several knee strikes to Ambrose before throwing him a couple of times on the hood and windshield of a limousine. The footage was posted on social media and shown during Raw several times.
During Raw, an in-ring promo segment with Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman was interrupted when Ambrose entered the arena driving an ambulance. He crawled out of the vehicle and slowly made his way to the ring,...

Two different promotions, Ring of Honor and Tna, tried their absolute best to push the envelope in their main events this week. Those two respective matches were featured more than any other on this week’s list, and for very good reason. One was a Philly Street Fight, the other was a Last Man Standing Match. Both were full of tables, ladders, and even Superkicks to the heads of the announcers.
In their three-team tag match, The Young Bucks utilized grocery store paraphernalia on their path to victory while Matt Hardy, challenging for the Tna Championship, brutalized his foe until he bled from his mouth. Not all of this will be for the faint of heart.
Since Superkicking announcers was already mentioned, that’s where the countdown of the most insane spots begins this week…...

Over the years, there have been literally hundreds of excellent pro wrestling matches. Many of these bouts have taken place in independent promotions across the world, never to be seen by millions who dearly love the industry. Even though there’s a reason for this – the fact these companies have a small catchment – it’s also startling to think it’s not exclusive to the independent circuit.
There are Tna, WCW and even WWE matches that many people haven’t seen. Then, there are those collisions that have been witnessed, but many fans will never revisit again. Perhaps these matches took place on duff Pay-Per-Views, or other bouts came along between the same participants that were simply superior. Whatever the reason, the following 12 matches remain unlikely to be watched again by anyone other than the most hardcore of fans.

Hell in a Cell is WWE’s ultimate feud-ender, and one of its most punishing match types. It’s also been the site of some truly iconic moments, including Kane’s debut, Mankind’s legendary plummet, and the ‘End of an Era’ match at WrestleMania 28. Unfortunately, nothing in life is perfect – not even the Hell in a Cell stipulation.
There have been 30 Hell in a Cell matches throughout WWE history (if you include a multi-man post-Raw dark match in 2011), and a fair few have been utterly terrible.
The stipulation’s worst moments don’t just revolve around shoddy in-ring action; the Cell match has also featured its fair share of terrible booking decisions and ill-advised finishes.

Everybody knows that wrestling retirements seem to last as long as the average Hardcore Title reign.

PewDiePie and his gaming friends aren’t the only YouTube content creators lending their likenesses to a new video game. MobileX Labs has released Celebrity Street Fight, which pits top social media stars against one another in one-on-one combat.
Celebrity Street Fight wears its influences on its sleeve for all to see. Its visual style is reminiscent of the old MTV show Celebrity Deathmatch, while its gameplay carries the look and feel of old-school 2D fighting games. The app itself is free, but it features microtransactions that can unlock additional moves and powerups.
The main difference between the new game and Celebrity Deathmatch is Street Fight’s choice of celebrity. More than a dozen YouTube and Vine stars appear in the game, including Ali-a, DeStorm, Ksi, and TheDiamondMinecraft. Upon the game’s release, its stars hyped it up by showing it off on their respective channels. Here’s Dan from...

There was a scary fan incident at a WWE live event in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on Saturday night when a fan threw a replica Money in the Bank briefcase at the back of the head of Roman Reigns.
The incident happened as Reigns was getting ready to work a main event match against Bray Wyatt.
According to PWInsider, the authorities were called following the incident. Reigns was stunned by the blow because he had his back turned to the fan and he was hit in the back of the head by the briefcase. Reigns was stunned by the blow, so he sat in the corner of the ring for about two minutes before he felt like he was okay to do the match.

Here are the results from Slammiversary;
X-Division Title: Tigre Uno d. Manik & DJ Zema. Tigre Uno used a corkscew senton for the win.
Robbie E d. Jessie Godderz. They were a former heel tag team, Robbie turned face and got the win a reverse Ddt.
Street Fight: Bram d. Matt Morgan. Prior to the match, Morgan challenged Bram to a Street Fight. There was a point in the match where Bram tried to find an object, but didn’t seem to find anything. After getting some chairs in the ring, Bram was able to hit a Ddt on a chair for the win.

WrestleMania 31, the WWE’s biggest event of the year is over and we arrive at Extreme Rules, the pay per view that WWE claim is their time once a year to “go extreme”. The PG era has meant that “extreme” in the current WWE climate is very different to what it meant back in Ecw or during WWE’s TV-14 run, but there’s still some interesting stuff booked for this PPV, so let’s see how it all plays out.
On paper this is a mixture of rematches and feuds we’ve seen before, but that doesn’t mean that the matches are going to be bad. Walking into the La Convention Center this morning I was greeted by what I can only describe as organised chaos, with the spectacle of hundreds of industry members walking around with an air of nervousness and excitement about them. It was as though they were all there for their very first interview in the games industry, with butterflies in the stomach and that questions of how is it going to be, am I going to get what I expect, am I going to be caught out unprepared, or am I going to sail through and wonder why I was ever nervous?
Well it wouldn’t be long before we would all find out as while the security staff and organisers held the cordon, that time was fast approaching when the word would come that E3 2015 was officially open and the hundreds of industry attendees would rush...

Read More: 12 Must-See Films at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival In the public's eye, the Tribeca Film Festival is synonymous with Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese and celebrity-strewn red carpets. But for the indie film industry, there's something far sexier to see in New York City starting this week: New documentaries. Over the last 14 years, Tribeca has soared to become one of the top nonfiction film markets in the United States. Ever since claiming the premieres of eventual Oscar nominees, such as Marshall Curry's "Street Fight" (2005) and Alex Gibney's "Taxi to the Dark Side" (2007), and box-office winners, such as Lee Hirsch's "Bully" (2011) and David Gelb's "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" (2012), the festival has become a significant destination for documentary filmmakers. Now, the blossoming nonfiction industry has sprouted up to support them. Embracing their position as a premiere documentary platform, the festival has given its opening night...

After narrowing the Oscar documentary feature shortlist to five at the 87th Academy Award nominations Jan. 15, a number of notable exclusions were featured, particularly Al Hicks‘ Keep on Keepin’ On, which documents the mentorship and friendship of a jazz legend and a blind piano prodigy, and Steve James‘ Life Itself, about the life and career of famed film critic Roger Ebert. Some films surprised when they didn’t even land a spot on the shortlist, such as Red Army, which examines the rise and fall of the Soviet Union’s hockey team from the perspective of its coach. That film holds a 100 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 2002 Royal Rumble took place at a time when WWE had a really big roster due to all of the talent they acquired when they bought WWE in 2001. While they didn’t choose to bring in all of their talent and a number of big names came in down the road, there were still several WCW stars that were playing major roles in WWE.
With the Invasion storyline finished after settling things at Survivor Series 2001, WWE had to move forward with a new direction. That led to the WWE return of Ric Flair, who left the company for WCW eight years old. He was put in the role of an owner that was battling with Vince McMahon. It got so heated that they ended up having a match at this show.

The 2000 Royal Rumble was a big event because the biggest draw in the company, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, was on the shelf with neck surgery. Austin was out from November 1999 to October 2000, so other people had to step up. Thankfully for WWE, they had guys like The Rock and Triple H waiting in the wings. In many ways, the 2000 Rumble was their coming out party.
This is the first Royal Rumble that took place in the “World’s Most Famous Arena” Madison Square Garden in New York City. That’s actually surprising just because WWE held so many events in Msg including some of their other PPVs, so it took them 13 Rumble events before they went to their favorite arena.

Just in time for Halloween, Daniel Radcliffe gets some special powers and couple of appendages growing from his temples in Radius’ Horns, which will be this week’s biggest rollout among specialty newcomers. The title received a warm welcome at a Cinema Society event attended by its stars this week in New York. This week’s newbies are dominated by nonfiction fare, though with some exceptions. Kino Lorber is opening French/Swiss maestro Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye To Language following a successful festival run. It has been critically acclaimed, and the company is expecting it to be a box office winner too. The 2014 Best Documentary winners from South by Southwest and Tribeca are going head-to-head in their theatrical debuts. Radius’ The Great Invisible (SXSW) opened in limited release Wednesday in an exclusively theatrical rollout, and The Orchard is bowing Point And Shoot (Tribeca) in a single NYC run. Submarine Deluxe...

"Everybody tries to create their idealized image of how they want to be seen and who they want to be..." Today's trailer is for a riveting documentary about humanity called Point and Shoot, the latest work from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Marshall Curry (of Street Fight), telling the fascinating story of a young American who ends up fighting in the Libyan revolution while on a motorcycle adventure through Northern Africa and the Middle East. Described as a "wild and dangerous coming-of-age tale", this doc looks like it's so much more than just a story about one lone fighter, and I'm intrigued to delve into this and learn more about his story. This is a beautiful trailer that should make you interested in catching this doc soon. Watch the official trailer for Marshall Curry's documentary Point and Shoot, in high def from Apple: Point and Shoot, a documentary film by two-time...

The 2002 WWE SummerSlam PPV was held on August 25, 2002 in Uniondale, New York. The event took place at a time when WWE was going through a transitional phase.
They had just changed the company name from World Wrestling Federation to World Wrestling Entertainment and the roster was split in two with half the roster on Raw while the others were on Smackdown. The top draw Steve Austin walked out on the company, the second top draw The Rock was set to focus on his growing movie career and a number of young guys were being called up to the main roster.
One of those younger talents was Brock Lesnar, who debuted the night after WrestleMania and was main eventing this show after less than five months on the main roster. Other young talents that were called up to the main roster in 2002 were John Cena, Randy Orton and Batista...
